Wolfbiter's Heresy Blog: Night Lords

Hi folks. Like many others recently, I've decided to take the plunge and start a Heresy army after purchasing the Betrayal at Calth set. I'm going to start off with Night Lords--their amazing Heresy color scheme, the great novels by ADB and the cool rules made this choice a no-brainer for me. smile.png

So here are the starting models for my force. The first is Brother Grathos, called 'Ironbane' by his brothers, a Contemptor Dreadnought of the First Company. I'd originally build the model with a Heavy Bolter, because at the time I'd simply wanted to build and paint a Contemptor with no plans for a full Heresy army. But after speaking with folks here in the forums, and seeing FW's great Volkite gun, I decided to upgrade his weaponry.

In my backstory, Grathos was mortally injured in battle with the Iron Hands at Istvaan, and interred within a Dreadnought. Now, he looks for any chance to wreak vengeance on the X Legion, and has participated in many strikes against Iron Hands survivors fleeing the massacre. The irony of using a Dreadnought chassis to take revenge on the sons of Ferrus Manus is not lost on him, and his hatred of the Iron Tenth inspired his brothers to nickname him 'Ironbane.'

And here's my first two test Marines from Betrayal at Calth:

And of course, one of my favorite characters from the Horus Heresy-Sevatar, the Prince of Crows:

More to come. I hope you folks like them!

Looks awesome. Only "complaint" I have with the models is Ironbane's Missile Launcher looks slightly unfinished. Perhaps a Red or similar spot colour on the tips of the missiles, or banding around it might help offset the otherwise blinding white of them.

I think I found the paint scheme I've been looking for! I absolutely love the contemptor, may I ask what paint scheme do use? I must have it!

The only thing I see is that sevaters chainglaives looks a bit plain.

This already looks really cool, I must have MOAR!!!

Thanks for the feedback!

@ThatOneMarshal: Hey, I really appreciate the kind words regarding Brother Grathos and his color scheme! Unfortunately, it may be hard to duplicate the colors I used. I painted Grathos using a 50/50 mix of Kantor Blue and the old Necron Abyss foundation paint. I loved the way it turned out, used most of my supply of Necron Abyss for my Dreadnought, and was going to use the recipe for any future Night Lords...and then GW changed their paint line again, and removed Necron Abyss from the range. So I had to start from scratch for the rest of the army. Aaaargh.

I've switched over to using Vallejo Game Color Night Blue as my new base. It's fairly close to Necron Abyss but is a lot glossier when it dries. I would suggest trying mixing that and Kantor Blue in different ratios. I played around with a 50/50 mix last night and it looked fairly close to my original formula.

For the infantry, I'm doing one coat of Night Blue over a black primer spray, then a second thin coat of Kantor Blue over that, followed by Drakenhof Nightshade to darken the lines and grooves (love Drakenhof Nightshade) and then highlighting edges with Alaitoc Blue. Right now I'm working on my next 3 infantry, and got caught up in customizing some terror markings...I will post pics when I've got more progress done.

P.S. I totally agree about Sev's chainblade, I've tried a few times to add darker elements and it just came out...weird. I'm going to try to use some Nuln Oil wash later on the inner chainsaw itself under/inside the blade and see if I can get some better contrast.
