Need help, newbie painter

So I have foolishley bit off more tan I culd chew.

I'm trying to paint my Sons of Horus remnants the Lupercalian and I have no idea what the :cuss I'm doing.

I bought these paitns today:

-Incubi Darkness

-Kabalite Green

-Sybarite Green

-Abaddon Black

-Coelia Greenshade

-Leadbelcher

-Zhandri Dust

-Jokaero Orange

-Lahmian Medium

 

The models were already black so I did two thin basecoats of Kabalite Green and added the coelia afterwards. Then I releasied I forgot to use the damn Incubi Darkness.

 

What I'm trying to say is I don't know what to do next. Highlighting confuses me and I don't get what people mean by layering? How does one colour over another make a difference? Are the paints slightly transparent or waht?

 

It's just riling me up at the fact I can't get it right. I came back to these hobby after a hiatus, before I didn't appreciate the hobby and I've never actually painted a model complete before.
