Cultist Idea: Khorne Bloodreavers on 25mm bases?

It would seem that Khorne Bloodreavers from AOS come on 32mm bases.

I sorta thought about using these guys as inducted levy squads in a HH traitor militia army recruited from a world where they worship Khorne.

At any rate, do you think they can look decent as cultists with 25 mm bases, or are they simply too big?

From Atia, I think:

I really like them, but I'm just worried they're too big for use as Cultists. However, take into account that in HH V there are provenances called "Cult Horde" i.e. worship Khorne in my case, and "Tainted Flesh" which could represent increased size due to daemonic gifts and blessings.

Thoughts?

Personally, I'd only use them as cultists in a truescaled army, but then again, it really depends. Some people, I know, have used them as cultists (Adra'melek has, for one), but I don't personally like them for that use.

Then again, I don't generally use Cultists in general, so perhaps I'm not the best one to answer that question.

From Atia, I think:

hehe, yeah that's mine ^.^

I think you can make them work - they are fine next to Terminators/Gal Vorbak (and even ok next to a normal Marine if you imagine that these guys aren't normal mortals) f.e., and you can always say they are bigger 'cause they are empowered by Khorne or something - after all, in fluff, these models represent cannibals on steroids - not normal marauders - they are meant to be big^^

i probably wouldn't use too much of them in order to represent the elite part of the Khorne Cult - maybe one unit of them, and f.e. beastmen, DV cultists or something smaller looking for the "line" units ^^

Maybe I'll just use them for the unit champions and something special for the Force Commander, since he's actually supposed to be a daemon with the Cult Horde provenance.

Beastmen actually sound really cool! Didn't think of that.

Beastmen are just as big, if not bigger. I'm using them as cultists, but then I'm using Wrathmongers as Berserkers and Gal Vorbak as possessed who are all big.

Here are a few pictures

Edit: for the record, as you can see, the CSM from the CSM box are really REALLY small.

Given the options I think the Bloodreavers are the most affordable option if I were to buy anything at all. They're also my favorite by far. I looked over the Beastmen, and while cool I don't really like many of the sculpts. Compared to the Bloodreavers, they just look out of date. The DV Cultists are the cheapest option, since I already have them all :P. I suppose any money not spent on the Cultists is money I can spend on another Auxilia tank or something. Hmmm...

You know, after seeing these models in person at GW yesterday I think I'm going to go for it after all. With the two provenances I feel like I can justify it, not that I need to beyond rule of cool. Now, I need 100 of 'em. laugh.png

If you do what I did, you can dramatically reduce the size they are perceived to be, without actually changing their size or the the rest of your army. First, use 25mm bases and 32mm for your marines, use cork board/tiles to elevate both, but cut down the width to half for the cultists. Next, instead of removing the knives to add pistols, remove the axes and replace them with las/autopistols (the DV cultist pistols look great). Finally, and this is something I haven't seen anyone else do, remove the horns from their helmets. I'm still in the process of painting mine, but as I'm doing them for my Iron Warriors, I've used the same silver/gold scheme. Since they're still somewhat new, people are still used to seeing them almost exclusively in red, and changing that alters their perception of the model.

When I first pulled them out at my local GW, everyone was asking what models they were, even the staff member who used them to make his Khornate raptors, as their entire look has been altered without dramatically changing the base model. It also helps to reduce their perceived size if you use them as a meat shield for a character significantly bigger than them with greater elevation. I've converted up a juggerlord from the AoS Lord Celestant and doubled the width of his cork basing (as I do with all my Chaos HQs to help them stand out among their fellow marines) to give him an absolutely huge stature, and when surrounded by cultists, they barely reach his mount's ankle.

Good stuff, Pariah. 25 bases are a sure thing for when I use them. As for the weapons and stuff, I don't think I'm even going to bother. They have the option to replace their pistols with a second CCW, so I might do that or I may just leave them as-is. Their fluff will be that they hail from some barbaric world that has Khorne worshippers and little in the way of advanced technology. Rather than be conquered and forced into compliance as they would have been during Horus's loyalist days in the crusade, they were just integrated into the traitor militia. Badabing badaboom, only work required is 25mm bases. cool.png

That works too. The only reason I did all that to mine is so they'd look better with my existing marines.

Yeah that makes sense. At this point I have so much conversion work to do for other stuff simply assembling/painting will be a breath of fresh air!

I took a few pics of my WIP stuff today and got a few shots of the cultists so I actually show what I've done, instead of just telling.

Turns out I didn't half the thickness of the cork after all, so they still stand rather tall next to a marine.

Assuming you want the sculpt and have the time to recast, you can shrink them down to size using Hydrospan 400. It would be cheaper, as you wouldn't need to purchase more than a single set, however you would never be able to sell them if you get bored of the army, and if you don't purchase a small pressure pot, the eventual models could come out pretty bubbled.

Wow, I had no idea such a thing existed but that's really cool! I think for all the work involved I'd rather just settle with larger minis though, to be honest.
