not through it yet, need to admit I'm not a fan how they handled the fists (the name thing ... EDIT: also what they did with them at the end ......).

But it's pretty cool to see the Senat and the politics, also good to know the Arbites existed back during the GC era too (Necromunda we need you msn-wink.gif)

My biggest problem with that book: it's too short. it's more a novella, and not as awesome as Horus Rising or Talon of Horus. :<

Is it OK if I DM you Lady Atia? I suspect you won't be interested but I'd like to ask anyway:) How vague is that? lol!

Yes, I really enjoyed the book. I loved Abnett's obsession with what seem to be proto-Tyranids (like in Horus Rising), and he really took the time to develop characters and scenarios before finally having the Orks worm their way into the tale. Too short overall, but I thoroughly liked it!

pretty much went through 200 pages in one night, so I loved it. I actually wanted to see more of the orks, though.

the Deffstar at the end though was cool, and I love how detailed hey made it sound, like the several giant faces on it that move with the warboss's mouth as he yells insults at people. I can't wait for the final bossfight with the Beast! And I hope Slaughter gets more screen time later on, as he was fairly badass. Maybe he becomes the first deathwatch marine before the imperial fists are returned back to full strength?

I really enjoyed the Fisty flavor that Dan added with details like wall names/wall companies and "shield corps" to describe their battle companies. He did well to add a distinct flavor to the chapter without having to deviate from their codex compliance. Having Mr. Abnett kick off a series is always a good decision in my book (no pun intended)!

As an aside, why is it with everyone ALWAYS trying to draw a connection between 'nids and unrelated insectoid xenos? That's like saying that, because they all are upright bipedal vertebrates, Eldar, Humans and Tau must be related! I mean really...don't you think there's enough room in the galaxy (and beyond, in the nids' case) for some variety?

Just finished it - a real page-turner for me, as it was quick paced! Did definitely enjoy it - and like others, look forward to the series on the whole.

As Atia mentions, the naming convention was something a bit different - but I think I got into it as the book wore on.

I have just finished it,

when I listened to the last track "that's it?" as I said it in my car.

So yeah the story is quite different from I'd think it will be, a nice scene from all the 30k stuff.

Quite nice that Abnett decides to show how the wheel of politic spins after the Heresy, but sometimes I got mixed up with the name and all (maybe because I was listening to it)

and Beast Cruel is :cuss Awesome!!

That's just the way it is... I suspect that it will transpire at some stage that the Vespid are somehow related to 'Nids.

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't gotten around to reading it; university is keeping me busy enough that I can't quite spend the time I'd want reading 40k lore.

I read the excerpt when it came out and was quite intrigued, and the names didn't bother me at all. Actually, the names were a nice idea, I think, since they kinda gave the fists a RT-era vibe, back when marines were somewhat more akin to mercenary soldiers than mindscrubbed weapons... Kinda seems to explain how the RT-vibe fit into the whole 30k/40k-verse.
