Revised Project: Traitor Militia & Cults Army

Why in memoriam? This past Monday, my dad passed away. He's been dealing with cancer for the past couple of years, and I think he finally had enough. It's sad because he's gone, but to know his suffering is over is of some relief. Anyway, my dad is the reason I have such a love for military history, the technology of warfare, etc. It may be a sort of odd way of grieving, but I want to build and paint this army in his memory. I want to take my time and do a good job cleaning, assembling, and painting every piece. It may take me a long time to finish, but I'm in no rush.

This is going to be the project log I keep for my brand-spanking new army plan, the Solar Auxilia 888th Cthonian Head-hunters. It's a rather on-the-nose designation for a Solar Auxilia cohort in the service of the Warmaster, with obvious predelictions toward a particular god of the pantheon who enjoys things like spilled blood and flayed skulls. I think he might also approve of huge tanks crushing weaklings beneath their treads, and hundreds of soldiers rushing toward their inevitable deaths.

I don't plan on using Khornate or daemonic bits from 40k. The 888th's dedication to Khorne is something embodied more in their actions and tactics than their appearance, and hinted at with the blood god's sacred number coincidentally rolleyes.gif being their designation.

I plan to write some fluff in the future, but I need a little time to figure it all out. I don't think I really know enough about the setting yet to do it justice.

Soon I'll place a big order for my army, but right now I'm starting with the centerpiece: the Baneblade variants.

I've only just begun and I know this isn't an exciting picture, but it's the first step toward a fully magnetized situation that allows me to swap between the variants so I can try them all without proxying.

Two things:

1. My condolences for your loss. Losing anyone is difficult, even more so a family member, but I can't imagine how hard it must be to have a parent pass on. I wish you and your family the best as you go through this period.

2. Venomlust is doing Heresy! Not only that, but Solar Auxilia! Starting with a Baneblade! FKhfsghH... <head explodes from the awesomeness.>

Ahem... Looking good so far, mate. Gotta admit, at first I thought this was that other thread, but then I saw your name. You have a tremendous amount of skill, and I am certain you'll do your dad proud.

My apologies if any of this came across in poor taste. I'm doing my best to put down the many, many, trains of thought going through my head right now.

My thoughts go out to you and your family. Like Psycho said, losing anyone is difficult, but a parent is possibly the worst.

But with that said, dedicating an army, especially one like this one promises to be, is a great act of rememberance. I will be watching this intently.

My condolences Venom, my father too passed away recently (last friday, to be exact). He'd be honoured to have an army painted in his memory, I'm sure!

I offer condolences of my own then, Hesh Kadesh. It's a rough time, but having something to occupy one's hands and mind is a good thing!

My sincere condolences Venom, I've been dealing with my own father's health issues recently and due to distance it's hard to get him to tell me what's going on at times.  I think this is a fantastic idea and I will be checking this thread to see how things are going.  Should you run into any issues or have questions about the Solar Auxilia models, please let me know as I've been building them for a bit now and they tend to have some odd/fragile parts that you wouldn't expect.

Thanks very much! I have no idea what to expect other than the lasrifle sections, which appear to only be a few pieces. Hopefully veletarii are similar.

The Veletaris can be a bit tricky if Forge World goofs and doesn't given you the proper arm pieces for them, I had two of sprue #7 instead of #6 and #7, but as I do not have any lasrifles in my cohort I can't speak for the complexity in relation to them.  They are basically one of two variants with the arm either holding a horizontal bracing grip or an arm without the hand that just fits into the wrist joint of the hand holding the gun.

The biggest thing I can warn you about with the Veletaris is the raised line around their visors.  It is extraordinarily thin and you may find it's already loose and wobbling when you first get them.  You can easily knock them loose when scrubbing them after soaking to clean off the mold release so use a very soft tooth brush and gently scrub the visor area in the direction it goes, instead of up and down, once you're done don't get distracted and wander back up there with the tooth brush and you should be fine.

Hope that helps; looking forward to seeing your guys posted!

Thanks for the heads up regarding the infantry.

I'm putting in my big Auxilia order at the end of this month. A buddy and I are gonna combine our orders.

Still working on the baneblade right now. There are a million components, and they all appear to have obvious mould lines! I find myself compelled to clean them all, even in areas where you couldn't possibly see them.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I think what your doing is awesome

Thank you very much. I suppose out of any group of people, it will be fellow wargamers who appreciate the emotion and such that can go into crafting an army.

My condolences for losing your father. That must be terrible.

What's the color scheme? Good luck!

At the moment, something involving Black/Red/Gray with metallic elements.

HH Book 4 gives us the following imagery for Cthonian Head-hunters Cohorts:

So I think that combination can be used in interesting ways. The axe on the tank is iconography of an armoured corps, so that will be a cool graphic to recreate. Maybe I should buy the Sons of Horus transfer sheet to make my life a little easier.

My current plan is to order the following as the core/beginning of the army:

Coteaz Torquemada (To be converted into my Lord Marshal. Remove all the Inquisition iconography, of course. Maybe replace his head, as well. As a falconer, I've always loved this model and there's finally a reason to get it and use it.)

Auxilia Lasrifle Section x2

Aegis Defense Line x2 (Ordered one from eBay so far, so 1 to go. The one I have already is covered with Nurgle plague growths so it won't work.)

Veletaris Storm Section x2

Dracosan Armored Transport x2

Auxilia Medusa x3

Auxilia Quad Mortar x3

Malcador Infernus x1

And of course the Baneblade, which is the only thing in my possession at the moment.

The Solar Auxilia should get a cool transfer sheet from FW in the future - and afaik with Headhunter icons and the banner on them ^^

Every time I read your posts it makes me so happy ^^

Also sorry for your loss Venom. Do him proud and make a kickass cohort of crazy auxilia!!

This is gonna look amazing! And a question on the axes; Are you also planning to model out the special axes on Veletarii, or will you leave them as they are? Good luck again laugh.png

I think I'm gonna go with the stock firemen, as I absolutely love their look:
