Index Astartes: The Red Table

Okay, guys, so... I've given it a lot of thought, and I think I've got the image that I'm going to send to my graphic designer. Let me explain my thought process:

  1. All the designs I've thought about so far seem really busy when compared to the chapter symbols that are my favorites, which tend to be simpler and more elegant.
  2. The Terminus Guard claim to be (and may believe they are, and may actually be) Sons of Dorn, and most of them have a thing for hands.
  3. A lot of the ideas that I was considering were really getting away from the "medieval death iconography and reliquaries and skulls everywhere" theme that originally inspired me.
  4. Some simpler images are available on the Internet and could make the creation of a sketch to send to my designer a lot easier.

Anyway... here's what I'm thinking now:

Just imagine the gray flat part of the pad as red and the rim and bones as both bone-colored.

Thoughts?

Couple things
first you have a typo in the description of the weapon that killed mordecai where the "im" in "impossible" is missing
second, the timeline's first two events are out of order

third
I like the icon a ton, although I think perhaps the colours might be better as greyscale

but the main reason I like the icon is this: What is the only extant part of Rogal Dorn remaining? His skeletal hands.

Aha! You got it!

I think it looks a lot better in greyscale right now, but that's probably because I did a terrible job coloring it and the colors are all awful and flat (the red will be a lot rustier/old-bloodier and the white will be more of a bone color). Painted up, I think it will look pretty good.

I thought I'd crosspost my post from the tactica thread on the chapter master I'm thinking of to get the advice of anyone following the project here:

I'm trying to build up a chapter master for my custom chapter. I'm going to be creating the model with two different levels: the "casual play" level, which will be a standard legal chapter master, and the "campaign play" level, where I'm going to build up a special character with some custom rules, for use with my good friends at the FLGS. I'm not out to win every game, but I'd like to make sure I don't lose every game either. I'd like to get your feedback before I start gluing things together.

Here's the thought:

Chapter Master
 • Artificer Armor
 • Power Fist (in campaign mode, or with my opponent's permission, I'll be using this as a power scythe, which means it's two-handed, unwieldy, S+1 and AP 3, and can make a sweep attack to hit every enemy in base contact)
 • Relic Blade
 • Digital Weapons (modeled as a pet cyber-vulture)

For context, I'll be using Iron Hands chapter tactics in casual games, though I've invented my own "Terminus Guard" chapter tactics for campaign-level games, and he'll be rolling up in a land raider accompanied by a command squad (for the 4+ FNP) and a librarian. The idea behind his gear is that when his command squad is outnumbered, he can whip out the power scythe and sweep away a ton of enemies, but when he's in a challenge he can use the relic blade. Both weapons are two-handed, so neither is missing out on not being paired with a pistol.

What do you think? Decently useful? Or a total waste of time?

Check out my chapter master:

Master Andrew Apollyon (250 points)

  • WS 6, BS 5, S 4, T 4, W 4, I 5, A 5, Ld 10, Sv 2+
  • Wargear: Artificer Armor, Demarcation, Eternal Warrior, Frag & Krak Grenades, Gryppus, Iron Halo, Orbital Strike
    • Demarcation is a Master Crafted power scythe. However, when Master Apollyon fights using Demarcation, use the Fighting Styles rule described below rather than the profile provided above.
    • Gryppus is a cyber-familiar with the form of a large vulture. Gryppus allows Master Apollyon to reroll one failed to-wound roll per round of combat. Additionally, when Master Apollyon is fighting in a challenge, Gryppus forces his opponent to reroll one successful to-hit roll per round of combat.
  • Special Rules: And They Shall Know No Fear, Chapter Tactics: Terminus Guard, Fighting Styles
    • Fighting Styles: At the start of each Fight sub-phase, Master Apollyon can chose between two different fighting styles. If he choses Penetrating Strike Style, his scythe Demarcation has Strength x2, and AP 2. If he choses Whirling Scythe Style, Demarcation has Strength +2, AP 3, Concussive, and Sweeping Blow
  • Warlord Trait: If Master Apollyon is your warlord, he always has the following warlord trait rather than rolling.
    • Angel of Death: Master Apollyon and his unit cause Fear, and whenever an opponent makes a Leadership test to resist this Fear, they must do so on three dice rather than two.

Check it out: Andrew Apollyon, Master of the Terminus Guard!

Still waiting on a pointing hand (GW, from eBay) and his scythe and chapter symbol shoulder pad (Shapeways).

Check it out - an awful WIP photo!

Now that the fluff basics have been nailed down, I'm thinking of starting a new thread with a proper title. I'll post a link here when I do (though I expect you'll all find it on your own).

  • 4 weeks later...

Last night I had a dream where Spikey Bits apparently had a service where you would ship them an army, pay them a small monthly fee, and they would keep it for you. In this dream, I got an email from Spikey Bits saying that I had an entire Space Marine army that I'd forgotten about, which they were now sending back to me. When the package arrived, I found an army with a sort of a Blood-Angels feel, but more medieval and creepy and death-obsessed and less renaissance-y and beautiful (but plus skulls). Lots of skull helmets, long knives, corpse imagery, etc.

I've decided that I'm at least going to write an Index Astartes for these guys, and who knows? Maybe I'll build up a detachment or a Zone Mortalis force for them.

If you ever decide to roll out your Chapter on those Tables from the DEATHWATCH RPG then I think we can safely say that your Chapter was Founded after Strategic Prognostication!laugh.png

In all seriousness one has to admit that I admire your ability to make dreams reality with such surety and skill; I've had the odd idea come to me in dreams (some so odd that I won't even TRY to work out how on Earth to share them with others without risking the straightjacket without being physically present to make my self-deprecation explicit, rather than implicit), but I'm not sure that I've ever been able to bring any of them into the waking world.
