mondamoto
Hello, Like many people I have purchased 3 copies of the Betrayal at Calth box sets to get started playing Horus Heresy. I have not decided on a chapter just yet but it will be either the Ultramarines or Space Wolves. To get started I purchased a Legiones Astartes: Crusade Army List book which I assume will give me everything I need to field a generic starting force. Then when I decide on a force I just need to purchase the corresponding book which will contain special units and characters for a given army. Am I correct to assume that I can use older version of the rhino based vehicles, rapier and Tarantulas I know they are not as nice as the newer Forgeworld versions but it will free up money for Forgeworld troops and I can upgrade them at a later date. I also ordered a set each of Cataphractii Special weapons and Power Axes and a couple of Contemptor weapons and I had a set of Heavy weapons, Special Weapons and command upgrade pack from a past project so I am probably good there. What should I get next and is there anything from the current 40K line that can do double duty such as the drop pod. Also could you use bits such as assault trooper legs to the MK4 bodies to make my own assault troops or any other 40K bit. Thanks in advance for any help. Deekthegreat
Rhinos work for 30k. Whirlwinds as well and basalisks as well if youre not fussy about putting 2 mk4 marines on the basalisks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316662-horus-heresy-newbie/#findComment-4240907 Share on other sites
Phalanx Warder
There are many units that can pull double duty (Land Raider(las cannon only), Rhino, Vindicator, Thunderfire Cannon, scouts. ect...) you need to get into the books and look at what you want to field outside of 40k. What is your play style? how do expect to play your legion? its 30k so anything goes... you want an Alpha Legion gunline... go for it! How about a fast moving assaulty Death Guard army... have at it! Whats that you say?? a gunline World Eaters army. Sure! My following statement is a bit of a cop out but.... There is no restriction on your legion that you don't put into it yourself, pick the legion that best represents you and make it play the way you want it to. I am an Imperial Fist player and I had to deviate from established "they do this" to make it work for me. I hope that helps. Welcome to the Heresy, there are no brakes. You have been warned! Relict
If you use some Legion-specific hatches, etched brass, and transfers, you can build yourself some great-looking Rhino-based vehicles even if you use the 40K versions as starting points. As for infantry, I strongly recommend getting yourself one of those new Betrayal at Calth kits. All the PA minis in that box are Mark IV and kitted out appropriately for 30K. At $150, it's great value. Save your money for the Legion-specific units, characters, and Primarchs. You wont be able to use the axes without a lot of cutting. Next steps are to pick your favourite legion and models! Lord Asvaldir
Three boxes, wow that's a lot of new toys to play with! As far as those two legions go unfortunately space wolves probably won't have rules for at least another year at best, since the next Horus Heresy book coming in February is confirmed to not have their rules. One can hope though upgrade kits for space wolves are coming soon. Ultramarines are all good though, their rules are in book 5, tempest. As far as 30k/40k crossover, almost all the space marine vehicles can work with the exception of the newer space marine models like stormtalons and the anti air tanks. While technically the rhinos, predators and vindicators are not the correct model and look slightly different, no one is going to bother you for not using the "right" model, and lots of players just use the 40k tank models. Land speeders also work in 30k, just not any of the 40k fliers. Xenith
While technically the rhinos, predators and vindicators are not the correct model Technically, they are the correct model. The FW ones are "Deimos Pattern" while GW ones are "Mars Pattern". Both were in existence at the same time. Depends on what forge world your legion gets restocked from, I guess. Excessus
I like how not only Mars itself but the two moons Phobos & Deimos are used in the names from FW as well. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316662-horus-heresy-newbie/#findComment-4242067 Share on other sites
Xenith
If you want an army that can double up as both 30 and 40k, I'd go with ultramarines. They have access to the most stuff (in 40k) and the 30k stuff will probably translate to a better army in 40k than a wolf one would.
