That's right my friends. He wanted to become a God. From the very beginning. Always. It was always the goal. Godhood.

I really hope that's not the case. I like the Emperor as someone whose sole goal is to ensure human survival in a hostile galaxy at any cost, including being forced to writhe with agony for ten millenia just so his species can endure, not someone who will sacrifice everyone around him to become a god, like that Kane jerk from the Command & Conquer series.

The only sources we have for "The Emperor wants to be a god" come from the ruinous powers and those that listen to them (and, let's be fair, the ruinous powers are not the most trustworthy source of information). The only other view point is from older lore stating that he wishes to save mankind and help it transition to a fully psychic race. So, which is more believable? Older lore or warp denizens? I'm not going to be betting on the latter...

Several of the perpetuals talk about knowing the Emperor in a throw away sentence or two.  I like the idea that he and Malcador are the same person in some manner.  It kinda jives with how things are going but we don't know much about the war in the Webway right now.  So once Master of Mankind comes out we will probably get a few more concrete facts.

I'm not a fan of them being the same person. It takes away some of the grimness for me because it turns the Heresy into a victory, rather than a pyrrhic one.

Because in the Horus Heresy, no one is truly the victor, you may survive, but you will never win.

The chaos gods have an agenda of their own which goes completely against the goals of the emperor, I think we can safely discount them as a source for the emperor wanting to become a god.

The truth can also be a powerful weapon. The real problem is that Chaos doesn't have a good track record for it.

Don't read Vengeful Spirit.

One it is crap. Two, the setting takes a turn for the worse. Makes you want to cuddle Betrayer for being such a good book, but slap it for making such dross seem even worse by comparison.

The cake is a lie!

On a more serious note. About the big E being hitler (or not). I can't for the life of me remember the book it's in, but in one of the daemon codex's I think it was, it heavily implies hurler became one of the oldest daemon princes of khorne, so that pretty much rules him out of being the emperor

I think he was the true lord of the galaxy and that he made the emperor and his primarks.
I believe he was clever enough to to create the emperor because the world wouldn't follow a puny little man (if anyone can say that without a hulk impression then good for you!)

In The Sigillite audio drama we learn that there are vaults deep below The Palace containing artefacts from Malcador's "order". It seems he is the last member of the order of Sigillites. We learn little about them other than that they seem to have been shepherding mankind for a long time.

Malcador is clearly ancient but I don't believe he's a Perpetual, I think he's just a sufficiently powerful psyker to sustain himself.

The idea that he's the real Emperor using a psychic projection as a figurehead is an interesting one. I prefer for him to be the one man who is a friend of The Emperor rather than just a follower.

Or otherwise, the Emperor is merely a disillusion of Malcador's mind, sickened by the very psychic powers that have granted him such longevity and have calcified the mirage into true flesh...

On a more serious note, I think we have to wait for Master of Mankind before going too far with the wacky theories :-P

Lord Lucan = The Emperor.
