Ultramarine vet
So I am now collecting Howling Griffons! A big force of them. The problem is that I am not too sure on how to paint them, and I can't find any reliable tutorials. They are quartered red and yellow. The steps I currently think I want to do is the following..... 1. Use the white can primer and spray them down. 2. Use a base yellow (not sure which yellow at the moment) in the appropriate areas. 3. Base Mephiston red in the appropriate areas. 4. Water them down in Nuln Oil. 5. Layer the base yellow with Flash Gitz yellow. 6. Layer Mephiston red with Sunset Scarlet. Done. I'm just not sure if that is the best way to go about it, as I am very new to the quartering concept. Anyone know if this is a good way or if you have a better idea? Let me know, I would appreciate any and all help! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317286-painting-howling-griffons/ Share on other sites
Bung
You could look up the Badab War Books from FW. There is a variant armour painting with only the shoulder pads quatered. winterdyne
I would paint and shade the yellow first (directed/pin washes of sepia), then base the red in a dark red (VMC burnt cadmium red) and highlight up from there without washes. I'd also work over black, using something like VGC heavy ochre as a base for the yellow, saves having to do the directed washes as you can layer up from there. I'd expect to take around 4-5 hours per marine, average, so you may want to work over white, which will cut the time to get the yellow done a bit, but make details a little trickier. Ultramarine vet
Thank you for the feedback guys! I think the Badab camo is a pretty cool concept, but I want to collect a full company of Howling Griffons in their standard colors. But who knows, I might collect a couple of squads of Badab squads. We shall see! The thing about painting yellow over black, is that it just doesn't.....work well. But then again I probably used the wrong stuff! Bung
Painting yellow over black always looks dirty. You need a color step between black and yellow. Here you find my way of painting yellow with an airbrush over black basecoat. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279231-fast-yellow-marines/?hl=%2Bpainting+%2Byellow&do=findComment&comment=3443943 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317286-painting-howling-griffons/#findComment-4256494 Share on other sites
Kriegsmacht
I think there was an old White Dwarf that had a how to on painting Howling Griffons. Edit: White Dwarf 303 has a section on Howling Griffons including painting them. You mentioned painting the yellow and red over the appropriate areas. The article says to apply a thinned down coat of yellow all over the white undercoat. Then paint the red in the appropriate areas. Do you know which yellow is the best for a base color? Kriegsmacht
It's an old issue they used Golden Yellow over the white. I checked the citadel paint comparison chart and it was replaced by Yriel Yellow. They then line shaded the miniature using Flesh Wash for the yellow and Brown Ink for the red. I guess use whatever would work for the colours. Then they highlighted the yellow and red pretty much the way you were going to highlight. Edit: Winterdyne brought up the shading for the yellow that would work.
