Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
We can't assume that's how it should be looked at. The Space Marine codex isn't an account of the History of Marines dug out from millennia old sources, it's an author outlining facts. Going back to the point Legatus brought up, exactly why do some people feel the need for the Ultramarines lore to be nerfed? Every time I read about the Sons of Horus they were described as perfect in every way, and people are fine with that. Most Legions have real flaws either with their doctrines or Primarchs, the whole idea behind the Ultramarines is that they didn't share those flaws. There was no inclination for violence, for secrecy, for mistrust - they were disciplined tacticians and their Primarch a visionary for the future of mankind. This is what myself and Legatus like about the Ultras. We don't criticise those with an affinity for the Space Wolves for example - if drunken, space viking is your thing that's entirely up to you. The idea that the Ultramarines, a Legion and Chapter that has always been described as Tactical geniuses are being written as a force that relies on swarm tactics is rediculous. I can't think of a legion with a more controversial portrayal in the Heresy series than the space wolves. Only Legatus gets upset about the Ultras fluff. Everybody loses their minds when a space wolf book comes out. trust me, the Wolf backlash was enough for me to leave this subforum for a bit. As excited as I am for the eventual release of the Vlka Fenryka, I wince to think of the wave of crap that will emerge at the same time I thought the Ultramarines grew because they absorbed some of the two missing legions? that was a theory out forward by gossiping Word Bearers. the author has even stated on B&C (he posts here and on the BL forum a good bit) that there is no verifiable truth to this statement, merely hearsay by bitter soldiers. HaSY
Since Ultramarines is closest to a Roman army, the Roman navy is not that particularly famed and formidable in comparison to the legion. Back to Guilliman, practicality means he prefers quick, rapid response patrol vessels to deal with the threats in 500 worlds. These ships are easy to build and maintain by any shipyards in the Ultramar. During Calth, the fleet has been reduced to 1/5 of its strength. In Betrayer, even Guilliman had a hard time in scrapping back a fleet to strike back and by the events of Unremembered Empire, they are actively salvaging any ship to be used by the legion. But bear in mind, Guilliman loves to requisition ships from the Navy for more support instead of using his own because he believe Space Marines should be focusing on boarding actions. Only the 9th chapter is specialised in void warfare.A lot of people cannot deal with the writing of FW that the Emperor intended and encouraged the traits that will define the legion. Night Lords is one of the best examples because their recruits are really from sunless prison. Perhaps, the Emperor did want to send them there... Only Space Wolves, Salamanders and Alpha Legion are really the extension of Emperor's designs. More and more events in their history have not redefine their purpose but play major role in taking their just-as-planned traits further and their Primarchs further boosted that. Legatus
Since Ultramarines is closest to a Roman army, the Roman navy is not that particularly famed and formidable in comparison to the legion. Other than european knights, who were known for their massive fleets.
