New Rites of War

So the 40k Open Day revealed to us that there would be a number of new Rites of War available in Book VI: Retaliation. Exciting stuff! The word is:

- 10 new Rites of War available to everyone (giving us 15 all up),

- 1 new Rite of War for each currently released Legion, plus 2 for each of the 3 in Retaliation (2 for each Legion),

- 1 new Rite of War for Blackshields.

- Rites of War are generally going to reflect the changing strategies as many of the Legions adapt to Astartes-on-Astartes combat.

I really think they will have the biggest effect on the Heresy meta to date, giving every Legion new ways to field armies. A couple of examples were mentioned, i.e. the new Emperor's Children one would see Kakophoni as Troops, plus gaining Relentless. Also, Word Bearers gaining Gal Vorbak as Troops in their Rite.

The generic ones give lots of amazing opportunities - the Eye of Horus Podcast said a "Unification Wars Veterans" Rite would be awesome, with lots of rad/Volkite weapons and additional Veteran Tactics. Or one where a Dreadnought has to be the Warlord, like Cassian Dracos.

What do people think would be great new Rites?

I want a Death Guard Rite of War centered around Destroyers and perhaps Grave Wardens. Make Destroyers Troops at a discounted price or something, remove the restrictions on the Moritat or allow to make a Moritat-esque Praetor, but limit it to where you cannot take Transports or Fast Attack or something. Perhaps Rad weapons affect allies, I don't know.

I'm hoping there's a Destroyer-based RoW that's not limited to the Death Guard. And I'm saying that as a Death Guard player... so that the other Death Guard exclusive RoW we'll get means we have access to two new characterful RoWs instead of just the one :P

But really, it would make sense. Then people could run forces based around Destroyers like the Ultramarines Nemesis chapter or the Word Bearers Star of Judgement.

Death Guard ONLY. If you want Destroyers, you join our team.

I'm sorry? Whats That? I can't hear you over the Destroyer Emblems Present on my Imperial Fists Transfer Sheet.

Crap... I know, that's why I can't wait for the new Death Guard decals. Can't understand why the original never came with them...

The problem with Night Lords is their whole schtick is psychological warfare. That's extremely difficult to portray on the tabletop, especially against an enemy that isn't really affected by Fear (doesn't hurt the rule is garbage either).

Yeah I get that, and honestly Terror Squads are good infantry, I just don't don't want to HAVE to take 3 of the damn things.

I think a generic Destroyer RoW will add more than a Death Guard Only one - the Reaping already adds optional rad grenades to every character! :)

As for the transfers, Death Guard will get updated ones. The latest ones have had so much stuff on them!

I think those restrictions (or caveats) are a bit ridiculous, I agree. Just like some limit you to one HQ or require you to take more than one. I personally like the idea of Terror Squads and would love to one day do a small force of them, but they are very cost prohibitive.

Yeah, it's been confirmed. There were pics of it at Open Day, looked pretty nice.

I love Terror Squads. Infiltrating Marines, all with Volkite Chargers? What's not to love?

I can't wait to see the new Rites of War. Maybe there will be something providing additional flexibility in transport choices. Looking forward to seeing the new Ultra one as the existing one is garbage

At least Terror Assault is quite a strong option regardless of its restrictions :) Not as big a deal for higher point games either. But yeah, for people running 1850-2250... I understand it's a problem

Anyway, we do know one thing about the new RoWs, or at least the Legion-specific ones. They are not pre-Primarch or Great Crusade, and all reflect the changing strategies as many of the Legions adapt to Astartes-on-Astartes combat.

So the Death Guard one will probably reflect the Poison Ships like the Mia Donna Mori heading out and and unleashing their forbidden arsenals. Probably Grave Warden troops with a small buff to them, like they can Overwatch or something, and maybe a chem-bombardment you can call in or something like that.

I think it's also been stated that the new Sons of Horus RoW gives them all master-crafted or something on turn 1 to reflect Horus bringing in all the best supplies for his own Legion... Which sounds real nasty. I wonder what the restrictions are?

Yeah, this is pretty relevant - will add it to the 1st post.

...a Row Giving Templar Ap2 Weapons (As much as I can hope I really hope this doesnt happen. They're deadly enough tongue.png)?...one that liberates the Phalanx Warders from their ZM Uber-Niche?

It'll be interesting to see what the RG get. Going to be hard to beat the utter smachdown Decapitation Strike & Maun deliver.

Since they'll reflect the changing progress of the legions as the war progresses, I imagine the new VIII legion one will look somthing like this:

New Night Lord RoW: The Waiting

• A detachment using this rite of war may only select units with the (infantry) type

• All models in this detachment may not make any attack, movement, shooting, or assault moves. Instead they must simply sit on their bums and rot in depths of the nearest 1st Legion ship.

• A detachment using this rite of war may never select Konrad Curze as a Lord of War. He's to busy being batman on Ultramar.
