qwerty2jam
Hey all, So new user, been lurking around, done the whole 'debate on my legion for 19473729529 years' and read most of the forums here and have hit the point where I'm ready to ask a question or two. So, major reason for me starting HH is the low price of entry because of the Calth box. After much deliberation and an initial choice to side with the imperial fists, I have fallen to Horus and the violent purification of the Night Lords. Now....I'm using terror assault. So that means 3 of the sexy terror squads for my troops and with only 10 men per squad the models in Calth are perfect. However they're a little bland for terror squads. So given that my funds are low and I already have to buy 3 of the choom sets from fw, what bits exist, either fw/gw/other to give my squads a bit of that night lord flavour? Are tomb King skulls the easiest ones to get? Any easy places to get home talismans? Anyone know of places to get, or how to paint/model flayed skin? Please note I'm not the hugest fan of all the bat stuff everywhere and will be keeping it to a minimum of possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Qwerty Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316397-a-new-night-lord-modelling-advice/ Share on other sites
SkimaskMohawk
Hey there, for my stuff I used a bunch of bits; skulls from the tomb guard banners (with chain attached), ork nob 3 skulls attached to plate, various skulls on chains from chaos warriors and the absolute best is the dark eldar hellion skull accessories as well as all the barbed chains and such. The lots of bat wing stuff doesn't really play a big part so don't worry too much about it. For flayed skin Augustus has a tutorial that's linked on the first page of the Murderers Call an I've done on for free handing lightning that's in there somewhere too (don't think it's linked but it should be around pg 104) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316397-a-new-night-lord-modelling-advice/#findComment-4233702 Share on other sites
qwerty2jam
Looked around at those parts, all excellent suggestion, just got to find a bitz shop that actually has them in stock !!! Started looking at how to make me own rope/chain to attach to skulls myself as that might be on of my only options. That flayed flesh tutorial is great, I just hope it translates to slightly larger parts, I want great drapes of flesh falling from my terror squads, almost like necromancy flayed one models (not quite that excessive). I figure I could also make a press mold for some flat skulls to put onto the flat shoulder and chests/legs as well. If anyone has any other advice keep it coming! Marshal Loss
If you don't mind going outside GW, companies like secret weapon minis sell packs of skulls Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316397-a-new-night-lord-modelling-advice/#findComment-4233979 Share on other sites
Black_out
Secret weapons Sack o'corpses and skulls were a good investment for me. Loads of Dark Wldar bits are perfect along with Chaos Warrior and Zombie bits. Balthamal
Secret Weapon do packs of skulls and limbs that make excellent additions to any aspiring bringer of bloody judgement. Aside from that I've done flayed flesh, liberal daubing of blood on weaponry and such and really stretched out bits from the Vampire Counts/Tomb King ranges. One thing I found incredibly useful was chain and barb wire, makes adding things very easy and in keeping with the character of the Legion. I highly recommend getting a set of helms and torsos just to break up some of the plain plate, not withstanding the fact that they're great, it also gives you plenty of generic helms to make trophies from too And welcome to the VIII Legion. Skinning pits are the first left, the Flayer's Fancy is the third on the right and the trophy collection is down the stairs at the end of the hall. qwerty2jam
I have absolutely no objection with going to third parties, I rather enjoy it for small bits and the odd weapon, I enjoy kit bashing more than I probably should. As to the Ol' chainglaive is the 5 pack from anvil industries the best way to go? Anyone got an example of it on some miniatures? Any places to get alternate sources of choom (volkite chargers)? I will get the torsos and stuff eventually, well....definitely the heads because they're amazing but again it's a funds issue. Hmmm and while I'm at it, why not a tactics question.....make this a help a new murderer out thread. What is your favourite source of anti-heavy tank (Spartans etc) given the terror assault RoW and a general hatred for fielding tanks? Balthamal thank you, I'll stop by your suggestions on my way to the blood baths, I hear they play a lovely collection of the screams of the dying to sooth the soul while you relax. Black_out
Anvil is the only place I know of but that doesn't mean there aren't other sources. Same for volkite. Melta bombs and chainfists along with dreadnought ccw's are all great for cracking Spartans with armored ceramite. Without it, melta weapons are an obvious choice. SkimaskMohawk
The anvil chain glaive works well (on mobile so no link), I also forgot to mention kroot hanging meats and knives work super well, as do raptor arms to mix it up between shooting and cc guys Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316397-a-new-night-lord-modelling-advice/#findComment-4234173 Share on other sites
qwerty2jam
Thank to all for the advice. Over the last day or two I kind of got caught up in modelling and painting flayed flesh and was wondering just how much the Night Lords would have used it. Ultimately I think it would be a very good way to spice up rather plain old marines and a very drab colour scheme (mine is very dark, being kantor blue, washed with nuln oil, then drybrushed back up to kantor). I am wondering if it's too much even for the 8th, or if that's right up their ally? Slips
If you want some sort of "limiter" on the amount of Flayed Flesh, look for entries that are Capable of taking 'Trophies of Judgement' Otherwise, use as much of it as you feel. NonExistentOne
If you're bad with modeling GS like me, you can opt for these for flayed skin: http://www.spellcrow.com/skin-tabards-p-251.html Also spotted these chainglaives: http://www.spellcrow.com/space-knights-doublesaw-weapons-p-328.html Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316397-a-new-night-lord-modelling-advice/#findComment-4236197 Share on other sites
qwerty2jam
After some fooling around with flayed flesh I've decided to go with a little bit on each squad, almost like a group marking, on the right shoulder pad (can post pictures tomorrow, pretty happy with it). Thanks heaps for finding those skin tabards, they are just perfect for unit leaders!!! Now an issue. I've done test model upon test model and yes while they're on the terrible $14 for 3 marines clip togethers I still can't get the blue in a way I like it. I go kantor, nuln/drakenhoff, drybrushed up to kantor again and it just looks so......flat. I have flayed skin on a shoulder, pale gold trimmings, I've even got the boots, kneepads and helmet as bone and the armour just looks like a child did it. Does anybody have any advice at all to help me?! SkimaskMohawk
Night lord stuff can get a bit flat unless you do some line highlighting or use lightning to distract from lack of said highlights. My personal recipe is regal/kantor blue, layer of kantor/regal and macragge and then a black wash Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316397-a-new-night-lord-modelling-advice/#findComment-4237243 Share on other sites
qwerty2jam
Warning warning warning Bad painting incoming, also taken and uploaded with iPhone as its my only device atm, forgive the potato quality and the inability to embed images. If any of you have the patience to have a look for me I would love opinion on the self made flayed skin and the Lightning effects. The painting is terrible as I'm still working out how I want to do it. http://imgur.com/a/JL8Og Cheers all.
