Freeblade allies

I really want an imperial knight. What does everybody reckon about having a freeblade? I'd like to use him as if he was rescued many moons ago and he's now aligned himself with the first legion! I feel that he would have a place in the army having fought for them ever since, a warrior that's trusted in battle and looked after but will never be allowed to know anything about our 'strange' customs or reasons for secrecy. He's learned never to ask and that he's happy with his place on the outskirts of the order much like the watchers in the dark!

You don't need to complicate things fluff wise. You can just say it's a Campaign expedition fleet and the Knight Freeblade is there as part of the same fleet. No need to twist and turn the fluff just to justify a Knight tagging along.

Cheers.

Something as your considering your paint scheme:  many knights have impressed the Astartes that they are working besides enough to be awarded the right to add the chapter's badge to their heraldry.  Maybe something to add on after a few games.

This.  If I didn't have a bunch of FW to buy for 30k, I'd be getting a knight-lancer to go along with my DA...not in DA colors, but with a modestly-sized DA badge prominently displayed somewhere.

I personally think your Knight should earn it in a game first though. devil.gif

Oh, absolutely....and in spectacular fashion...has to do something you'll still talk about ten years later, like when my plasma cannon dreadnought in 3rd edition (when only DA could have such things!) shot down two hammerheads on back-to-back shots. 3 to hit, 6 to glance, 6 for "destroyed". Chance of doing it on any given shot? 1/54. Chance of two consecutive shots succeeding in the feat? 1/2916!!! THAT is the sort of epic awesomeness that it takes for an outsider to earn the right to incorporate a chapter badge into his personal heraldry.

I started with the same idea; a Freeblade atached to my DA. Then i got another Knight Titan and am now working on modifying the freeblade into a small Freeblade Brotherhood. The hearaldry incoprorates the sword from the DA icon (as this is common enough) but works nicely to tie things together on the table.

Just get a Knight, you won't regret it.

From a list building/gameplay standpoint: I got a Knight (built as Errant variation) right after they came out as I felt they were the missing link in the then 6th edition codex in the 6th edition ruleset.  It was the perfect balance of mobility, firepower and staying power.  It basically gave DA the ability to effectively deal with MCs and Vehicles effectively.  6th edition was great since we had the good prescience for them.  7th edition made them better since you could cast invisibility on them AND they could hold objectives.  Now that the 7th edition book has come out, I haven't really found a space for them only because I've been having so much fun with the formations.

From a fluff/hobby standpoint:  The Knights were, to me, the first step in GW getting some things really right as far as the monstrous creatures were concerned.  Wraithknight and Riptide be damned! I feel the knight is the pinnacle of Imperial representation on the tabletop.  Ominous, tough, loyal.  My knight is painted in Deathwing colors and has been adorned with some DA heraldry like Cypher and March have mentioned.  The story behind my knight is that it's the last of a staunchly loyal imperial house that dates back to the legion's origins on Caliban.  A house so old that it carries just the faintest knowledge of the legion's dark secret, and as such this Knight Errant accompanies the Deathwing when it really needs the big guns...

Personnaly I saw the knight like the perfect occasion to include and paint something that I could field with my DA that has not DA icons/colours. :D

It gve me the occasion to paint red and pure white, 2 colours that I don't use as main army colours. It was also my first attempt at battle damage.

The thing with a knight is that, its look make it clearly imperial, it's not tau, it's not eldar, it's clearly an imperial creation so it fits perfectly with whatever imperial army. However it's still visually different from normal tanks and infantry, hence it doesn't really matter if it is painted in a scheme different from your DA., it helps to individualize it a little more. Just find a colour that mix well with green and white (I've chosen red because it's green's complementary colour) and it will work great. On a side note it allowed me to pay tribute to our venerable brother Argos and the B&C.

Check my sig for more modelling details

Its a Panzer Grey base with medium grey dry brush followed by some washes then bits are picked out such as pistons with inks so they look oily and shiny metal parts etc.

The underneath doesn't show that much so its done for speed with the focus on the body plates

The blue plates were sprayed on the frame the main body was done separately with the detail being done as much as possible before final assembly, the whole thing breaks down for transport purposes with removable arms and the torso lifts off a central pin, there's a series of magnets on it as well for changing guns and also locking the central pin in place. I could do to do some pics of it really, the magnets were on a different scale to the small stuff I'd done before you'd struggle to knock the gun off or anything and you can lift the whole thing, its nice having the torso movable.

"vallejo panzer grey primer" brilliant spray primer use it a lot where your looking for Black-ish/ Dark Grey but black itself is well too black and grey looks to washed out. The other way of doing it is with some form of blue wash
