Alternative washes and where to buy them?

I really don't like getting invested in GW's paint line, because they are really pricey and get shuffled around too frequently for my taste..  After about 5 years of having nothing to do with them I ended up using their wash line..  until they completely dumped the old paints and rebooted the line with new washes that just weren't the same.  So I stocked up on the old washes, and was a happy camper..

Until now.  Six months of break from painting, and I return to find most of my washes dried up to some extent.  I hate the lid top pots with a passion.  So here I am in the market for washes, but I never tried out any alternatives.  I'm mostly interested in quality Brown, Orange (flesh), Yellow, Red, Green and Blue washes.  I realize that covers most anything anyway, but GW's new line seems to have different shades of the same color here and there - I have no use for that.  I want dark washes, end of story.

That was long enough for most I guess, so here's the question.  What alternative works for you, and where do you get them?  Places with shipping to Europe preferred, of course :) Thanks B&C.

This chart may help your decision. I personally have switched to secret weapon washes and couldn't be happier.

I've done some research on SW washes and there seems to be lots of complaints due to them being suspensions and not solutions, i.e. they do not settle correctly, and can leave a glossy finish..  Is this true?

It seems Army Painter's warpaint ink washes cover pretty much every need I have.. except for a flesh wash, surprisingly enough..

EDIT: Well, their new Ink set actually has the Flesh Wash but they don't ship to where I live, so yeah..  I'll have to grab a different flesh wash I guess.

Thus far I've used both black washes and their stone wash. None has been glossy but I'll let you know if any such things happen. I really hope it doesn't.

Army Painter are the best imo.

£1.80 for 17 ml in a dropper bottled.

Dark Tone = Badab Black
Strong Tone = Devlan Mud
Soft Tone = a dark Sepia

They've also got Red, Blue, Green and Purple all of which are quite neutral versions of those colours. Pretty basic, but they get most jobs done.

Where do you live that they don't ship? They seem to have a pretty comprehensive delivery range Try your FLGS? Army Painter products seem to be pretty widespread at this point.

I have had issues with Secret Weapon washes drying with a very glossy finish The few vallejo washes I've tried have been quite good, but they don't behave quite the same as other companies, so there's a bit of a learning curve with them.

P3 do a very good flesh wash.(seemingly no others for some reason).

If all else fails you can just make you're own with something like Vallejo glaze medium and some water (some might tell you more complex methods, but whenever I've needed to thin something down to a wash consistency this has done fine).

I'll order the new army painter ink wash set from firestorm games. Called them up about shipping and they were a most cheerful helpful lot. Thanks everyone. Once they arrive and I get to use them I will make a comparison topic to old GW washes. I don't have the new shades.

Secrect weapond washes ( personal favorite) Are good I use just about all of them at one point in time,

Pros

a lot of colors and can be thinned for glazes. Can be use in airbrush with out spalltering all over the place. Just use low PSi

Cons.

There more like thin paints, very heavy pigments can settle on bottom of pot causing the wash to different colors. Shaking it helps but gets foamy and air bubbles can be pain in dick.

AK interaction

Pros

Easy to use and thin so it won't over power layers, come in oil wash as well.

Cons

Price if your stateside, colors are set to true life military colors, mixing with fanstay colors can be difficult.

Scale 75 colors inks ( highly recommend all of scale color products)

Pros

very bright colors ( could be con depending ) mixes well with base colors to make glazes and can be use tint colors. Flows nicely off brushes can be airbush at very low psi.

Cons

Price stateside, limted colors, and can over power colors.
