The first supreme grand master?

Some tidbits from the new garro novella do not click if you plan to read it , I just figured they were relevant to this discussion.

‘I have passed back and forth across the stars through secretive byways, and by means that only the Sigillite understands,’ he said quietly. ‘I have dug up a dead man who lost his mind, stolen a loyal son from his brothers… These and many others, all to press-gang them into the same ghost army I now march with. For what? For a purpose whose design is beyond my ken? So that Malcador can have his grey legion for tomorrow’s wars? That is not what I hoped for. It is not who I wish to be.’

‘Whatever great schema the Sigillite plans to assemble, I am not a part of his endgame. He confronted me on Titan, in the hall of the hidden fortress that even now he builds for his knights. I knew then. I am his tool. It is true that his purpose aligned with mine, for a while… but I look over my shoulder now and see that they diverged a long time ago.’

Garro walked on, wondering how many others there were like him, at large in the galaxy at this moment. How many men in grey, featureless armour at the Sigillite’s beck and call? He considered what he had seen on a mist-wreathed moon of Saturn and the moment of insight that had come to him there. My fate does not lie on Titan, he had told himself. He would have to trust that it would reveal itself in due time, rather than allow itself to be sought out.

Things like these are why I tend to lean more toward Janus being Omegon, or someone else entirely, especially considering that Mortarion stated that Janus "Turned on his brothers to seek some half-imagined redemption," or something to that effect.  Garro has no need of redemption, he never strayed from the Emperor's side in word or deed from the beginning.

Garro, meanwhile, would be a good fit for the Inquisition.

Yeah I've read the new Garro book. Amazing novel by the way, everyone should read it anyway.

They seem to be keen to give Garro his own arc now. Which is fine, and it only further adds to the mystery of Janus.  But I think now the Knights Errant -> Grey Knight link is all but impossible to deny now. They've outright stated it now.

The real question is, who makes the cut? I was extremely sad when Iacton Qruze died, but I understand why. There are still a lot of other Knights-Errant alive at time of writing (although I'm sure more will perish before the HH series runs it's course).

It's just occurred to me that the Grey Knights would have needed more than just the eight first Grand Masters as founders. They would have needed experienced and appropriately skilled Astartes to help found their Librarius, Apothecarion and Forge. Admittedly, those specialists could also have been GMs, but it would seem rather a stretch.

Also, would the Prognosticars have been part of the chapter from its inception or would they have evolved as a specialism later?

Oh yeah, I'm sure this is what the Errants end up being. Their recruitment drive isn't just about finding the 8, it's also finding the support staff to found the core functions you mentioned (Forge, Apothecarion, Librarius). As I understand it, we have a Master of Forge, Chief Librarian and Chief Apothecary who are officers but not Grand Masters in our Chapter structure (pretty sure the codex mentions them).

From it's inception. They're absolutely vital to the Chapter's mission, without them the Imperium would've crumbled millennia ago. They're also a very Sigilite creation, future-reading psykers locked in a tower trying to divine threats.
