Storm Eagle or Fire Raptor

Hey whats up, I hope everybody is haveing a merry christmas season and that there stockings get filled up with lots of resin and plastic.  I have decisded to get an order in so i can grab that free shiping voucher before January (in case i want to make a small order later) but im stuck.

I don't game very much but a new games workshop store has opened only minutes from my house in kitchener Ontario so I intend to change this, not to mention I have been painting infantry for far to long and need something exciting to break it up.

I struggle with what is the most effective use of my dollar though. I don't know whether to get Fire Raptor or a Storm Eagle I have lots of infantry including termies and i want to get a leviathan and some breachers and some assorted bits.  to round it out big enough to get the free delivery i have to choose either a storm eagle or fire raptor and i can't decide ( i want both ) the fire raptor is great but the leviathan is already taking up a heavy support slot for small games and the Eage is a fast attack which is nice for force composition.  The only other option is to get the two birds first and skip the dread is the fire raptor a superior Hvy Support option in enough ways to just not get the dread until later. Any input into the performance of either the Leviathan Storm Eagle or Fire raptor is much appreciated.

PS. I play Imperial Fists and the gaming tables are typically small 4"X4" but are sometimes joined together for big games so bear in mind probably not alot of games more the 2000pts (at least to start) I also have no idea on the 30K meta there...like at all but i was assured that there are a few other guys looking to start into it.

Never used the Storm Eagle so can't to comment. I will say the raptor is amazing and people will learn to fear it. Every army in my gaming group uses at least one because they are that bloody good. To the point I am actively avoiding it to mix things up a bit. Arm it with Reaper Autocannons and keep the bog standard missiles and laugh at the people crying as it changes the game the turn it comes in.

It's also supposedly a shed load easier to build the the Eagle

Speaking purely about effectiveness, point for point the fire raptor is definitely better. Flying transports just don't seem that effective to me, if you have an assault unit in the storm eagle it's not assaulting till turn 3 at the earliest, and you have to invest a lot of pts in the storm eagle to make its firepower effective. Fire raptor on the other hand is awesome-you've got those autocannon turrets and missiles for shredding light/medium armor, and the main gun is great for anti meq

^ this.

I have a raptor and it has never failed to impress.  It has made its points back during the turn it arrives on more than one occasion and it really can be a game-changer.  If you're playing against a non-reserve army, it may even be worth buying a Skyshield Landing Pad to get it flying 1st turn but, personally, I like the 'coming-on-the-table-with-flames-of-glory-and-turning-the-tide-of-battle' style of a later arrival.

On a building note, mine was an absolute pig to put together.  I'm a pretty experienced modeller but I really struggled to the point of getting my FLGS manager to build it for me (time was also against me) as I just couldn't get the pieces straight.  From what I hear though, it sounds like I am the exception rather than the rule.... Storm Eagles have a worse rep!

I can't comment on the Storm Eagle apart from echoing the above comments re: 3rd turn assault...unless you get the Landing Pad ;-)

I have a raptor and it has never failed to disappoint.

I think you meant that it has never disappointed you? Never failed to disappoint means it disappoints you every single time you use it.

If you're worried about having a heavily conjested heavy slot I feel your pain so I'd suggest a lightning or 2 as you can tailor its loadout each game. I've popped Spartans first turn using a sky shield and kraken rockets watching their deathstar foot slogging up the in table was sweet
thank you all for you're input yeah the congested heavy slot is indeed the problem but it sounds like I will probly get the fire raptor for sure now but do I get the eagle or the dread becomes the problem the lightnings do not inspire me the just don't but I probly can't field the dread and the raptor so hmmmmmmm.

I haven't read the rules for that pattern dreadnought yet....but, they'd have to be absolutely immense to sway me away from a Fire Raptor.  The range of the guns, speed and sheer devastation they can cause makes me think there isn't a pattern of dreadnought armour with weapon load out that is a better choice than a Raptor.

Didn't think that Lightning had Hover?

well thank you for the inputa fire raptor shall be winging it's way to me in the new year and the storm eagle plan shall stay grounded for another order perhaps I really want to start gaming this year if anyone has opinions on lists to field them in I'm all ears I really appreciate the wisdom of the Fraters here. I think I shall try and biuld a pride of the legion list to 1500 pts I already have 30 marines and 5 cataphractii and an assortment of characters and I will get me some BaC box set the contemptor and cataphractii alone make it a good buy so we will see what I come up with for a list in a few days thanks again

I've built mine in the last few days - and am very happy with my Fire Raptor. Have proxied once and it did very well, would highly recommend on that basis and it is such a nice model. I think I had more luck than Marv in building mine, but a challenging hybrid kit.

Storm Eagle also has used though, depends on where you are filling slot wise and the general army synergy too.
