Muffins progress blog

So I finally have some time off of work for the holidays. This will be the beginning of a sort of blog for me that I have already strung about various threads here. This will be where my collective works will be kept as far as miniature converting and painting goes along with building the fluff for my army. So I will welcome any and all critique and advice.

Thank you for any of you who decide they want to go on this sort of "journey" with me.

Little change of pace. I put off the painting and assembled this fellow for the armory advance! I will say changing the angle of the torso really made a difference. I see a lot of people adjust the legs a little but I've always been a fan of just adjusting the torso on dreadnought models to add a little more depth.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just an update, have been working a ton these last few weeks so my miniatures have been pushed to the way side. I have assembled almost all of my pledge for the armory advance (8 MK IV grey hunters to go and some green stuff).

With the release of the wulfen in bound I have held off messing with painting my 1850 list until I decide what type of list I want to run. I have not had a fully painted army since I started the hobby 16 years ago. I will say I do draw a ton of inspiration from a lot of you on these forums and it does cause me to want to finish my "core" list before I branch out and get the rest done.

The whole list of my army is as follows:

HQ units:

2 wolf Lords 1 on foot 1 on wolf both in Runic armor

1 rune priest

2 wolf priest 1 in TDA one in PA

3 WGBL 1 in TDA 2 in PA

Elites

Murderfang

Venerable dread

Contemptor dread

2 IP both either on foot or on wolves (modeled for them to be either)

6 TDAWG

Troops

50+ grey hunters (not sure on exact number here)

10 blood claws

Fast Attack

5 sky claws

4 swift claws (can be 6 I just have to dig for the bikes)

3 thunderwolves

Heavy Support

4 long fangs with ml and ancient

1 predator

Also:

5 rhinos

I know this is all a solid start to a great company and gives me a good solid options as far as what I want to run list wise. Just seems really overwhelming when I sit down and look at it trying to decide what my next move is. I think what I want to do is finish assembling everything I have and then move on to list building once I get the 2 boxes of wulfen I want (along with rumor of krom and the plastic wp). Any advice any of you could give me on the next steps to make sure I finish painting the bulk of this this year would be awesome tired of looking at unpainted plastic!

Edit: what I mean to ask is in what order would you start as far as painting goes?

Well the order is up to you. Personally I would start with a troops unit but it doesn't really matter. The important thing for is to mix it up. When I have a ton of different stuff to paint (which is all the time) I make sure I'm always doing something new. It keeps me interested. So I might paint three grey hunters, and then I might do a vehicle, anther few hubters, then a cool converted hq model. Might not work for everyone but I know I make much more progress that way than sitting down and saying, oh boy, let's paint 50 grey hubters.

See your way is what I am doing now and it's causing me to lose interest in painting. So I may try the "start with troops" move. The biggest part to this whole thing is staying on track and having time through the week to sit and paint.

Finishing up my vow to the armory advance. Still have a bit of work to do with sculpting and bases.

Void claws, contemptor dread, 9 man squad of grey hunters 1 melta gun and 1 plasma gun with a pack leader equipped with a combi melta and power fist. With my B@C box I want to go a little less full wolf and more with tribe markings and runes on the armor. I want these wolves to be more about uniformity than personal trophies (will still be rocking some pelts but nothing like their brethren from the current time line.)

Cheers!

Finished up the last bit of grey hunters (for now) and began pulling my older ones from their 25mm bases to re-base them on to 32mm once my order comes in this week.

I went back and looked at the paint job on my first squad and decided that I'm going to change it up a bit. Painting should start with in the next or few weeks once my wulfen are together.

  • 3 weeks later...

Been a few weeks since my last update. I have put together my 10 wulfen, ulrik, a few other minor tweaks here and there and am going to be working on sculpting over the next few weeks to fill in gaps and wolfy mcwolf out some of my marines who are lacking in that department.

My whole goal for this year is to get at least 1850 points together and painted, build my deathwatch kill team (not following the rules presented this is strictly for show. which will consist of 1 member from each loyalist first founding chapter and an inquistor who was assigned to the kill team.)I will also be working on my second great company which will center around, terminators, dreadnoughts, 'claws, and drop pods hopefully getting enough to run blackmanes as a seperate list. Still very early in the year and a ton of modelling and painting is upon me. I'm just glad I feel like I'm out of the funk I've been in over the last few months with the hobby! Time to get building, grab my brushes and get on it!

Cross posted in the *what are you working on?" Thread. This is a test mini for my skyclaws just base coated right now. Shade and highlight to follow. This was about 45 minutes of work so hopefully another 20 minutes of actual work minus dry time and he will be finished. I think following this new flow on painting I did with this mini I should be able to crank out my stuff for ETL (which I'm staying away from my vow stuff right now but it's been hard)

Axe in one hand, chainsword in the other and you would have a decent looking Wolf Lord, Jarl Sven Bloodhowl.

Looks really good as a Skyclaw though :)

I could do a simple arm swap! I honestly have never used a wolf lord with a jump pack might be something to try some time.

Neither have I but in the artwork from CotW I think, it is pretty close to how he has been drawn.

Haha I just found the art work you are referring to. Entirely coincidence but perhaps I will model him that way grab another jump pack and use this guy as the pack leader.

  • 2 months later...
So since ETL has started i suppose i will give a bit of an update. I am working on finishing up my first vow for etl. I just started work on the minis a few days ago. For the past month and a half i have been jumping around on shifts at work, had a name day come and go, and have been under the weather for about a month now. I have been feeling the itch to paint and finish these guys up for awhile now so i think i will be making quick work of them. Pictures to follow after i get the base coats completed.

Thanks dantay!

I received my airbrush this week and have knocked out my three thunderwolves within the first 45 minutes of using it just a quick shade of agrax and the small detail work and they will be done. Basically this comes down to "what have I been doing with my life up until now?" This has made painting and blending easy.

P.s

Bad lighting for pictures. I'll take some more once I get some better lighting and they are finished

Yup, airbrushes are super awesome aren't they.

I put up and airbrushing tips post in the master tips thread, not sure if it will be of any help to you.

Looking nice and grey!! :tu:

this was my first time ever using one. Took a second to get used to but I am actually digging it over using a normal brush especially for the quick base and highlight. I figure I'll shade it down by brush and hit the top with a quick dry brush once the shade is dry. I was going to do a timber wolf look to these guys but I think I want this pack the dark grey. I just picked up a box of Thunder wolves the other day and I think I'll make those the timber/brown wolf look to differentiate the squads.
