Sons of the Nine

Index Astartes: Sacred Brethren

‘The Imperium must consolidate its knowledge and strength.
It must bolster its intelligence with power to have
the strength to make the hard decisions and it
must guide its might with understanding of when
and where to strike, or else it will have its thinking
done by cowards and its fighting done by fools.’
- Captain Raesar Sejanus

The Sacred Brethren are a Chapter dedicated to tactical innovation and adaption. The battlefield is an ever evolving place and by following the shining example of each of the nine Primarchs the Sacred Brethren hope to master it in the name of the Emperor.

The Chapter that would become the Sacred Brethren was created during the Sentinel Founding of the 37th Millennium. This series of Foundings was set to rebuild the Astartes strength that had been whittled down through millennia of conflict. The Brethren themselves were to help watch over the troubled regions of the vast Ultima Segmentum.

To guide their maturation and lead them on the first steps of defending mankind was the task of Gabriel Hydronus, 1st Captain of the Genesis Chapter. The Genesis Chapter had performed admirably over the ages and defended the Imperium with all the efficiency and success of their glorious forebears, the Ultramarines. Because of this honourable standing and exemplary battle-record the Genesis Chapter were selected to mentor this new-found force, apparent successors to their own proud legacy. Along with a handful of veterans and specialists, Hydronus was to shape the new Chapter as he saw fit and was determined to mould them as true sons of Guilliman by instilling his new charges with devout faith in the Codex Astartes. The Genesis Chapter had become notorious for its dogmatic adherence to the Codex; Hydronus was true to his Chapter and wished these successors to hold true to the same tenets that had brought the Genesis Chapter honour and glory for nearly seven thousand years. For many decades the new Chapter would shadow the Genesis Chapter and act as a supporting detachment; this was so that its warriors could gain the experience they needed before they deployed as an independent force. They worked well with the Codex-adherent Genesis Chapter and learnt many of the tactics and strategies penned by Guilliman himself.

Hydronus was a zealous follower of Guilliman and had personally undertaken over a dozen pilgrimages to Macragge to gaze upon his Primarch. He would instil this form of hero-worship in the Battle-Brothers of this new Chapter; they would revere Guilliman as a brilliant tactician and leader second only to the Emperor. Each Battle-Brother would also have to undertake a pilgrimage to Macragge as Hydronus and many of the Genesis veterans had done. This fanaticism would lead to the Chapter’s new title; the Sacred Brethren.
‘Remember Guilliman, lauded tactician of the Primarchs. His sons were trained as such that their training
became bloodless battles and their battles as bloody drills. The efficiency of such training and discipline
is why the Codex Astartes should be recognised as what it is; a martial guide to victory.’
- Chapter Master Gabriel Hydronus, during his address to the newly founded Sacred Brethren.

Once the Chapter was ready to mobilise, Chapter Master Hydronus took them out across the Ultima Segmentum to their appointed vigil. Before the century was over one of their first, and some would say most historically defining, tests would come on the world of Constella.

Constella
Constella was a Hive World which provided Imperial Commanders a vital, heavily-defended outpost against the Orks of Charadon. However, Constella had recently become afflicted with mass civil unrest forcing the Planetary Governor to plea for aid. Hydronus was determined that the Sacred Brethren would answer, a thousand Astartes with their full complement of armour and gunships would make a powerful impression on the unruly populace, thereby paving the way for a peaceful solution. Once the Sacred Brethren deployed however, they were immediately attacked by hit-and-run cultist squads. Diplomacy was no longer a viable solution, only war and so the Chapter Master began setting his elite force against the cultists’ base of operations. This was the perfect opportunity for his Brothers to gain vital experience as an independent Chapter while fighting against a foe that would not test the Brethren too much and so allow them to train and grow.

That was not the case; after a few months all noticed a change in cultist operations, not only that but they were rapidly being reinforced and reequipped with superior weaponry. Warriors from the Sacred Brethren now began to fall under expertly located ambushes and traps. The cultists now seemed to know a great deal of how the Chapter would operate and would act in order to counter it. The Chapter Master realised something else was at play in the background, something that would soon rear its many ugly, tainted heads; the Hydra of the Alpha Legion.

The cultists were backed by the Traitor Legion; their expertise and equipment gifted to them by the veterans of the Heresy. Soon the Alpha Legion themselves began to appear on the battlefield, a development that Chapter Command initially welcomed as a chance to slay the hydra with a thrust to the heart. However as with every phase of the conflict so far, this did not go to plan either. The operation that was predicted to end within a month was now stretching into a year-long campaign, with estimates of its end only growing longer. The commanders of the Brethren now found their new Chapter being picked apart by the thousand small encounters the Alpha Legion instigated. No pitched-battles, no obvious targets or bases, they were denied a clear way to eliminate the treacherous enemy. Hydronus pored through his knowledge of the Codex Astartes and found the treatises Guilliman had penned to deal with such insurgency, but the Alpha Legionnaires were already countering them. It seemed they held as much intricate knowledge of the Primarch’s teachings as he did and then used them to systematically cut his force apart. More and more of the local population began to side with the traitors, mobs of civilians pouring down the Hives’ avenues to assault their erstwhile defenders. Battle-Brothers began to die in greater numbers; a squad lost in the cleansing of the Piretouse Outpost, half a Company lost in the defence of Hive Galar’s lower levels, the casualties began to mount.

The Serpents Strike

To the last.
A bolter round clipped his shoulder pad, he roared his
defiance and fired with all the rage he had. Smoke
drifted over their position; fires from other battles, other
last stands.
‘We will not break!’ Sergeant Corbulo roared. He didn’t
know how many were left.
An explosion ripped apart the left flank, one Brother flung
back into the dirt, the limp body crashing to the floor with

a grim certainty.
Shapes loomed out of the smoke, their armour chipped
and cracked in a dozen places, blood splattered over the
colours of their Chapter. His soldiers, his Astartes, his
Brothers. More rounds punched through the air, his

brothers fired back. Their battered frames were held up

with nothing short of will power alone. Defiance. It is what

Space Marines were renowned for. Let them come.
‘The Traitors are retreating!’ a voice cried out, he watched
as the green and blue forms of the Alpha Legion fell back,
cowards. Behind him he saw the reason; a squad of

Sacred Brethren were reinforcing their position, the red

and grey heraldry a welcome sight.
‘Hail Brothers!’ he called, his squad began to relax after
such a fierce fire-fight, he went to greet the new arrivals.
Before he could get close, a bolt round punched through

his gorget. Disbelief struck him like a hammer blow. The

new squad strode past him, unloading their bolters into

the beleaguered Brethren. As they passed, he heard

them mutter in twisted tongues.
‘Hydra Dominatus’

Some of the veterans amongst the Chapter began to question the reliance on the Codex that they were ordered to adhere to. Captain Varrik Regis and Chaplain Raphen Serrat both voiced their concerns, suggesting other deployment patterns and protocols, both were ignored by Hydronus and the other Genesis veterans whose worship of Guilliman was too ingrained to consider such things. Hydronus was a consummate commander however; he began redeploying his forces according to the tenets of the Codex and consolidated his resources; attempting to strengthen his defences. It was a mark of shame that the invading force of space marines was now fighting a defensive campaign, one that irked the Chapter greatly; they longed to strike out at the enemy but were denied a target, instead chasing shadows and finding their own dead when they turned back. The Alpha Legion was waiting everywhere and began to strike heavier blows, now showing themselves in greater numbers and with previously hidden armoured convoys. With these larger targets the Sacred Brethren could now begin to land lethal strikes against their adversaries, but after two years of punishing guerrilla warfare they now lacked the strength to deliver a substantial blow.

In the end Hydronus was to meet his end on the soil of Constella; the deceitful tactics of repainting their armour allowing the Alpha Legion to get close to many of the Chapter’s commanders in the heat of battle, including Gabriel Hydronus.

With Chapter command crippled by their losses, it fell to Captain Regis to take control. The Captain was forced to tactically withdraw from the planet, taking heavy casualties as his Chapter undertook what was effectively a retreat. Once in orbit, Regis declared the planet lost to heresy and unleashed the might of his fleet upon its surface, the Hives reduced to rubble and ash. The Inquisition were alerted and petitioned for an Exterminatus Order on the planet to ensure a total cleanse.

A New Path
After that humiliating defeat, the newly inaugurated Chapter Master Varrik Regis realised that the Chapter had been outmanoeuvred and systemically butchered because of Hydronus’ sole reliance on the Codex; his moves had been predictable and countered upon inception. Many of the Genesis Chapter veterans who had joined Regis to mentor this Chapter were dead; his true brothers now lay on the cold ground of Constella. Regis came to the conclusion that he simply did not know enough and so began scouring through the Codex in search of an answer; something others had missed or misinterpreted. But following the rigid view of the Codex outlined by his predecessors however, did not yield anything new and so he started researching all the texts he could find in regards to his Primarch’s reactions to such an insidious threat. This is when he found an ancient report, brought to light by an Inquisitor Kravin at an Inquisitorial Conclave, detailing the climactic battle between Rouboute Guilliman and Alpharius on the planet of Eskrador. In the report Regis realised that Guilliman had broken his own teachings in order to prevent the methodical destruction of the Ultramarines. Regis could do the same. The modern-day Ultramarines had shown moments of innovation and initiative rather than sole reliance on their primogenitor’s Codex Astartes, maybe this was a better way than the Genesis Chapter’s dogmatic adherence. The Codex Astartes was an incredibly expansive tome; penned by Guilliman and then added to by commanders throughout history, but it still did not cover every situation, no single text could. There were still strategies and tactics out there that would never occur to the rigidly Codex-compliant Genesis Chapter, and maybe one of these methods would have saved the Sacred Brethren on Constella. He vowed to learn all there was to know about an opponent and study how the Legions of old waged war in their individual ways. He would use his newly acquired knowledge to outwit, outmanoeuvre and outgun his enemies. He would use tactics that Astartes were not expected to use, his forces would flow around the battlefield, always one step ahead. The shame of Constella would not be repeated, no-one would make fools of the Sacred Brethren again.

After many years of this new ethos, the newly appointed Master of Sanctity Raphen Serrat came to believe on a personal level that while Guilliman was the greatest of the Primarchs, the other mighty Primarchs were still Sons of the Emperor and believed them worthy of reverence and respect. This uniform veneration was to spread throughout his Chapter, and with the help of the few members of the Reclusiam that survived he ensured that this belief was understood and accepted at every level. Each of the Primarchs had their own way of war, each their own stratagems and conduct. Each of these methods were valid in their own way and so Serrat came to see that each Primarch was a truly venerable commander, Guilliman may have penned his Codex Astartes and been lauded as a tactical genius but did that mean the unfettered savagery of Leman Russ’ Space Wolves was any less effective? Did it mean that the Salamanders’ more pragmatic and cautious approach was not worthy of consideration? For Chapter Master Regis, Serrat had opened a whole universe of alternate thinking and interchangeable tactics and he was determined that his Chapter would use them all.

After the devastating losses accrued on Constella another discovery was made; the geneseed of the Sacred Brethren was not descended from the Genesis Chapter. There were too many differences in the genetic markers for this discrepancy to be due to chance mutation, this was the seed of a different source. Regis was distraught to learn that these were not his actual brothers he had led into battle, but they were his Chapter. He would not abandon them. He was tempted to inform his parent Chapter of the mistake the Mechanicus must have made, but that meant bringing to light how the information had been discovered and in all likelihood require contact with his parent Chapter. Shame; it was this emotion that prevented the Chapter Master from announcing his concerns; the shame of Constella was still so raw and fresh that it arrested his thoughts on the matter and the epiphanies that he had recently been through had weakened his dogmatic loyalty to his former Chapter. Instead he sought aid solely from the Mechanicus, who provided the geneseed essential to rebuilding his new Chapter. The loss of the Brethren’s link to Guilliman had fitted neatly into place with their new views on the Primarchs as a pantheon; they no longer had ties to any single Primarch.

This change in character and tradition would pave the way the Sacred Brethren would conduct themselves for millennia. The ability to adapt, innovate and think outside the normal strictures would come to stand for how the Sacred Brethren waged war in the name of the Emperor and all his beloved Primarchs.

At the dawn of the 41st Millennium the galaxy was in the throes of endless war, with all signs indicating the frequency and severity of conflict would only continue to worsen. The Sacred Brethren had now used the examples set by all nine of the loyalist Primarchs to fight endlessly for millennia from their homeworld of Aurus in the Apophis System, fighting with all the tactile wit that their long-departed and revered Chapter Master Varrik Regis had demanded of them. The trials of the 41st Millennium would become the greatest test for many forces throughout the galaxy; the Sacred Brethren were no exception.

Indeed during the incessant wars of the 41st Millenium the Sacred Brethren would have to wage war against the myriad of foes that stand before the Imperium; rooting out the Eldar on Ekoh Prime, halting Waaagh! Ripjaw on Rixus IV, evacuating Varedia before the horrors of Hive Fleet Leviathan laid claim to it, and at every turn fighting the vile servants of Chaos.

Yet there is a greater threat still; a chaotic uprising known as the Crusade of the Emperor Reborn has some hard truths for the Chapter, truths that may tear the Chapter apart in a clash of loyalties. Only time will tell if the heroes of the Chapter have the strength to weather the storm.

The Chapter has made its home on the planet of Aurus, located in the Ultima Segmentum. Aurus lies within the Apophis system and is a frequent victim to xenos invasions, be they brutish ork assaults or insidious eldar raids. Determined to fulfil their role as defenders of mankind, the Sacred Brethren have established themselves here in order to act as a bulwark against these xenos incursions.

The planet of Aurus itself has a moderate climate, with icier regions towards the poles. Aurus was a Civilised World, with a large number of cities and towns that are spread throughout the landscape. Due to numerous invasions from xenos and rebellious neighbours alike however, it has slowly transformed into a Fortress world with vast and disciplined Imperial Guard Regiments having arisen from its people, many of these Regiments having earned hard-won experience from these past wars. The cities and towns have all eventually been converted into fortresses and bastions, ready to defend their people in times of war. The Aurian Tactical Regiments now work in concert with their new lords, completely cooperative in exchange for the protection of their homes. When the Chapter deploys on a campaign the Aurian Tactical will often provide all the armour and support the Sacred Brethren will require. There are many academics on Aurus, all seeking new knowledge in a range of things, many of whom are dedicated to finding weaknesses in the various xenos species that have attempted to subjugate them in the past. The Sacred Brethren have only encouraged this broad spectrum of learning, and incorporate many new discoveries into their own extensive Librarius. The Chapter itself, although technically the ruling caste, has taken a hands-off approach to governing the people and mostly keep within the walls of their mighty fortress-monastery, Sanctum, which lies in the Rensus mountain range. Instead the Planetary Governor, residing within the Palatium, directs the affairs of the planet.

Thalgrad is an Adeptus Mechanicus Forge World and produces the vast majority of arms and armour for the Imperial forces within the Sector, including the Sacred Brethren. Close ties have been established between the Chapter’s Techmarines and the Adepts who run the manufactorums of Thalgrad. Many of the Chapter’s equipment, vehicles and ships can be traced back to Thalgrad forges, and many are sent back here for repairs where the facilities are more advanced than in the Chapter’s armoury. Thalgrad’s orbit lies further out than that of Aurus and so has often borne the brunt of the larger past invasions; these larger fleets tend to translate into the system by appearing on the peripheries where it is unlikely they will accidentally emerge too close to the star. Many wars have been bitterly fought amidst the industry of Thalgrad, many more halted in the void around its orbit. As a result of the formidable defences of the planet, an artificial asteroid belt has developed, forming a defensive ring around Thalgrad’s orbit. These are not balls of rock though; instead it is a graveyard of enemy ships rent open and broken apart by the Adeptus Mechanicus, and has come to be known as The Halo of the Omnissiah.

Although the Sacred Brethren are situated on Aurus, they recruit from another planet within the Apophis system; Sokar. A feral world with a hot, arid climate, Sokar’s closer proximity to the Apophis star has led most of the planet’s surface to become dominated by vast plains criss-crossed with small rivers or barren wasteland. The few areas that are inhabitable are usually on the edges of the great lakes or miniature oceans where life can grow in more abundance. The wildlife here is not hospitable to man and a variety of predators roam the landscape, from voracious Carnosaurs and hulking Drotans to the more sinister Ves, meaning the people here have had to learn to either fight or die. Orks can also be found here; warring with the local population, although they seem to be stuck in a feral state. The Orks are a result of past xenos invasions breaking upon the aegis of Aurus and Thalgrad; only a few ships ever make it to Sokar. The rarity of these ships however has not stopped the spores of the greenskins taking hold, particularly in the Haleiran Caverns; huge underground caves once carved out by a mighty river now reduced to a stream. The people here are hardy and aggressive; with many aspiring leaders proving themselves through conquest. The warring factions of the Thousand Lands and their battles with the feral orks have bred a race well suited to the Chapter’s needs.

When recruiting Aspirants for the Chapter, the Sacred Brethren are loathe to encourage these tribes to kill each other and instead often provoke conflict between these factions and the Haleiran Orks. After the internecine wars of the Thousand Lands the Sacred Brethren take those who not only showed strength in body but also in mind; for a battle-brother must be able to outthink his enemies as much as he can overpower them. These Aspirants are then set a trial; to kill one of the many Ork warbands. There is no way any single Aspirant would be able to slay the entirety of such beasts single handed, so they must work together and formulate a strategy that would give them the chance they need to slay monsters often two or three times their size. Once the survivors of such a trial are taken back to Sanctum they will be tested again; their mental strength and agility will be tested and there are many who crack under the pressures applied to their minds and fall into madness. Those who fail this final test are given over to the Armoury where they will become servitors, giving them another way to serve the Chapter.

gallery_26_6416_2731.gif

Since the defeat on Constella the Chapter has adopted the practice of using all sources of tactical knowledge available to them, even military texts not designed for Astartes operations, to better understand the possibilities that lay before them and to better grasp how their enemy will think. The Sacred Brethren have forsaken the Genesis Chapter’s method of war; strict adherence to the Codex Astartes is no longer an operational mandate and instead they look to the Ultramarines and their example in how the Codex is interpreted. The Ultramarines have taken a more relaxed approach to the text and will use their own judgement and creativity when required, to a point; they still will not willingly breach the teachings of the Codex Astrates but they are more open to the interpretation of Guilliman’s tome. For this reason the Sacred Brethren emulate the Ultramarines’ ‘jack of all trades’ ethos, however they have expanded their way of thinking to include the teachings of the other Primarchs as well, making them a very versatile Chapter.

‘Look to our Brothers; the Hawk Lords eschew the
teachings of the Codex to further hone their
dominance of the skies. The Aurora Chapter have
forsaken this generalisation for specialisation and
mastered the use of an armoured spear, mounting
the fiercest armoured assaults known to the Ultima
Segmentum. We should not singly shackle
ourselves to the Codex any longer. Free your minds
and crush the enemies of the Immortal Emperor
with the unforeseen strike!’
-Chapter Master Regis, on the eve of the Withandu Campaign

Preparation, Innovation and Initiative are all vital keywords that define how the Chapter performs on the battlefield and are the cornerstones to the Sacred Brethren’s way of war. There is a myriad of ways to defeat a foe, some better than others, and it is the duty of the battlefield commanders to discern the most effective method, whether this requires the use of high altitude jump pack drops or cunning and stealth, a battle of attrition or a divide and conquer strategy. The Legions claimed worlds for the Emperor in different manners, each was valid in its own right and each had advantages and disadvantages to offer to a commander. The Chapter still utilise the Codex Astartes for to simply ignore its vast collection of knowledge would be foolish in the extreme, however the Codex did not have all the answers, no single text does, and an open mind can lead to new roads to victory.
Because of the Chapter’s close relations with the Aurian Tactical Regiments, the commanders of the Sacred Brethren have made special use of certain texts, such as the renowned Tactica Imperium, in order to better understand how to best apply the Hammer of the Emperor. This has further broadened the Chapter’s view on what tactics are possible and how a fight may be conducted. The Chapter will often research the teachings and strategic methods of their allies to better understand them and so utilise them more effectively.

gallery_26_6416_1196.gif

The Sacred Brethren still follow the Codex Astartes when it comes to the organisation of their Chapter; the battle-brothers are divided into ten Companies along with a Reclusiam, Armoury, Apothecarion and Librarius which form the different support elements that keep the Chapter operational.

The Tenth Company as well as the Ninth Devastator Reserve and Eighth Assault Reserve Companies rarely deploy independently or in their entirety. Due to the specialised nature and relatively inexperienced battle-brothers that make up these Companies it would be tactically unsound to do so. Instead, squads are assigned to the Battle-Companies as additional support in times of larger campaigns.

‘You can’t be serious! This world is on the verge of being overthrown and all you send to aid is ten
spaces marines! Ten?!’
-Planetary Governor Bragan Himlock, prior to the complete pacification of Tartatia Secundus

The Reserve Tactical Companies are also not deployed in their entirety, but nor do they assign their squads to support the Battle-Companies; instead they take on another role. The Sacred Brethren are petitioned for aid from a multitude of sources; a plea from a Planetary Governor to help crush a growing rebellion, a petition from a Naval Admiral regarding the encroaching Eldar fleet in his Sector, the begging of the last astropath on a world consumed by the touch of Chaos, these are all examples of the situations that the Chapter must, if able, allocate forces to and restore the rule of the Imperium and the Emperor. Not all situations warrant a full Company; a hundred armoured Astartes is a force to be truly reckoned with. Nor would it be appropriate to disassemble the Battle-Companies into smaller forces, especially when they are required to face more serious threats. To overcome this, the Tactical Reserve Companies take on the lesser petitions for aid, sending a single squad, or occasionally a number of squads under the command of a Veteran Sergeant, to deal with an issue not worthy of a Company. Here the Battle-Brothers will gain vital experience and learn to fully integrate themselves into squad-based doctrines.

Once a battle-brother reaches the Battle-Companies they will operate as part of a Company that functions and deploys as a whole. The Battle-Companies are used to combat the dire threats that face the Imperium; the Ork Waaaagh!s, the Chaos uprisings, the Tyranid Hive Fleets. These are all threats that require a higher magnitude of force than a few squads from the Reserve Companies can deliver. The Battle-Brothers in these Companies come to understand how to operate in terms of a Company; understanding there are multiple actions that will be undertaken, and the bigger picture that the completion of these goals relate to.

The First Company is often organised in a similar manner to the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Companies; squads are assigned to support the Battle-Companies or occasionally to help guide a Tactical Reserve squad. The First Company is rarely ever deployed as a complete force; however when it is then the culminated skill and experience of these veterans is a thing to behold.

Remis, Master Scout
One of the fabled heroes of the Chapter’s history
is Remis, once Captain of the 10th Scout Company.
His skills in guerrilla warfare, reconnaissance and
stealth were widely renowned and forever immortalised
in his tome, the Tacet Venator. For centuries Remis
passed down his knowledge on all things that Scouts
must know, and the depth and expertise of his
knowledge has led many to believe that Remis is solid
evidence of the Chapter’s connection to the Raven Guard
Primarch, Corax.

The geneseed of the Sacred Brethen is pure and untainted. Upon its inception it was declared that the Brethren were of Guilliman stock; successors to the Genesis Chapter thus making them ultimate descendants of the glorious Ultramarines. After the defeat on Constella, the Apothecaries of the Chapter discovered that this was a lie; the geneseed of their mentors, the Genesis Chapter, was radically different to their own, more so than chance mutations would warrant. They petitioned the Adeptus Mechanicus for more information and documentation but were blocked at every turn by the crippling layers of bureaucracy.
Those who do communicate with the Chapter remain adamant that they bear the geneseed of Rouboute Guilliman. The Chapter has ignored these repeated claims and so has set out to discover to whom they owe their heritage. This has been done independently as the skills and knowledge of the Mechanicus is refused to them. So far, they have not determined whose legacy runs through their veins, but they have been known to expend vast amounts of Chapter resources in their attempts to track down their Primarch.

‘May Sanguinius keep my soul, that I may
be noble in the face of darkness

May Manus steel my hearts, that I may have
the resolve to do what is needed

May Russ fire my blood, that I may deliver
due vengeance to my enemies

May the Khan drive me onwards, that I may
be ever swift in my duties

May Corax guide my aim, that I may strike
where the foe is weakest

May Vulkan forge my bonds , that I may
never forget those I fight for

May the Lion embolden my pride, that I may
stand tall with honour

May Dorn strengthen my will, that I may stand
to the last

May Guilliman hone my mind, that I may
always find victory.’
- The Paragon Litany, a common recital before battle

In the early years of the Chapter’s existence Rouboute Guilliman was solely venerated as their primogenitor, in a way very similar to their supposed parent Chapter, the Genesis Chapter. During this time they followed Guilliman’s tenets to the letter, instilling his wisdom in all they did. Guilliman was seen with such high esteem that only the Emperor Himself was held in a similar reverence.

After the defeat at Constella and the reforms that Regis himself put into place, the Chapter began to divide its spiritual devotion amongst all of the Emperor’s Sons; enforced by the Chaplains of the Reclusiam all Battle-Brothers would cease in seeing Guilliman as the sole Son worthy of worship.

The Sacred Brethren now venerate all nine of the loyalist Primarchs. Each of the Emperor’s Sons is glorious in their own way and as such all deserve to hold the highest honour and respect that each Battle-Brother can give. Many among the Sacred Brethren will beseech the Primarchs in times of need, often calling upon the charisma of Sanguinius, the implacability of Ferrus Manus or the cunning of Corax in order to solve a particular problem. The Primarchs are viewed as both the very real Sons of the Emperor and also as a pantheon of paragons who may guide the Chapter through troublesome times.

The lack of their own clear lineage has only expounded this further; since the discovery that Guilliman is not their Primogenitor, the possibility that their heritage comes from any of these mighty gods of war has led to a more devoted reverence for all the Primarchs. Guilliman is still given the veneration he deserves; in line with the other honoured Sons, but the raw hope that one of the other Primarchs may be their link to the Emperor has caused favouritism amongst the younger Battle-Brothers. As a result, small cults can be found; groups of Brothers who deeply wish to bear the legacy of a certain Primarch. These Brothers will often hold the relevant First Founding Chapter in high esteem and try to emulate their ways both on and off the battlefield. These cults are deliberately kept small; for the Chaplains of the Reclusiam brook no idolisation of a single Primarch. To do so would divide loyalty away from the Emperor, an act which once resulted in thousands of the Legion Astartes following their treacherous Primarchs to damnation.

gallery_26_6416_9939.gif

“Until the Nine say I can die!”

A paradoxical phrase, as even if any of the nine Primarchs were able to grant such a thing, they would not. The Battle-Brother taking this oath has then pledged himself to fight until he hears a granting permission that will never come.

Each Company and HQ element also has a unique individual motto.

While these pictures are cool, I'd recommend putting most of them in spoiler tags, to avoid drowning out the main part of your article.

Anyway, I haven't got through the whole article yet (barely half way through the Homeworld section), but for the moment it's an interesting read, and I really can't find any points of contention, which is rare for a new index like this.

One thing that I am slightly surprised about is why Regis doesn't warn the mechanicum about how they messed up: it's sure to come up at some point, so may as well make sure he's not in reality leading a traitor warband...

Anyways, keep up the good work !

Thanks for the tip on the pictures Thorn, I've hidden them now so it's less distracting thumbsup.gif

I'm glad you like it so far, the geneseed bit is further discussed later on, but let me know if it still seems weak. It's the remains of a concept that brought the idea of this Chapter into existence but I didn't feel would be any good for their character as it developed.

Thank again happy.png
