Frostmourne
Hey all, After sitting on my current Ultramarine project for quite a while, and a lot more planned ahead, I, like most people probably have always struggled with Project Switching. This has always been annoying for me and my wallet and invariably sees projects not get completed. But after coming up with a decent plan, or 'Project Queue' for all my little side projects and big new army plans. It allows me to rationalise and say to myself 'No you don't need to buy all of those Imperial Fists, or choose your Traitor Legion, or start investing into Dark Angels early, as you know you will get round to it. Does anyone else do this? Or something similar? A queue to rationalise your future plans? Just FYI my plan is.. 1) Ultramarine big project 2) Mechanicum small project. Probably Praevian based 3) Dark Angels big project 4) Space Wolves small project 5) Imperial Fists small project. Based on Polux 6) Pick a Traitor Legion, and go huge. Any one else's? Flint13
Finish painting my World Eaters armored spearhead so I have at least a single fully painted army for gaming. Finish painting my Dark Mechanicus Cybernetica with an indentured Knight House so I have at least a single fully painted army for gaming. Finish painting my "How many demolisher cannons is too many?" Solar Auxilia so I have at least a single fully painted army for gaming. Finish painting my Cult Horde and Rogue Psyker coven so I have at least a single fully painted army for gaming. Finish painting my Word Bearers daemonhost so I have an ally for whichever of those I finish painting first :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317019-project-queue/#findComment-4249050 Share on other sites

CaptainStabby
I set up a kanban board to track the stuff I'm "actively" working on. Father Mehman
You always come up with great ideas, Frosty ! A project queue is just what I need for all this...stuff. Maybe I'll be able to stick to it. Hopefully we can include 40k stuff as well because I'm going to. Some AoS might make the list, too. No, that's a joke. Maybe. Hey, we're talking about hobby stuff so why not? It's not like I'm telling everyone who I'm working on. Alright, here goes in order: 0a- Death Guard ongoing Company project. Truthfully, I don't see this ending until I either get to Company strength or they quit making models ! 0b- Cleric Chapter ongoing project. Obviously that's my 40k DIY Chapter conveniently located in the Dark Angels' forum and my signature (shameless plug) . 1- Fluff project for my Death Guard "Aechops" Company (also found in my signature if you're curious). 2- Finish my two games set in the 30/40k universe. 3- Mechanicum addition for the Death Guard. I'll have to do some research on that aspect. 4- Random AoS stuff that shall not be named. 5- Pick a Loyalist Legion and focus on it. Bleh. That one leaves a bad taste in my mouth ! 6- Imperial Guard Regiment project. 7- Inquisition small Warband. 8- Complete my Cleric IA 9- Imperial Knight Freeblade Household project. Only three more to go! 10- Finish painting my 40k Iron Hands. There's no excuse at this point . I think that pretty much sums up my projects. Zebulon
This thread makes me feel a bit better about the list in my sig (well, I assume it is still there, I never see it anymore as I mostly access this site on my phone). Having done all those 40k Marines leaves me free to mostly focus on 30k now. Though I also have lots of unfinished projects. One might even say the majority of the list below could use "some" extra work at least... Ordo Machinum
Grey Legion (Pre-Unification era) VII Legion 'Imperial Fists' 405th Company (Pollux-centric) IV Legion 'Iron Warriors' 11th Grand Company (Golg-centric) Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii & Cult Mechanicus The Iron Hands Project - X Legion (30K) & Iron Hands Chapter (40K) This is going to be the new plan, the 'Go Big or Go Home' project, all of the bolters in one basket, etc... ...beginning in January 2016 ... Noserenda
My rational brain broke a while back so now the smallest unit i can plan is a platoon... As such ive got 3 major projects technically all on the go simultaneously, plus some side quests :)1. The original badboys, Alpha Legion 1st Armoured Battalion (2.5 companies down!)2. Iron Warriors XV Assault Group, featuring IV Legion, XVI Legion, Imperial Army, Ordo Reductor, House Gevaden knights, House Gevaden Ground Troops and Legio Mortis Elements)3. Need to get back into plogging with these guys...Plus Lankan Allegiance Great Crusade Rogue Humans, Alaitoc Eldar (Stripping and repainting old toys), Battle for Earth Era White Scars "Wyld Stallyns" Armoured (Pre FW army, need to reorganise or sell). Ishagu
Having too much to do can kill your motivation. Also, it's best to finish existing projects before starting new ones! Frostmourne
Do people also find that it's easier to stick to one project at a time. Or are people building up boys and bobs for different things as they go? OneOfOneThousand
I definitely find too many minis demotivating. I constantly battle with myself when thinking of taking new projects up and I've wasted time and money by rushing in too often. At the moment my big drive is 30k and I've got 4 legions on the go to various stages; XVII,XVIII,XIX and the XX (that sequencing was completely random though!) The overall plan is that I wanted 2 traitor and 2 loyalists for variety on both sides of the divide, though it does mean that because I am flitting between projects I have spent a huge amount of cash and aren't battle ready with anything past the XX at the moment. Must admit that is starting to wear on me a fair bit so I am tempted to throw myself on one of them for awhile. BaC has helped me a great deal with the accessibility of mass troops. The added challenge is that I also love the First, so heaven help me when book VI drops in Feb! But on the flip side of this, I need multiple projects to keep me going. The hardest part is knowing when to stop and putting sensible and realistic limits on yourself. Pretending I'd only do one legion would be folly, thinking I can do all 18 is clearly the same. Athrawes
Having too much to do can kill your motivation. Also, it's best to finish existing projects before starting new ones! Agreed, but it's different for different people. I used to be that way, with mountains of resin and plastic killing my enthusiasm. But Now, My current projects: LIghtning Bearers (Ongoing) Warlord Titan (ongoing) Thousand Sons (When I have the time/mood) While my LB are my first love, sometimes painting the same color all the time can wear you out, so I have the Titan and Thousand Sons to give me a taste of something different, just enough to freshen my pallet. If I could give one pice of advice, it would be to not have a huge to do pile for one single army (or for many separate armies) instead, expand your forces slowly, one miniature or squad at a time. Small projects mean, that you can finish them (have the satisfaction of finishing something), and move on to something different to keep your enthusiasm alive. OneOfOneThousand
I think that's very sage advice, and have really pulled back on the spending recently because of this fact! I want another BaC box really before they go out of stock but having it sitting in my office judging me will really hurt I think. zedmeister
I think we're all subject to project expansions. Too many nice things. Here's my 30k/40k project list (discounting other game systems and companies which will double my project list): - Project: Alpha Legion - Ongoing Got approximately 2,500 points and is my main active project with painting ongoing - Project: Mechanicum - Just starting out this one. Got a few bits painted and probably around 1500 points worth (though 750 points is tied up in a Warhound!) - Project: White Scars - On hold. I've lost my inspiration for a while, but I'm feeling a little motivated of late. Probably around 600 points - Project: Auxilia - Not really started. I've got a few Vehicles for these (Including a Forgeworld all resin Stormsword - No: 049!) but will start once I've wrapped up some of the others - Project: Corsairs - Eldar Corsairs. Always loved these and they are next on my "To-buy" list. Actually got a tri-system setup going: BFG (need more ships), AI (Have a full air wing) and 40k (the new book on the way) - Project: Elysians - Drop troops that will double as Imperial Militia. Got a few more purchases to get for these with approx 2000 points. - Project: Battlefleet - An ad-hoc mixture of Battlefleet Gothic fleets. I've pretty much got all the models I need for this, so it's just painting (mainly Chaos - now finished and Mechanicum - Ongoing) - Project: RT Guard. This is a long term project for getting my ancient Rogue Trader guard army fully painted. Only got a small fraction, but I'll be working on these for years. Will be used as Militia/Tyrants Legion/Imperial guard depending on the game. Then it's fresh on board the Heresy Train after I've decided on my Legion (85% sold on DG, but the new RoW may change this...) I've also got some Skitarii undercoated... Skalpynock
Rashbold you what My plan is such, in some kind of plausibility order: ⋅Write half a FW book worth of Brotherhood of the Lost fluff (ongoing) ⋅[30k]Finish assembling and painting my Skitarii infantry (count as Militia). I've bought them on the day they were released, and they've been laying on my desks ever since. (kinda-ongoing) ⋅Find money and not spend it on lab tools (highly unlikely to ever happen) ⋅[botL]Warbringers Vth principate, XIth sotnaya, with Warriors of Peace allied detachment (Gonna go with BaC for that) ⋅[30k]Get my Iron Warriors to at least minimum legal strength ⋅[30k]Forces of Unification using Shattered Legion rules. A quarter-squad per Legion. ⋅[30k]Expand Iron Warriors, get Iron Hands, Death Guard, and Ultramarine Nemesis comrades for them. Iron Bars
I love that flow chart. I've narrowed it down to: - Finnish ultramarines, 1500 points done > expand to 2500 - Shattered legions (everything not ultamarines goes here so I can paint what I want when I feel like it) - Make display board for both armies Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317019-project-queue/#findComment-4249341 Share on other sites
Corswain
Very, very slowly: -Night Lords -Dark Angels, lots and lots of Dark Angels -Terrain I also have some xenos mixed in there (just for my power armour to kill, I promise!) and have been slowly doing the complete character series. Lord Blackwood
I enjoy Having a shifting project plan because sometimes things will come up like an amazing deal on something for another project so you go pick that up. Its almost Better to have a Priorities list for your projects and try to complete them according to that ( atleast in my experience ) 30k Imperial Fists ( Proto Templars ) Approx 7 Thousand Points Priority Level High30k Questoris Knights Count : 4 Priority Level High30k Space Wolves Points Value Unknown Pending Book 7 Priority Level Mid30k World Eaters Just Starting / As Money Allows Priority Level Mid 40k Space Wolves ( Completed to Current Codex Playability 10k Points ) Priority LowImperial Knights Count : 7 Priority Low40k Black Templars ( Completed to Current Codex Playability 5k Points not inc Forgeworld) Priority LowSo finishing out my Imperial Fists 30k Legion stuff is pretty high up there as is getting more Forgeworld specific Knights of course just because those are the highest in priority dosent mean they trump really good deals on World Eaters stuff since thats a new project. Obviously since I build to play a lot of my priorities list is based on the books , if say a new space wolves sup for 40k came out and I needed X units to make good use of it , I would shift over to working on that. Also when the 30k wolves come out they will immediately go to priority one.
