*Stumbles into AoD*

So, earlier today, this happened:

...

I hate to admit it but...

I think Flint might have made me want to collect a pre-Heresy/Heresy-era force...

...

Damn dry.png

It's ok Dos... it's all ok.... just come on down to the AoD and we'll make it all better... biggrin.png

...and here I am.

The culprit here, as mentioned above, is Flint. More specifically her awesome version of Jubal Khan, Lord of the Summer Lightning. Now that I have her recipe for the white armour and the bronze parts, I just need the recipe for her red (which I may or may not use).

As the core of this potential new project, I have 20 of the BaC Mk IV Marines. My idea is to go with two squads of 10 infantry mounted in Rhinos to have a fast-moving force. However, that's about as far as I have come because I don't really know where to go from here. I don't know of anyone in my area who plays the Horus Heresy ruleset but I would still like to have a force that follows the army list and rules published by Forge World just in case I meet someone/manage to convince someone to join me.

So, I guess the first question is: do you people have any advice that I could find useful? Some "best practice"-type tips or something along those lines?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Dos

EDIT: Forgot to make it explicit: yes, I would like to go with White Scars.

Phhhhhoooooooooooooooooboy where to start where to start.

First:

ALL ACCORDING TO PLAN! IT WORKED FLINT WE GOT HIM ON THE TRAIN! HE'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO LEAVE NOW AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Heresy Train

Next, Get dem Red Books if you haven't already pirate.gif pirate.gif

Read the most recent FaQ in the FW DL Section after having gone through the books.

Save money 'till February so you can instantly buy Book 6 for White Scar rules.

Slowly ease THE HERETICS YOU DARE CALL FRIENDS into playing 30k vs 40k -> 30k vs 30k devil.gif devil.gif (again, the most Recent FAQ has some pointers on how to translate some things to work in 30k v 40k, the rest is common sense or Player Approval).

Third:

Read some posts in the Tactica and Rule section and/or List building to give you an idea on how things go.

aaaaaaand Brain Farts. I'll get back to this when my brain is back.

I assume you're going White Scars yeah? Two 10-man tac squads in Rhinos is probably the best start. From there, if you don't have the basic red book (Legiones Astartes Crusade Army List, or LACAL) you might want to get that. You can skip the other red book, it doesn't have anything White Scars-related. There are rumors of a LACAL 2.0 coming out later this year though so you could always wait for that and just build a core force until then. Book VI will have your Legion rules and probably some cool Scars campaign info so that'll probably be worth grabbing.

So, rules books covered, what to get for your force? Sicaran tanks go great with anything, so a great choice there. Bikes are a no-duh. Jetbikes with melta bombs make great harassing anti-tank, and the regular bikes are an incredibly good choice for both shooting (with twin-linked plasma/melta) and for assault (with access to lots of power weapons). Dreadnoughts? All of those things are cool to have and will work around just about anything that comes out for your Legion rules.

You'll need an HQ or several too, of course, and that's up to you. Probably good to get a model to use as your Praetor, and then look into a consul or several. Librarian, Masters of Signal, Chaplains, Delegatus anything. Cover whatever bases you get inspired by, it's one model that can easily change how your force plays so it's great to have tons of them.

Are you doing Whits Scars? If so, I've had wet dreams about running two ten man despoiler squads (read: tacticals armed with bolters/pistols/chainswords) in two rhinos alongside some bike and fast tank elements.

As above, I'd recommend getting the first red book as it'll have all the rules you want and need for a basic army organization until the White Scar's rules come out - or whichever other legion you choose.

I'd highly recommend looking at a Sicaran tank as they're easy to use and have a high weapons fire volume for one little tank. They're so good that they'd honestly fit into whatever list you can dream of that's not a drop pod heavy one.

Terminators are also very useful and are a good transition from 40k to 30k with a 4++ inv save and flexibility in weapons choices: you can take them with nearly any power weapon, claws, fists, and combi weapons of your choosing.

Hope that helps!

Rumour has it Scars will be able to have Jetbikes as non compulsory troops meaning you will still need the tactical squads anyway so a good start. I would hold on for the red book purely because supposedly we have an updated one coming out.

As letsYouDown said Sicarans are always safe and as they are fast are a good choice. Honestly build the basics till Feb then make some choices. Personally I don't rate Outrider bikes in 30k as I think they are overcosted for what they do. Jetbikes all the way. You need to make a choice about the Dreadnoughts as supposedly Scars don't use them until recently that recently changed. See how you feel about the fluff yourself.

As a fast list generally you can make some really cool combinations but 2 things generally stick out to me when doing it. Good ways of dealing with Spartans and large Infantry blobs can be a pain unless you take Fire Raptors or lightning strike fighters. If you can be flexible about taking certain things like artillery that may help you.

I'll try and find a link but check out OldOneEye's thread. Massive source of inspiration for me as I'm just starting Scars aswell.

Here it is 16 pages of Epic!

Also when Slipstreams speaks you listen. He is like the emperor around here haha

And now with that done, back to helping indoctrinate welcome Dos-Bro and help him buy enough resin that, monetarily speaking, would leave him no longer able to leave.

<soft notes of 'Hotel California' playing>

I'd suggest getting another BaC box (or two, or three, or...) to acquire heresy plastics. If for nothing else to give the false hope that you'll still have money in your wallet (not that it will be enough for you to get off the Heresy Train™ ).

With two boxes, you 'll have:

A half dozen each of flamers, plasma guns*, and meltaguns to arm some 5-man tactical-support squads.

A half dozen each of heavy bolters & missile launchers for some 5-man heavy support squads.

A half dozen power fists, plasma pistols, combi-fl/mg/pg options.

10 Cataphractii Terminators (5 with Lightning Claws, 5 Combi-bolters/Power fists - or chainfists, a pair of power swords and heavy flamers and *two plasma guns can be used to make a plasma blaster)

2 Contemptor Dreadnoughts (with some snipping you can give each a dual set of armaments; one with two multi-meltas, one with two twin-assault cannons)

Assorted bitz like 24 studded shoulder pads, 24 ammo packs, 60 frag/krak grenades, 6 meltabombs, etc...

60 Mk IV helmets, torsos, legs, etc can go a long way with mixing and matching with other space marine models to stretch the heresy style in your numbers further.

Go to FW for some of the shiny legion-specific bitz and KRAKKACHOOM! You can't go wrong.

Ciao,

R.

Welcome! I used to hate on Forgeworld... Some people still remember! (ADB lol)

In my defence that was back during the start of 6th when 40k was a lot more regimented.

Anyways, you'll love 30k. It's a more elegant form of the game we like, set during a more civilised age :-P

...

Right.

You madman. Go get your brain back, you.

And thanks for the advice.

Gotcha. Thanks for the tips and suggestions.

Despoilers were what I had in mind for the core of the force. Cheers for the advice, helpful indeed!

So eventually, half of us are going to try and kill him?
You do realise that means one of you are gonna sacrifice yourselves to save him, whoever killed the martyr is gonna be killed by Slipstreams, someone else is gonna go mad and let himself get shanked, someone else might get killed but also may have faked it and the rest of you are gonna ascend to a higher state of existence and generally do jack for the foreseeable future.

Oh yeah, and Slipstreams will become a vegetable and spend the next ten millenia listening to people on the internet picking apart & criticising every decision he's ever made. ;)
