Emicus
That's Space Wolves propaganda lads. The true story is that the Leman Russ tanks came first, and they're so uterly awesome and badass when the Primarch of the Spacepuppies first saw them he was utterly awestruck. When he regained his senses he thought he could get a leg-up (think about that some more) on the other Primarchs and so he changed his name to emulate the baddassery of the Imperial Guards standard tank.Later of course he saw the Baneblades, but changing his name twice would be awkward - and to be fair Leman Russes are really cool anyway. Olis
The out-of-universe reason goes back to Rogue Trader when Russ himself was a mere human commander (General, maybe?) and the tank was named after him because he was supposed to be such a great leader. All the other stuff came much later. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316774-why-russ-tanks-are-so-named/#findComment-4243743 Share on other sites

Plasmablasts
If Russ found the STC, presumably that means that there were no Leman Russ tanks during Unification Wars? Olis
You'd be correct. That said, Russ was one of the earliest Primarchs found, iirc, so Leman Russ tanks could theoretically have turned up pretty early on in the GC.
