Hengist Ironfang
Hi all its been a while. The new Heresy box has finally given me the cheaper gateway into heresy so I'm back. I'm looking to run BA but have a two fold question, obviously with their list still MIA I'm trying to keep it pretty generic at the mo with tac squads and a few tanks. However one unit I do really want to field is a 20 man assault squad, nothing says BA like jump infantry and I'll have a bit of money left after Xmas to treat myself. So with this in mind 1) how good are assault squads with combat shields? 2) where does anyone get 20+ shields to kit out a squad? To my knowledge there is just the two combat shields, on the old assault squad sprue and the command squad sprue. What does everyone do for theirs? our_baz
Anvil industries do a decent range of combat shields. Can't remember what other third parties stock off the top of my head tho. I can't answer your first question, but I'm sure another frater will be able too. Stofficus
Assault squads are such a points sink that they tend to attract a good deal of firepower - by Baneblade, for instance, is very fond of assault squads. This is partially a byproduct of how they sort of demand some kind of HQ support to be really worthwhile; a chaplain, for instance, if they want to beat other units in melee - remember, an assault squad has no more assault potential than a tac squad save for a few extra power weapons, and cost a lot more points for their mobility. AGPO
There's also the one in the Dark Angels box which actually looks really cool on a Blood Angel. As far as getting enough combat shields go, your best bets are a) the WFB range, b) press moulding or c) third party suppliers. v6v77
Running the squads as ten man veterans with all PW and CS and furious charge would make a nasty (if expensive) unit.no JP though. Hengist Ironfang
Yeah I've toyed with despoilers and vets and I do have a 10 man mkVI vet unit but I just feel that I need to have the jump infantry in my IX legion somewhere! I'd like them to be game effective but I don't mind having an unoptimised unit or two. Currently no they aren't any better at assault than other choices but that could all change when book 6 comes out. Xenith
Kind of on a similar page, are assault squads actually worth it? They seem sooo expensive for what they can actually do. Slips
Theyre expensive, no doubt. And due to that, theyre not a "slot in" type unit, theyre a focsl point unit. The best use of them, imo, is in Angels Wrath lists but, where theres a will theres a way they still bring 3 power weapons per 10 as a troops option with jump packs.
