Stepping back aboard

Good evening everyone!

With the release of Betrayal at Calth i've decided its time to jump back over to the heresy. As things stood prior to this, I have some Iron Warriors that i've been building primarily as a 40k force, using a mix of chaos marine boxes, as well as MK2 and MK3 armours. (check out my progress logs over on the chaos forum, or the WIPS)  I've been enjoying the building and painting of them, though they aren't really in a position to extend out into the Heresy era, even though ive gone ahead and ordered myself the lord of the fourth. While a more.. grounded person might decide to use the calth box to expand, i dont want to do that. I want to keep my Iron warriors in heavier looking plate.

So, moving from here, i have a vast plethora of legion options open to me. Much to vast if you ask me. I'm having a difficult time deciding between going loyalist or traitor.. both sides have appealing options, though i feel i want to lean alittle more towards Loyalist for the fact i already have a chaos/traitor force. I also want to focus more towards a close combat oriented force rather then drowning them in guns and bigger guns. The forces i keep looking back towards are the following

Imperial Fists: I think they would be fitting to work on, set them up across from my Iron Warriors, natural enemies. They do have some Mk4 upgrade kits, mostly in the form of the Warders.

Raven Guard: I enjoy the character of the legion, and they seem like a blast to play, only thing is i had the idea to do a pure MK6 force with them, so im not sure if i want to do it with Mk4s

Ultra Marines: I honestly am not sure why i keep coming back to them, but i do. I really like their upgrade kits, though im not sure how well they do as a combat force.

Blood Angels: Beautiful upgrade kits, but i dont really know any fluff for them in the heresy era, i haven't read any books with them.

Alpha Legion: Again, Beautiful upgrade kits, i got a set of torsos by accident in an order i made, and i love them. The helmets i plan on using, even if not as Alphas. They have lots of tricks that they can play on the field, and.. hey.. why are my own guys attacking me?

Word Bearers: The first heratics, they are the reason behind the start of the heresy, i wanted to tell myself no.. but im not sure.

Thousand Sons: I've been reading A Thousand Sons, and enjoying the book greatly.. but they dont have any kits for themselves out yet, so i wonder if it would be a better idea to wait?

Welcome (back)!

I'd suggest going ahead with a Loyalist Legion. Variety is always nice. Out of the Legions that you have listed, the Blood Angels probably fit the best. Mark IV + close combat seems to be the way they like to roll. The downside is that you're going to have to wait until around February to get their rules, and even then won't have all of the lore + special units/Primarch that most other Legions have at this point. They are a great looking force though, with a very different aesthetic to what you're already doing, and will probably be one of the most heavily close combat Legions.

Imperial Fists could do a templar-themed cc force, something that is relatively common where I play and very characterful. Ultramarines have some nasty cc units (Suzerains) but aren't particularly good at cc overall. RG would potentially be good but you can always do them with Mark VI in the future.

If you ended up wanting to go traitor, you can't go wrong with Word Bearers. Gorgeous models, very versatile but definitely aimed towards close combat and able to incorporate lots of daemons, if that's your thing.

Decisions are hard to make, but your subconscious always knows better. I started 40k Mechanicus but dropped it a while before going back, because I never felt at peace doing so. I went back and forth between 30k Legions, because one aspect about Mechanicum bothered me. I never really felt like it was a good idea though. So I fixed that problem with a few buddies and I am back on track.

But if you are unable to pin point your gut feeling, here is a trick. Pick 6 Legions and roll a D6 (can be done with any number, a coin for two Legions). If you land on a Legion and feel the urge to re-roll of find yourself hoping for a certain number, you have your answer right there ;)
