Making the most of the plastics from HH box

SW1

Recommended Posts

So I've ended up with two copies of the new boxed game and I'm looking to maximise the options available to me. So I'm looking at painting up:

3 x 20 man tac squads

3 x 5 man support squads (one of each special weapon)

2 x 5 man heavy squads (one of each)

The extra bodies I don't have to worry about as there's some resin and metal models needing weapons. ;)

As I've never played a game of 30k does this seem a rounded start to a force or should I be looking at splitting one of the 20 man squads into 2 vet squads and use up some of the spare heavy/special weapons?

I'm also tryin to work out what units use combi weapons? I'm more than happy to buy missing bits to make up a squad but don't want to buy them for nothing.

Any pointers or direction would be handy. I'm looking at doing a loyalist force but also mixing in squads or models from loyalists made up of the traitor legions using their Terran paint schemes instead.

If you have a pretty strong Motorpool, yes this would be a good start.

If you're just going to be running Footslogging Marines, POTL or Chosen Duty are better investments due to the units then having more punch and utility.

Units that use Combi-Weapons:

  • Terminators
  • Seekers
  • HQs/Character
  • Tac Vets to an Extent (iirc?)

And a few Legion Specific units like Mor Deythan for the RG.

A common mistake there. Support squads and heavy weapon squads die to everything because anyone looking and seeing massed melta/plasma or missile launchers knows not to get involved in the slightest and blows them away.

Pride of the Legion is the way forward with using two sets of BaC. Can have a solid block of tactical marines, a veteran squad rocking heavy bolters and a nice 10 man squad of Cataphractii, add in a contemptor with 2 KAC and it's a good foundation. Be warned however, you're not making a great list using just the contents of the box. As I suspect the intention was, you use it to build upon later with some of the more exotic toys available from FW

Yes, BaC is very much a Launch Point it is by no means a self-contained and competitive army ESPECIALLY when matched up against someone who has the necessary tools. Just look at the few topics on the subject we have in the sub forum :)

This is just the stepping stone to getting started. I've spent the best part of £200 on plastics to force myself to get started. ;)

I've got the first two books looked at them and then got a bit overawed with the sheer number of options. I've got a bunch of mk3 which I've ended up chopping a few up to create some interesting =][= characters. So got in various states of broken bits 40+ old school rhino kits. Most need chopping up and major fixing but I'm willing to spend the time doing that. I've also got the metal turrets/sponsons to make a fair number into preds. There's also 3 landraiders needing tlc and 6 or more old metal landspeeders.

Well then!

All you need now is a few of the Special 30 Stuff and you'd be all set!

And dont worry about the sensory overload that is seeing 30k for the first time. Give it a few reads and it gets easier to navigate.

This. It boggled my mind to begin with. The terminology was very different, and it felt both very restrictive and incredibly customisable at the same time.

It will click, and you'll be building lists in no time :-)

BaC gets you all the infantry you need. Just be sure what you want before you start investing in some of the FW vehicles and unique units.

Yes! 30k much more than 40k is better enjoyed if you plan heavily around your purchases!

Nothing worse than seeing that pile of expensive, unbuilt resin that you dont have the time to get to! *glances at worktable and weeps a little*

I already have some IH's resin HH goodies I never got round to doing. Though let's be honest I need some serious CHOOM added to what I already have. ;)
