55th Company Thousand Sons

"All is Dust. I think Ahriman once said those words. I’m not entirely sure to be honest. I never had much time for the man, despite his rank. Nonetheless, those words come back to me now more than ever.

Prospero is gone, its great libraries burned, our Primarch and Legion missing. Russ’ wolves are at our heels and the galaxy is in rebellion. Why? Why is this happening? I do not doubt that the Crimson King knew, but he is lost to us now. The Imperium we worked so long and hard to forge is tearing itself apart around us and we are considered traitors and renegades. Our only hope is to join Horus' cause.

I pray history records that we have made the right choice."

Alto Damokai, Preator-Librarian of the Thousand Sons, 55th Company, 6th Fellowship. - Extract from writings recovered from the wreckage of the ‘Kathopthek’ light cruiser in the Sol System after the Siege of Terra.

After years of planning and messing around with test schemes, I've decided to finally take the plunge and start my Thousand Sons army. This desire was partially stirred up by the Betrayal at Calth box (which gives me the basis of my planned army in one handy purchase), but also by the fact that Forge World have just hinted that their Thousand Sons upgrade kits are finally arriving in the near future, saving me from getting disheartened by my terrible freehand skills.

This will be the rough list I'll be following (subject to change as the whim takes me). Full fluff for them will come as each unit is completed:

Legion Trait: Stubborn

Preator-Librarian Alto Damokai - Master-Crafted Paragon Blade, Iron Halo, Archeotech Pistol, Pride of the Legion

Librarian Kal Kalophik - Lv 2 Divination, Catapractii Armour, Force Axe, Lumiferous Resonator

Contemptor Talon

Ancient Typhos - Kheres Assault Cannon and CCW

Ancient Ankush with Multi-Melta and CCW with Graviton Gun

Ancient Dimai - Contemptor Mortis with Twin Kheres Assault Cannons

Unbound Squad Ankhos - 5 x Destroyers, Missile Launcher with Rads,Seargent Hallas has Power Fist and two Phosphex Bombs

Pavoni Detachment - 3 x Apothecaries with Auguries

Tactical Squad Arathii - 15 x Tactical Marines, Vexilla, Seargent Arrash has a Power Fist

Veteran Squad Nekheb - 9 x Veterans, Vexilla, 4 x Power Weapons, 1 x Meltagun, Snipers, Sergeant Mors has a Thunder Hammer

Cataphractii Squad Lihst - 7 x Cataphractii, 5 x Power Fists, 3 x Power Weapons, 4 x Volkite Chargers (Psychic powers), 1 x Reaper Autocannon, Sergeant has Grenade Harness

Pyrea Destructor Squad Elkab - 5 x Heavy Support Marines with Volkite Culverins, Sergeant Lyos has Augury

This gives me a good solid goal in mind when building my army, with a strong narrative around it (more details soon). Obviously this will change slightly when they get their rules and unique models, but it's a good start.

Having picked up the B@C box last week and had my Bits and Kits order arrive today, I'm ready to go. My FW order can wait until the Thousand Sons stuff is out, so I can avoid double shipping costs.

I decided to start with the relatively boring Tactical Squad Arrathii, mostly so I can get used to building and painting Thousand Sons before jumping in on the more interesting stuff.

After a few hours of painting, I had a grand total of one model painted to this stage:

Hopefully I'll pick up the pace a bit as I get used to the method. The head will come later once I convert it and the bone-coloured shoulder pad needs finishing, but I'm quite liking how he's turned out so far.

I realised too late that his right shoulder pad should have been left off ready to receive a FW one when it's released, but never mind. I'll find a way round it somehow.

This is what the rest of my week looks like:

I'm aiming to get at least half the squad to the same stage as the first model, then I can start on the helmets. smile.png

(Ps. let me know if the picture size is ok. It's always hard to tell from my little netbook)

Picture size looks fine to me!

Your guys are looking pretty neat. I'll also be glad when they get around to releasing the upgrades.

Thanks dude. Yeah I'm glad the pads are finally on the way, as my freehand skills are terrible. I'm hoping for a nifty transfer sheet too, so I can add markings and hieroglyphs.

I haven't made any progress on Tactical Squad Arrathii unfortunately, but that's because I got distracted by a parcel which arrived in the post today.

I bought this secondhand Relic Contemptor for a tenner on eBay last week and I couldn't resist stripping him down and getting started as soon as I unboxed him

It took roughly an evening to get him to this stage and I'm quite liking how he's turning out. I'm quite proud of how the bottom half is shaping up and that should be judged as the standard of the eventual finished model. The top half is still a serious work in progress. There's also various scrolls and parchments which I'm going to be attaching to him in the final stages of completion.

It's a slow day at work today, so I figured I'd use the time to post this up :)

Mostly I've been focusing on painting the Dreadnought I showed in the last post, but I've also started work on Damokai himself and continued to work through my mountain of basic troops. Progress is being made, albeit slowly. I'll show him soon, once he's in a reasonable state.

Not the best of pics, but here's how the Dreadnought stands atm:

Still a long way to go on him, but I'm getting there. I'll finish him up right after I paint up my Preator for a competition next week. Between the comp, work and christmas coming up, I'm ridiculously busy atm, so I'm not even sure if I'll get him done before the deadline on monday. We'll have to see though.

So I logged onto my computer and I may have squealed a little with delight. Thousand Sons upgrades at last! I won't show them here, as the pics will be all over this site already. I've ordered three packs of pads and a torso pack.

I couldn't help let out a little chuckle when I realised that Space Wolves are now the only legion without snazzy FW upgrades.

Anyway, with pads on the way, I really should crack on with the marines they're going to be be attached to, so i spent last night doing this:

Batch painting marines gets old really quickly, but once they're done I can focus on the fun bits of the army. My bits order still hasn't arrived, so the status of my comp entry is questionable atm. I'll just have to pray it arrives later today or tomorrow.

(apologies for the terrible pic. I need to get a proper lighting set up)

I missed the competition deadline with this guy unfortunately. I just had too much to do in the build up to Christmas to sit down and get him finished properly. Nonetheless, allow me to present my current WIP: Alto Damokai, Praetor-Librarian of the Thousand Sons 55th Company.

There's still a way to go on him, but I'm really liking how he's turning out. The huge amount of hours I've spent on him is really showing through. I've made a sculpted base for him too, but I unfortunately didn't have time to snap pics of it before work this morning.

What do you think so far?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had a spurt of productivity over the New Year period and built most of my Betrayal at Calth box, which has now left me with the seemingly endless task of batching painting red on 30-40 power armoured marines.

To break up the monotony, I decided to work on my second Contemptor (I'm still deciding where to keep my first as it is or to repaint it), which is just the B@C one with reposed legs and some sarcophagus details cut away.

I'm a lot happier with this than I was with my first one, although obviously there's still a long way to go on him. He's going to be eventually armed with a Multi-Melta and CCW with Graviton Gun, posed aggressively to suit his eventual role as a vehicle hunter.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been quite ill over the last few weeks, so havn't made a huge amount of progress on anything (both within the hobby and outside it), despite having signed up for the Loyalty & Treachery challenge. Hopefully this state of affairs will improve before too much longer.

I have been working on my Tactical Sergeant though, named Arrash and a Terran by birth:

http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq107/khorneguy/IMG_3490.jpg

It's a pretty simple method:

- First I do a base of Mephiston Red, simply brushing it onto a white undercoat

- then I give it a heavy wash of Carroburg Crimson

- then I layer on a 80/20 mix of Mephiston Red and Ceramite White, leaving the wash exposed as shading.

Have you tried using a Mephiston Red spray (they do cans of it now, woo), then using a gloss varniah over the mini, and using an enamel oil in the recesses? It's pretty similar to how I do it, means you don't have to use a painstaking layering technique and takes a lot less effort :)

With the freezing weather in the UK atm, it's easier for me not to use sprays in any form.

I don't mind it taking a while. I've had this Thousand Sons force planned ever since A Thousand Sons was first released, so a few weeks extra doesn't mean much! Not I'm not coughing and spluttering everywhere, I should be able to paint much quicker now anyway :)
