Special Squad themed new Legion project

Hi gang. Long time no post.

Some of you may remember my Ultramarines project from a while ago? That ended up being a 40k army for a campaign that never took off and got side lined.

Now I have been challenged to a Battle of Calth challenge whereby a few of us buy the box, make a Legion out of it and add bits and hey presto, a new 30k gaming group is born.

I am looking into my Legion and I am as usual getting stuck, so some general advice again please.

Needs to be loyal

Needs to have BL characters (although not necessarily models)

Needs to have a decent melee capability as I do like to smash face with a beat stick sometimes

But the main thing, I want to focus on a special squad. And this really will form my decision of which Legion. Phalanx Warder, Suzerain, Firedrakes, Phoenix Guard etc

Using your experience guys, what really stands out as the most exceptional special squad that really works on the table and you can theme a list around it?

Thanks gang.

There are none, really. Firedrakes have the most info. But they are boring and flat.

Alpha Legion Headhunters; kinda suck, and not really representative of A-Team analogies which include the First Captain, and Arkos (that guy who messed up Vraks and caused an entire Daemon Incursion).

Atramanetar Terminators have a particularly well known background, but currently lack rules. That said, taking Lugft Huron's Chapter master of the Astral claws model gives an awesome Lion icon and incredible weapon.

The Gal Vorbak have a book.dedicated to them, and the cutest bromance in 30k woth Khârn.

Although we don't have rules, White Scar Keshig Terminators and Blood Angel Sanguinary Guard are there.

Post Heresy outbreak, Falkus Kibre has a role to play as Abaddons Right Hand Man, also as Captain of the Justaerin prior to Mournival rank. Abaddon is an incredible model, and Justaerin look sweet.

Typhon and his Grave Wardens, but there is little info about them individually, as the DG are still to recieve a book that doesn"t revolve around Garroflake.

I looking at your requirements and all I can think is Imperial Fists led by none other than the man, Siggy G. In the black templars we say the sigismund has ZEAL( I'll need someone to put this in all red) and is the most loyal astartes ever, He has an entire book dedicated to him( Templar), and his melee capability is easily the best. On a good day he's even able to go toe-toe with some primarchs. As a force multiplier he allows you to take a ROW and templar squads, who are great cc, though their lack of ap 2 means their restricted to power armored hunting.

The templars themselves I believe have some fluff blurbs in book 3.

Before we get on the sigismund circle jerk train that inevitably pops up in these threads, Sigismund basically told his lord, genefather and the immediate subordinate to the Emperor to get stuffed because of what a warp witch said.

He got scared from what a human girl said to him.

Enough with the hyperbolic references, its like reading Mat Ward all over again.

Edit, and no. He cannot toe to toe with any Primarch.

Having read these suggestions and looking at them they are pretty good.

Firedrakes plus the mantle drake praetor are definitely awesome but a little boring. I know that's odd to say but still.

Sigismund and his Templars are amazing, and definitely worth of their own force, but a little over done? Fists in 40k in my local meta are well represented anyway so not sure. But they are definitely worth keeping on the back burner!

The ones that stick in my mind at the moment are

Suzerains led by a CC Praetor (but it is more UM)

Phoenix Guard Terms led by a similar.

Pollux leading Phalanx Wardens but similar problems as Sigismund (although probably less represented)

Gal Vorbak are awesome but another player friend of mine is all over it. As is Red Butchers.

Have thought about waiting for Wolves and Lions as I know I will be interested.

A common long term mistake that leads to army ADD, is to pick something in relation to "does this make me a special snowflake". If you want Imperial Fists, play Imperial Fists. If there are 5 Inperial Fist players in your meta, it just proves that they are awesome and you can brofist about it everytime.

Then you'd be one of the few better off waiting for Book 6 and its Shattered Legion List because that kind of mindset will get you nowhere in regards to sticking to a Legion.

(hopefully this comment didnt come off as too Aggro)

Read the First few pages of the "Legion For You..." thread again and try the methods we suggest in helping you choose one.

Oh I wish I could but I just can't seem to make them look cool on the table top. My eyes might be finally bored of seeing Ultramarines.

Which is a shame because I'd LOVE to do Dark Angels with an Unremembered Empire theme.

Especially if one of my compatriots goes Night Lords.
