Infantry legion

Guys, considering the new box, making a Legion is far more possible now than before, however the dollar is really expensive here where I live, so I just can't buy tanks and other more expensive stuff much, so I got ask, with what comes with the battle box (that I can buy more with more ease) which Legions can I make with them?

Just so is understandable, I like all Legions, not equally (I mean Night Lords gets love because of ADB, and White Scars because of Scars) but enough that I'm willing to build any of them.

This is by far the most common question in regards to the Heresy, which Legion best suits "x" style. The truth is the Legions are so vast they don't have to be, they're not pidgeon-holed like the 40k Chapters/Legions. Every Legion utilised mass-infantry attacks, every Legion utilised mass-tank assaults, every Legion defended sieges, every Legion assaulted sieges, every Legion used all tactics.

There's pretty good indications (apply salt to taste ;) ) that with the HH replacing LotR as GW's third core game, that the plastic HH range will increase in the new year. This includes tanks, transports, all the "essentials" to any Legion.

My advice??

Choose a Legion who's fluff/history you like, choose a Legion who's paint scheme you like. Do not choose a Legion based on the contents of this one box.

Jono

Agreed with Grotsmasha on all accounts :)

I'd add some more points :

1) Follow Grotsmasha's advice in selecting the Legions you like the most. You say you like them all, but come on ;) Right off the bat you name two that you seem to favour over the other :)

2) Once you select amongst the Legions you like the most based on fluff and/or visual appeal, then it's time to pick the Legion with the special rules and the units that you feel will sustain your playstyle the most. I'm going to sound like a dirty optimizer, but even if fluff wise all Legions used the full range of the tools at their disposal and all did Massed Infantry, some do them better than the others.

Because, let's face it, you want an army that is good at its job and doesn't get wiped out too easily :p

Legions that can do infantry the most effectively are Legions that get benefits (either from their rules or Rites of War) to :

- Deployment options (Infiltrate, Outflank)

- Range of the core Troops or effectiveness at long range of the Heavy Support-ish squads (example Death Guard with Legion Heavy Support as Troops, Iron Warriors)

- Mobility

- Leadership bonuses against Pinning tests

All these bonuses stack well with a large number of footslogging units :) For example, Iron Hands that get benefits to resistance against shooting makes it more interesting to run them in transports because as the unit is more resistant, you need less of them (and besides, you'll be targeted by S7+ weapons so that -1S on shooting attacks really only matters for close range firefights against Bolters :) ).

Legions that I feel do well massed Infantry based on these 4 criteria :

- Sons of Horus (Reavers mainly, plus Deep Strike shenanigans with Abbadon and Horus)

- Death Guard

- Night Lords (Terror Squads, mainly)

- Word Bearers (plus, you get to play the role of a ruthless commander who doesn't hesitate to sacrifice his squads in the name of the Word)

- Iron Warriors

- Alpha Legion (Infiltrate yay !)

- Raven Guard (Infiltrate yay !)

That was in the case you wanted to play a footslogging army :)

On the other hand, you could go for Orbital Assault which favours (and almost necessitates) an Infantry heavy force :)

with what comes with the battle box (that I can buy more with more ease) which Legions can I make with them?

None. The paint you apply determines which Legion they become, and that is sold separately.

Really, this question is like asking what armies the SM tactical squad can be used with, and the answer, as you have seen, is any.
