Classic BA conversion

Hail brothers! I'm venturing over from the Eternal Crusader to share a small project I'll be starting soon. I was sorting out some extra marine models I have and came across this guy

I was instantly reminded of this classic 40K image from the days of yore

And it got me thinking that although he's not exactly the same and is facing the other way, it would be a cool project to convert him up into a tribute of that iconic image. So I rifled through my bitz box and came up with this powerfist which will be perfect for the job.

Next up I'll need a bolter for him to shoot and I discovered I had an old school one of those. The only problem with it is whoever tried to drill the barrel did a terrible job and the hole is way off center.

So the question is should I go with this old school bolter or use a new modern one. As a third option I could try and rustle up a FW HH bolter but that will be much harder to come by.

Anyway, hope you like it and I'm off to hack a chunk of that guys arm off to fit the PF on!

Just in case postage takes to long, i did the following once when i messed up drilling a bolter. You can stuff the barrel full of liquid green stuff and not even try to be tidy, as you'll be able to file it down again later. To keep the round shape, use either super fine grit paper and twist it around the barrel, or use a regular flat file but rotate the gun constantly as you do it. I hadn't seen any 28mm miniature lathes yet!

Looks like you got a great plan for this mini. Looking forward to seeing it.

I was going to suggest green stuffing it too actually...

But I do have a FW Tigrus bolter you can have if that's any good? I think he would also look pretty cool with a storm bolter!

The Tigrus would be pretty cool, though I'd probably replace the mag with a sickle mag to more closely match the art. Good idea on the storm bolter, that could work too. I think technically that era bolters were the Umbra pattern?

Here are some mock ups of the various gun options I currently have. Also you'll see that I cut down his right arm to fit the powerfist on there.

Old school bolter

Modern (Godwyn) bolter

Storm bolter

Godwyn bolter looks too big IMO so ditch that right away.  Storm Bolter looks great but can't be taken by all Sergeants so reduces utility in case he'll be going around in different squads.  2nd Ed Boltgun looks perfect.

Whatever you do, make sure the power fist is rotated a bit more inward, the powe would look much more natural.

I think it's only VV that can't take them, but it doesn't matter anyway. I don't play BA and this model is going to be purely a display piece. Speaking of which, I'm thinking of mounting him on a 40mm and putting a dead ork under his feet or something cool like that.

Ok so I'll set to work on fixing the barrel of the 2nd ed bolter with some greenstuff.

So the attempt to fill the badly drilled barrel failed. The greenstuff was just not hard enough to hold against the plastic. So I sheared off the whole thing and cut a barrel from another bolter and plastic cemented it to the gun. Then I was able to drill that out perfectly.

The next thing I'm thinking of is what kind of base to put him on. I'm thinking something big, perhaps with some ruins like the one in the picture. I've also been contemplating using some orks and perhaps doing a large scenic base instead. If I kept it small and went with say 40mm I could simply have him stepping on an ork head or something. Thoughts?

I was also thinking of getting some cinematic effects from Armorcast for the muzzle flash

So here's the first mockup of what it could look like with an ork head for him to stand on. I'm thinking that it might be a bit too high so I could make a little hill for him to stand on. Thoughts?

Also found a vintage backpack in good shape so that will go perfect for the classic look
