JSilverio
Starting a new Grey Knights army and what pulled me in was their aesthetics and fluff. I'm new to the Black Library and am willing to give a few novels a chance in direction of the Grey Knight novels. Question is, which are the best ones you've read and/or suggest to read? Let me know, thanks! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/ Share on other sites
Dumah
The Emperor's Gift is a good one - written by ADB so you already know it's going to be good. Also, if you're familiar with the Ravenor trilogy there's a neat tie-in there... Prot
The Emperor's Gift is a good one - written by ADB so you already know it's going to be good. Also, if you're familiar with the Ravenor trilogy there's a neat tie-in there... I think this is the best one. There is a lot of mediocre stuff out there for GK fiction... I could barely get through a lot of it. The Grey Knight trilogy by Ben Counter is okay, but now feels really dated. The first book is the best one I think. (It's just written in an era well before the HH books came out so some of the moments just feel a little... dated.) There was a thread going in the Grey Knights forum on Emperor's Gift. There's some controversy around it as it's quite a... weird tale. You get some cool insight into the Grey Knights but really the story is not the story... that is to say the book almost feels rushed to a conclusion and kind rammed at the back is this epilogue that follows the main battle, and imo it steals the show. There's lots of debate about how it ended that probably out lasts the main battle of the book. Otherwise there are lots of short stories out there that Black Library likes to compile once in a while so be careful. I've been burned many times on re-buying the same story with a new cover. A lot of it is skippable though. It's very light on theme and extremely repetitive in some cases. Dantay VI
Got to chime in and also say Emperors Gift is the BEST GK book. Read it read it read it.. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/#findComment-4217986 Share on other sites
b1soul
Concur that Emperor's Gift has a very rushed ending...it focuses a lot on the SW as well Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/#findComment-4219809 Share on other sites
HeritorA
b1soul - 'concur that Emperor's Gift has a very rushed ending...it focuses a lot on the SW as well'. It is not as rushed as all the Dan Abnett's books (especially Gaunt Ghosts, Titanicus and Double Eagle - just check them lol) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/#findComment-4220086 Share on other sites

The first book is fine, second middling and the third is just plain awful. Emperor's Gift is fine though Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/#findComment-4220172 Share on other sites
Kelborn
Read the first and second Counter books. The first was fine. Then I got a ADBs The Emperors Gift... And I loved it! Grey Knights and Space Wolves in one novel. Besides that I'm a ADB fanboy, it is really good. Give it a try and see if you like it. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/#findComment-4221350 Share on other sites

There's no way that the SW's actions in EG do not have massive implications (i.e. negative consequences) for the chapter Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/#findComment-4222008 Share on other sites
veterannoob
I echo The Emp Gift as well. Some helpful comments in this thread. I swear I'm not an ad bot:), things just happen to be relevant in some threads here. After TEG perhaps try the shorter works in Sons of Titan, which are David Annandale's two audio dramas and two stories, from Santcus Reach has well. If you want to hear authors Ben Counter & David Annandale talk about their take on GK the latest episode of Combat Phase podcast has both authors on. iTunes or link direct download below: traffic.libsyn.com/combatphase/Ep_122_GK.mp3 We talk news, games played and hobby, as well as in interesting upcoming episode on women (factions/characters) in wargaming. We are then joined by BL authors of Grey Knight fiction to talk the chapter and their stories. David Annandale joins us followed by Ben Counter. Finally Adric discusses bringing Grey Knights to the tabletop and constructing/painting an army. God-Potato of Mankind
There's a chunk of Grey Knight-yness in one of the later Ultramarine novels. I forget the name, the one after Dead Sky, Black Sun. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315706-grey-knight-novels/#findComment-4255576 Share on other sites
