MasterRaath
I've only been playing 40k since the end of October but Ive almost got my starter amry painted. I originally went out and bought the DV set then traded the Chaos portion to my good buddy for a box labeled "Space Dorks". In it, was the space marine portion of Assault on Black Reach, 7 random tactical marines, most of a land speeder, about half of an attack bike, an old metal command squad, and a terminator captain. He also gave me a terminator Librarian which came from a different game, hes slightly taller than the other terms but, hey free. When I went to buy the codex the fellow at the store seemed very helpful, explaining that a dev squad and an assault squad would let me use the Lion's Blade. He also told me I would benefit from buying either a vet squad or upgrade sprue to have some bits to customise my plastic dudes. Being a sucker I bought both. Awesome. I went in to spend $58 on a codex and instead spent almost $200. His advice was mostly helpful but he did sell me an old dev squad with no grav weapons. Bummer. Heres my first finished tac squad: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151207_172912_zpsohom0kxr.jpg Next I painted up these guys: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151207_172921_zpsgkiirlbs.jpg The GW videos on youtube helped these guys look better than the first. Next I tried some terminators but wasnt really happy with them: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151207_173006_zpsov1wzdsi.jpg After those I did the dread: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151207_173136_zpsifhl89fd.jpg followed by some bikers: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151207_172939_zpsiyoaeljx.jpg again following along with Duncan Rhoades. Then it was time for the last tactical squad: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151207_173136_zpsifhl89fd.jpg Haha! My nerd running all the electronics messed up the pics, here's the bikes: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151207_173136_zpsifhl89fd.jpg and here's my assault squad: http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151009_221657_zpsl4c7k26n.jpg Thats about all I've finished so far. Thanks to Bredkooler for posting all this for me (even though you screwed it up) http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151127_102923_zpsbzoi6ie3.jpg Its photobuckets fault... uh huh... Knight Angels
Lots of marines. No vehicels? Heavy weapons? What is your playstyle? This is a nice looking core and just needs to be added with some other stuff. But that depends on your common enemys and playstyle. Isiah
Well he has some plasma cannons and a missile launcher. But I agree transports will give this building army a different dimension. But I think MasterRaath your best bet is to post an army list and get some feedback on that. Then at least you get some ideas on what you might need to purchase. [edit] Nice looking models so far. [/edit] Cheers I Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316891-raaths-army-advice-and-tips-welcome/#findComment-4246395 Share on other sites
Epher
I would agree with the good chaplain, a few vehicles would go a long way. Razorbacks are always useful but if you bought a land speeder you would be able to field a Ravenwing Attack Squad with your Lion's Blade. Crappy deal on the dev squad. I guess you can't return it once you open it? I am liking the looks of your army! Hard to believe that you just started painting in October. Great use of the robed vets as sargeants! Welcome to the Rock! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316891-raaths-army-advice-and-tips-welcome/#findComment-4246602 Share on other sites
Pigshead
Looking good so far. My only suggestion would be to maybe repaint the green on the robes of the sarg in the first pic with red or something. It's a personal thing really, and how I paint mine, so feel free to completely ignore me I would also like to add to the voices suggesting razorback, on paper they seem squishy, but I've found them to be a very reliable transport and heavy weapons platform (las cannon and twin linked plasma can turn a fairly light tank into a nasty threat with a decent punch). Maybe look into some black knights too, they are invaluable if you ask me, but that will lead you down the slippery slope of wanting to build your own librarian or chaplain on a bike... trust me, it's been an ongoing project of mine for some time. MasterRaath
I kinda cheat when painting, i spray green then just paint on the details. It still takes me FOREVER. Thanks Lucifer for cleaning up my messy posts, Ive only got my cell phone so it would only let us use so much script. As I said I do have MOST of a landspeeder, it along with the attack bike got pretty beat up in that box for god knows how many years. If you saw my buddys game room you'd understand, i think he's prepping for the apocolypse by storing 80 years worth of minis to paint Edit: (added here instead of another post) I also agree on the transports, tanks and more bikes, but my wife says I have to finish painting what I have before I buy anything else. When she gets our credit card statement and finds out Im already $300+ dollars deep into this I suspect I shall have some explaining to do as well... next time pay with cash... noted... Epher
Spending more than we should on this hobby seems to be keeping GW in business. I have been there myself. I haven't gotten the paint dependant purchasing restrictions yet. It would be good motivation to get my butt in gear. Either way, don't tell my wife about it. You should post some pics of your land speeder. I have lots of speeder bits laying around. If you have most of the main bits I could help you out. There may be others in the forum that may do the same. I would suggest privately messaging your address and not posting it in this thread. MasterRaath
From what I can tell its missing the antenna thing on the front, the little blast shield in front of the driver and the stand. They're all just details though so Im really not overly concerned with it. I've already sprayed it black so I just cant seem to get a decent picture but you can easily tell its a LS, you have to actually pick it up to notice the few missing pieces. Additionally, the local game store has one of the old RW battleforce boxes for $110 that he says has been there for 3 years now so he'll be happy to let me have it for the 25% off he had everything marked at for black friday. I will probably pick that up next time I go into town (and try to hide it until I finish everything else) But thanks for the offer! The 40k community is by and large a great group of folks very willing to help out a newcomer which is quite refreshing compared to some of the other gaming communities Ive been part of (looking at you M:tG and WoW) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/316891-raaths-army-advice-and-tips-welcome/#findComment-4247175 Share on other sites
MasterRaath
I just spent 40 minutes typing out my army list (phone remember) only to have it all disappear while i was trying to get this link from photobucket. http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151209_194818_zpsq9rp3ubp.jpg Im pretty upset with my phone and totally not typing it again right now. MasterRaath
http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz322/bredkooler/Mobile%20Uploads/20151114_211219_zpsbrgueehr.jpg Maybe just not so chatty this time. Demi-Co: Chapter Master with combi plas 2x 10 man Tac. One with Plasma Cannon plasma gun, other with missile launcher and flamer. 5 man tac with plasma cannon. Dev squad w/2 plasma cannons and a rhino (or chimera for now), assault squad w/ 3 plasma pistols. Then I got a RWAS w/ bare speeder 3x bikes with a plasmagun. DW Redemption Force: Level 2 lib with axe. 2x 5 man DW squad with assault cannon, one has a chainfist. Then i took another level 2 lib as a command or hq or whatever. Oh I had a dreadnaught in my demi-co. Multi melta and powerfist. Thats pretty close to every miniature I own. MasterRaath
I was given him after my recent tourney disaster. So Ive been keen to start slapping some paint on but rather intimidated. Glad I finally tried or I would have no idea what I am really capable of. Punk possum
Well looks to me like you are off to a Stella start a bit of shading and some highlights = super cool chaplain. I'm so glad that you scored this model from your tournament he is an outstanding mini and it shows that you were a super nice opponent that some one was willing to part with him after your game. Too often people forget that there are two people in a game of 40K and just want to throw some more cheese on the sandwich to ensure victory and thus miss the real victory of having a fun and engaging game with someone who just might become your new best friend.
