ShinyRhino
Does anyone successfully use Micro Sol/Set with the basic GW decals? I've got a full sheet of Forgeworld Raven Guard decals, and I know they work great with Set/Sol. But the last time I used the regular GW decals was years ago before I'd ever heard of the stuff. I just need some larger numerals to go on my Landspeeder, and the FW sheet is really only sized for infantry as far as numerals. Will Micro Sol/Set cut down on the heavy borders/edges you normally get on GW decals? Kierdale
I try to cut away as much of that clear border as possible before using GW (or any) decals. I did that and used MicroSet and the decals came out fine. Bartali
Also matte varnish over the decal afterwards. It'll get rid of the sheen off the decal and blend it into the model Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317247-micro-solset-and-gw-decals/#findComment-4254754 Share on other sites

winterdyne
Yep, works fine. They're quite thick so multiple applications of microsol are required. Expect to spend several hours getting a squad decalled - it takes that long because each application of microsol has to do its thing and dry. Using a hairdryer doesn't really accelerate the process as the decal solution (an acetic acid) needs to react with the acetate the decal is printed on. Takes time - drying the solution off just evaporates it and doesn't actually speed this reaction. Because you're applying several runs of microsol, you absolutely need a good, solid, gloss under it. Also, gloss over the decals after they're flat, before a matt coat. By the time they're eroded well enough to bed in they'll be extremely fragile. Follow this: http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/winterdyne_tutorial3.pdf And you should be fine. ShinyRhino
Thanks, Winterdyne. That's a really good write-up. I remember seeing it once before, but never used it as I was freehanding all my Ultramarines at the time. Raven Guard are just too much work to free hand.
