Did you go from 25mm to 32mm bases?

Okay so I found some old posts on this but they were all asking mostly about what size comes with what box, and what's legal.

Just for the people who don't know: It is 100% legal to use 25mm bases with your infantry. And you can mix as much as you want. In fact it was quoted that the reason they made this move was purely for aesthetic reasons. The models are larger now (you ever put old Abaddon next to a new assault marine? It's almost comical. Khârn looks like a child with huge arms. lol)

Anyway back to the point.

There are pluses and minuses as I have units with both but I find I am at a cross roads. Aesthetically I hear both arguments. Some people like that the marine is... overtaking the base, larger than life, etc. Some people love the marine seems to just fit better. Personally I like the aesthetics because it gives me more opportunity to do something with the base. More room to personalize the model.

But the bad news is I think it's quite a bit worse in almost every game play scenario except for evading template coverage.

Things I have personally experienced:

- Deep striking is quite a bit riskier. Even a min sized squad of Vanguard has greater potential for disaster.

- Using "Rhino Wall" is pretty much impossible. Not only does the rhino only cover/hid about 3 marines, the new height causes their heads to poke over the hull.

- Terrain issues are something I did not foresee but they are at times quite annoying. Placement in 'man made' structures is really awkward in a lot of terrain. Placing them on a 'floor' or within a cramped space just doesn't work where perhaps you used to be able to conceal a full squad.

    - Walking in aisles with the models sometimes they actually do not fit at all.

- "Wobbly Model Syndrome": I find hill style or rocky terrain where you could get 10 marines in relatively fixed positions might now be only 5-6 models and the chance of them being placed at awkward angels is a lot higher.

So the negatives above are for gameplay, but to add to that I would like to say some of my storage trays/foam are completely unusable now. Especially for models with irregular weapons or poses/banners/swords/large guns, etc.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So those are the pluses and minuses as I have experienced them. But I find myself at a crossroad. The way I handled this was all special weapons and characters are on 32MM. Making them easier for me and my opponent to identify (you know the question we often get every game: "Which guy had the melta gun again?"

That being said, ALL my scouts (and similar sized model armies like Astra) are staying 25mm.

Some specialty units I have now gone completely 32mm, like my newly completed Vanguard squads.

So I'm almost finished all the tacticals I would ever need for my Ultramarines' Battle Company and I am seriously considering making the full switch over to 32mm. I can do it because I have the plastics to make the swap in probably a weekend's worth of work.

Now I want to know if you switched your entire army, a portion of you army, or none of your army. And why did you make this decision and do you have any regrets?

I'm in the camp that it's too much work to change my normal dudes to 32, I am (slowly) changing my PA characters for the looks (you are right, 32 looks way better!) but that is all. 25 is better on the table 99% of the time, everytime.

Yeah, no way am I rebasing my armies. That is a stupid amount of work to do for no real reason.

Heck if I buy a kit that comes with 32mm bases I may put them on 25mm just to keep consistency with the rest.

I could see doing future characters on the 32mm but not regular grunts.

I'm going with the 32mm base for my Iron Warriors & pretty much all Power Armour armies.  Already got 20 Iron Warriors rebase with a further 90 models that'll get rebase during the Christmas holidays.  End of the day they look cool in my view.

I don't game, so all those negatives are mute for me. I do intend on rebasing select models to 32mm for the looks, I've BaC, and the mkIV's look so nice on the 32mms.

Also, mildly related, is it coincidence that "True Scalers" we're using 30mm bases? Maybe, but I don't believe it. There was opportunity and demand, now GW has a supply.

Cheers,

Jono

I've not consciously done this - and knowing that I have far too many things on 25mm bases, I think it would be odd to change! That said, I may switch smaller armies, or indeed - new armies, to that format. I just can't imagine rebasing my Death Guard legion, especially with the number of resin bases I have spread out among them too.

All Power Armoured models from here out are on 32mm for me. They look...imposing. Like Prot said, Imperial Guard stays on 25mm. In fact, any human or human-like model will be on those same bases. I'm glad I've waited so long to start my Death Guard as the new bases really add some umph. The old way of having a foot off the base is gone- good riddance!

Now all there is to do is buy a few truckloads of 32mm to rebase my Iron Hands laugh.png!

My space wolves, dark angels and deathwatch are staying on 25mm as that's what they started on. Too much effort and too many bases needed to make the change! But, my ultramarines, blood angels and grey knights will be on 32mm bases as I prefer them.

In terms of gaming issues, this isn't a huge consideration to me as I only get to play 6-10 Times a year!

I had been basing my models on what they came with in the package. FW seems to still be sending 25mm in the mail. Is that still the case? I use mainly FW for Heresy stuff. About a month ago, I received several marks of armor, all with 25mm bases. The only 32mm bases that I have received so far are BaC.

I'm the opposite to quite a few people in here it seems; I'm sticking to 25mm just because I find that a bigger base makes the power armoured models look smaller by comparison (they look more hulking when they're spilling over the edges of the base!).

I refuse to rebase over 100 marines, but I will adjust going forward. My Crimson Tears 2nd Company will be finished up on 25 as will a couple of Deathwatch to round out a squad. The 4th Company and future Deathwatch marines all get 32mm because I like interesting bases and having that extra room opens up a whole range of possibilities without making it difficult to actually fit the damned marine on the base.

I'm currently making masters for casting up fresh 32mm bases for my pa models and the freed up bases will be used with my guard. Most are already on resin bases with a pin and superglue holding them on so a quick twist to break the superglue bond and they're base free so it's not much work doing them. ;)

Since the change to 32mm I've put all my new Marine sized models on them, but I haven't gone back to rebase my old ones. If I actually ever do that remains to be seen.

I've actually also used 32's for Genestealers, Tau Stealth Suits (although I believe they subsequently repacked those with 32's anyway) and will be doing for Daemons as well. They do look a LOT better on the bigger bases in my opinion, as do the 40mm>50mm changes (Crisis Suits, Tyranid Warriors).

I rebased all mine. I tried chopping around the feet but that took time and I was very wary of damaging the model itself. So I just started clipping the edges off the bases, leaving the model stuck to a flat surface, gluing that to the 32 mm base and then using texture paint to blend the edges in. It works pretty well for a quick process, and the Marines look way more imposing on bigger bases.

I wasnt going to, but then i did one or two, and i liked it.

I like the extra detail i can put on the base, and still fit a marine. That and having them hulk over a guardsman a little more without true scaling was worth it.

A pain in the arse to do, though. If more of my models were finished, i probably wouldn't have.

I've also stuck my Ork Nobz on 32's. They look much better. 25's were too small for them.
