Back Into The Hobby - Salamanders

Hey

I used to be right into the hobby when I was younger but took a break at the end of high school and never got back into it (5 years ago). I recently finished uni and figured I'd get back into it.

I have a pile of marines from when I was active in the hobby so I figured I would paint what I have, maybe add a unit here or there depending on what I can dig out of my bits box.

Currently I have -

- 40 marines (mix of heavy and special weps)

- 5 Dev squad w/ rockets

- 5 Assault marines (probs go without jump packs because of fluff reasons?)

- 10 Scouts

- 5 Assault termies (TH+SS)

- Razorback/Rhino

- Landraider crusader (going to get bits to make it a redeemer)

I plan to make a vulkan, some sternguard (I want lots combi flamers, dont judge me) and maybe something else for HQ in smaller games

I dont have the new codex, so im not sure about a army list, if anyone could tell me whats good that would be great!

I bashed out a test marine today to see if I could still work a paint brush -

There is a shocking photo - I guess I need to learn how to do them as well. I am sort of happy with it, my highlighting is shocking but other then that I don't think hes too bad for 5 years not touching a brush

Not fully sold on the red casing on the bolter, I think it makes them too "dark angely" - thoughts? I do plan to add fire and the like to them, but I didnt want to run before i could walk.

I guess ill update this as I go along

So,

In the past week I have done some more painting and slowly starting to feel like ive got the hang of it all again which is nice.

Group photo of whats "done"

I have opted to go up 1 shade of green from Wargh Flesh to Loren Forest for the main colour (colour pallet shamelessly stolen from stoneheart)

Here are some pics of the 2 most recent marines showing the ~final~ scheme of the army - done today just before writing this post, I'm pretty happy with them, obviously there are a few mistakes here and there but for a test run they are good enough for me. actually doing the power pack made me realize how much I hated painting black :/

@Col.hertford - yeah, I agree, I would of hard a bolter on one of these two to show but Im not sure where they are in my pile of bits :/

Speaking of my pile of bits, I got some in the post, key bits being a Kurtha Sedd from the BaC box (that everyone else seems to have done too :/) to make a vulkan from because Im really not a fan of the GW one, as well as the model some bits and bobs, a seismic hammer for an ironclad dreadnought, sarus shields because they were cheap, not sure if ill use them for anything but it was a dollar for 10 or something, and sitting at my local GW is the crusader/redeemer upgrade frame for a land raider I have sitting around.

As well as that, I got a GK Incinerator and a Psilencer with the hopes of trying to use them as a heavy flamer. The Incinerator obviously looks more like a heavy flamer but I dont think it looks "heavy" enough, hence the Psilencer. Thats the best plan I have to deal with the heavy flamer issue at this point though, obviously the terminator arm is an option but I dont think im a huge fan of that, will have to see.

I also managed to nab myself some of the TT Adapters to convert the bases up to 32mm so that was a bonus, I was thinking id have to wait till feb or get some 32mm bases from GW themself

I have also been looking into casting as I have half of my existing models with the old alpha legion shoulder pads, that for the life of me I cant find anywhere anymore, if anyone knows where I can get another 30 or so that would be great.

Nice colours on the recent test marines, I do agree that the red bolter casing on the earlier one makes him look like a Dark Angel. Still though it is a nice shade you got going on for them.

I seen a conversion ages ago (can remember who it was on here) combining a Catachan/Cadian command squad heavy flamer and a melta bomb as the fuel tank for Space Marines that convinced me to do the same. I rationalized it by the reasoning that an Astartes' basic Flamer would be like a heavy flamer to Guardsmen. You could maybe try that.

yeah I thought about that too but I have the same issue with that as I do with using the incinerator, it doesnt look "heavy" enough, in an ideal world I would use the multimelta from the devs box with a flamer nozzle on it but they are so expensive to buy its a bit prohibitive

Hi ctrlchris, nice Sallies and there's no such thing as 'stealing' a colour palette from from someone, there's two ways to paint sallies in my opinion - neutral or bright - and given GW's range there's only one way to do neutral and that's the scheme we've both used!

If you're UK-based, I have a resin heavy flamer from the old sternguard upgrade set that I would be happy to send to you if you have something you are willing to trade? (pic from google)

If you're after army list hints, there's a thread in the Salamanders sub-forum that was started by someone in a similar position to yourself - might be worth checking out - http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/313827-looking-for-some-direction-on-the-salamanders/

It's just my opinion but I actually quite like the red bolters, maybe mix some black in with the red to make it less bright though?

Best wishes!

@stoneheart - Thanks for the offer but im in AU :/

@sicksix - Yeah, I think it does but I dont want a sternguard box :/ - well at least I dont think I do, I do have plans of making a sternguard squad down the line, but I was thinking I would simply buy parts from bit sellers on ebay or whatever as I planned to use FW torsos/heads for them. But in saying that I havent looked at the prices of doing it though bits sellers or what so I might even end up with the box, who knows.

Hey nice work on the Salamanders. I just recently came back into this and started up an Iron Hands force. Maybe for Veterans you could do a black band on their helmets to match the shoulder pads? I don't have anything to go with this I checked their section in the Index Astartes book and it didn't show any pics of Vets.

Can't wait to see more of these guys. :)

So I was bored today and I was wondering what I would do with veterans when I paint them so I went looking for some info on how they should look. I wasnt able to find anything leaning one way or the other. Does anyone know any better?

If you look here:

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Salamanders

You get a few pics that show veterans with gold helmets, looks a bit naff IMO but I paint mine with gold face-plates instead, which is more subtle. You could go codex-astartes and paint them white.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, I thought about the gold faceplate like you stoneheart, but I dont want to rip too much off :P

Might do them black, Im not sure, issue with that is I hate highlighting black, white might look ok, but isant there another chapter with green armor and white helms?

ctrlchris welcome back. Great choice with the sallies, like your colour scheme I much prefer the mooted sallie tones rather than the radioactive GW scheme. And your models are painted really well too.

With regards to vets, I don't use a a black/gold face plate or helm. My take is that the Sallies are too pragmatic for stuff like that. I kit bash older variants of armour Mk II/III/IV torso, pads helm etc, onto the standard tac kit. I then paint scales and flames onto the armour to differentiate them from the rank and file. There might be some examples in my gallery, if not I'll upload some pics tonight if I can get a chance.

Success!

I have managed to finally get a mold that I like

A shocking out of focus picture of the shoulder pad.

Im pretty happy with it, I might try and make some more molds to I can make a few at a time, will see how that goes.

I managed to pick up some glue and all that sort of stuff so I can actually assemble some of the minis that I have that aren't assembled, I havent done any painting because its been stupid hot/humid here so I havent bothered because bleh

I bought some sarus warrior shields a a little while ago and I finally got around to checking the size of them on a terminator.

http://i.imgur.com/vWFoC4I.jpg

Thoughts?

I think it looks pretty ok, the only shame is that all my terminators are already built so to attach the shield I will need to hack of the existing shield which is a bit of a shame, I might even buy another full assault termi from a bit seller so I dont have to hack up the one with the nice big shield, will have to see.

Nice join in the mold. But how big is that pad? I have some old metal DA pads and they are way too small for the modern plastics.

The are the same size as the alpha legion (maybe even a touch bigger) pads that fit fine on the marines I have.

So ive been messing around with my dreadnaught today and I dont like the idea of just having the standard AOBR dreadnaught so I messed around a bit and got

http://i.imgur.com/PDQTaLz.jpg

A) Not sure how I feel about how far out the terminator chest piece sits, I guess I could fix this by cutting into the chest cavity of the dread, but then the termi chest piece would be a bit wide, and Im guessing to make it fit, I will need to chop the sides of termi chest piece, which will resort in probably cutting into the wings which might look a bit :cuss

B) Helmet less head. a termi head hangs out too far I think, tac marine might work I guess? Helmet less head is the right size and fits easily. From memory the guy inside a dread is not dead, but mortally wounded, so I guess its possible to have marine in there who had his body blown off or something?

Thoughts?
