Brand New to Tabletop List-making

I'm wanting to get a Dark Angels army started for Christmas, so I need a list for my list. I'm thinking I'll have at least a couple hundred dollars, but I need a codex, paints, the whole nine yards, not just models. I have no experience with the tabletop (other than reading things on tactics and watching videos on tactics and videos of games), but I think I know quite a bit of DA lore, so hopefully that won't hinder my ability to make a strong list. I'm thinking about getting Dark Vengeance, but I don't know about it. I think I want to shoot for a 1,000 point list to start off, but maybe a bit more, depending on how lame my Christmas list is this year. I want a mostly Greenwing list, but with some DW and RW support. I want the list to make sense fluff-wise, but kick ass on the table. I was introduced to the lore first, but I love strategy games and love to win. For the list, I'm thinking something along the lines of this:

Librarian, Mastery level 2 (Terminator armor?)

Tac squad of 5 with flamer, dedicated transport?

Tac squad of 5 with something cool, dedicated transport?

Devastator squad of 5(?) Plasma canon?

Black Knights (Grenade Launchers?)

Shooty Terminators

Deathwing Knights

I'm liking the idea of a really shooty list and heard that's what 40K is all about anyway, compared to Fantasy being about melee.

Throw in some upgrades or a few more tac squads to bring it up to 1,000p pts and how does that sound? I obviously could use a lot of help and have no idea what the point values are, either. I don't have anything, Codex, paints (know how to not paint like crap). Any help would be great. Thanks!

ill answer this in bullet points hopefully you find it helpful:

- aim for a 500point list its actually pretty complicated to make a 1000 point list right away let alone run it. 750p is probably the highest id start. much more manageable numbers. you want to buy more models than necissary fine by me but thats where id start. small points give you a feel for the basics and when your familiar with the game go up from there at a pace you feel comfortable.

- dark vengeance is a pretty good place to start, you get a heck of a bundle in there, alternatively you could get betrayal at calth if you want a box you could use to its entirety. you dont get stuff like the templates for heavy weapons, you dont get the basic core rulebook, but you get 2 more tactical squads (no grav guns though), one full terminator squad with all the trimmings for wargear almost (no assault cannon or plasma cannon), and a dreadnaught (a contempor mortis at that a very rare form of dreadnaught with special rules, hes much stronger than a normal dread and most people would let you proxy him as a venerable dread or a normal one since its a downgrade). it costs more though like 50 bucks more.

- as for the list of stuff i think its okay but terminators need love to make them work, they are a very clumsy unit on the table you will find when you use them. more terminators can help out, so can a land raider and terminator hq's, black knights are tough really really tough units but bikes really shine when you have lots of them. its the dilema of snacking on specialist units like bikes and terminators more is sort of a thing that needs to happen to help them a lot. they start to get addictive and soon your buying mountains of them and making whole lists about them. keep it under control and you can see that your dream is plausible and totally do-able. i run a mainly normal marine army and it works really good, look to things to make your army stand out in big point lists (2000+) like unique marine formations or unique units to put in a CAD via things like veterans or forgeworld marine tanks and dreadnaughts.

- also hi and welcome, im aura-enchanted welcome to the looney bin, we get our happy pills around here at noon

Dark Vengance is a good place to start, especially if you can get someone to split it with you.

I usually run my black knights as a command squad with apothecary for feel no pain and all plasma talons(purely preference)

regular Ravenwing bikers with grav guns are really good and the Sargent with a combi-grav.

If you want bikes try to find the old Dark Angels Battleforce box it gives a enough for a full Ravenwing attack squadron formation:

I wonder how many of the dark angel armies on here started with a dark vengeance box?

I have to agree its a great start. My local store will even do you a double box so you get two lots of da and no chaos or vise versa.

Though the models are posed it doesn't take much to convert them so once you start building up your force you will have plenty to do with any bits from other boxes you have not used.

At least 50% of my ravenwing started life this way.

As for what else you want, get your core force and find some friendly playyers who don't mind you using proxies. This will give you a chance to try before you buy and see how different units play.

Then its just a case of finding what you like.

Welcome to the unforgiven. You can check out any time you want but you can never leave!

500 points? Hm. I think I'm a good strategist, learn quickly and am smart (haha), but maybe that's a good idea. What kind of stuff can I afford to put on the table at 500 points(or 1000, for that matter)?

Terminators are a bad idea?

And no grenade launchers on Black Knights?

Only terminators and bikes are good when spammed?

And what's the deal with deal with grav guns? I'm seeing a lot about them. Aren't they new for the DAs? Is this hype for a new toy, or actually a good idea to use?

If I get a box, it's probably going to be Dark Vengeance, not Betrayal at Calth. I don't think I really liked the look of that, unless I should. Haha.

I don't really have a game store. There's one near-ish, but I couldn't count on someone going to one to grab a double-DA and no Chaos for me (I'm trying to make this list for a Christmas list, so I won't actually be buying anything myself) and can't really count on a store doing that for me, but it'd be awesome. I also don't think I will have anyone to split the Chaos with, so if I buy Dark Vengeance, I'll just end up selling the Chaos models on eBay. Also, JazzHandd, that's a good song. Haha. And thanks for all the welcoming.

having some termies is fine, an all termie army has issues.

The no grenade launcher is purely preference, so you may find them very useful, I would try it both ways a few times and see what your prefer.

No need to spam them but you can if you want to.

Grav is new for DA with the last codex, they are salvo 2/3 and bikes are relentless so they fire 3 shots at max range all the time. Grav wounds on your armor save (so 2 or higher for termies and 3 or higher for marines) and it is AP2. They are very powerful when hunting things like a riptide or marines.

Check sites like bartertown for someone willing to split the box with you, it may help you save some money.

So, I will probably want to take some grav guns with a tac squad, right? Or load out a dev squad with a bunch?

And do I want grenade launchers? Are they even any good?

Does anyone know of a good Android app that I can use to play around with to build an army or another way I can do this myself, or if someone could ballpark the point value of this:

Knight Master or DW command squad with Termie Libby, ML2.

Shooty terminators, maybe a ML.

Two combat tac squads, one with plasma pistol for the sarge and flamer, the other with a grav gun, naked sarge and rhinos for transport.

Devastators with grav guns.

Black Knights with GLs.

Is that a legal force?

And thanks a bunch to all of you.

1. Find the closest store

2. Buy the Dark Vengeance starter set

3. Buy the Dark Angels codex

One thing ive been doing is going to my local tabletop store and spectating. Learn to identify the different factions and more importantly what units they use.

And above all else read both the codex and core rule book cover to cover multiple times.

Thats about all i can give im quite new myself having started in july :/

I now love Battlescribe. I put in all of my unit's that I think I am wanting and came up with 1235 points, but I can drop the DW Knights for the extra points to get me down to 1000. I also didn't get to add my shooty Terminators.... But I know what I think I want to work towards getting in my force now to get me up to 1500 points, but I'm not confident that I should even be starting with 1000 now. Opinions?

battlescribe is kind of nuts, cut down on the nonsense in future lists and remember post them in the army list sub-forum
