Librarian Consuls

Are they worth it? I was thinking of taking one as I've made and painted one with plasma pistol and staff in power/artificer armour and one in cataphrakti with a drakscael shield and force sword, but looking at the costs I'm not sure they are worth it, coming in at 95pts just to be level one before any other equipment, with the terminator one coming to 140pts with no master crafting and just level one, which seems a tad underwhelming.

The role I was planning on running him would be with a tartaros unit (power fists and heavy flamer Salamander legion) to buff them or to try and cut down power armour power fist/axe sergeants before they could strike the terminators, but at that cost I'm thinking I might as well stick my Preator in there and take a thunderhammer consol or chaplain to support one of my other squads.

Any one really use Librarians in any role outside of summoning shenanigans with word bearers?

Psychic Shenanigans are fickle but, unless your up against WB's Daemon Spam or Primarchs (especially Morty or Horus), you should have no real opposition in terms of being able to use your powers.

Instead of using your Libby in that manner, consider the consequences of him successfully casting malediction onto a vehicle and shooting it with 40 Volkite Culverin shots instead, or something to that effect.

Also, nothing is cheap in 30k :p

It's more I'm concerned that at paying 140pts for the terminator level one his hcances of getting a dud power power so to speak is likely.
I was thinking telepathy or Biomancy, both being able to help the unit survive longer, or by just zapping enemy units/maledicting them.

I don't have my psychic cards in front of me, but almost none of the primaris powers are "duds," and if you're a Level 1 psyker, since you only get one power, you get Psychic Focus for free, which means that you will always get the primaris in addition to whatever you roll. Problem solved! Just be sure to pick a discipline where the primaris is useful (or plan your game around one of those disciplines). Divination is good for this.

I'd go full bore for ML2 then. You'd have to shrink the rest of your list and he becomes that much of a bigger target but, the increase in # of powers might be worth it for you.

We also have a few solid, but expensive, defensive relics that might help such as the Void Shield Harness and Warp Shunt Field.

I love it. My ears turn red every time I jump into a thread and see the volkite Culverin/Malediction trick mentioned. Depthcharge made that tactic of mine famous.

One option I like is putting a Librarian with Scriers Gaze in a Dreadclaw, for a drop assault army. Maybe stick him with a unit of terminators and put them in your first wave, so they can assault 2nd turn. The benefit of having him in your first wave gives you a reroll on reserves, and so can really help Orbital assault armies deliver, when and where they are needed.

Relics? Where are they? I have the two red books and can't see them in either.

@Electric Paladin: That's a reason why I was thinking Telepathy or Biomancy, as both of them have primaris powers that nicely deal with 2+ saves and potentially can do enough wounds to tear a chunk out of a veteran or terminator squad. Divination could be interesting, it's just in the list I don't really have any units that it's primaris would be super effective, in lists where I take a plasma gun support squad or Pyroclast squad I can see it being big.

Athrawes: That scriews gaze plan sounds good ane may use it in my Traitor scars if I ever do them as they would be a drop pod army.

Book 4 has them since it was released Afterwards.

As well as each section on the legions talking about their specific relic in their Additional Wargear section

Librarians are a lot more expensive than in 40k, but there's a lot less psychic shenanigans in 30k games, and you'll probably have free reign to cast all your powers.

Word Bearers are the Legion of choice currently if you want a large dice pool.

Buuuut... probably Thousand Sons will also be pretty good.
