Do you guys think the adoptions of company colours on the shoulder pads is prevalent in the Ultramarines. The scouts from Aegida had the black and yellow on their pads and the Nova Company veterans had the quartered Novamarine colours on theirs. I'm thinking of doing the Ulixis Company with quartered red and tan shoulder pads.

ADB has been seen on B&C before, wouldn't be surprised if some authors visit /tg/.

ADB is actually a regular on here :P He just lurks most of the time.

Company Shoulder Heraldry is the easiest route, I've found, since 30k Marines didnt really give a damn what you put on your shoulders so long as you paid homage to the Legion.

Well, that is apart from the Emperor's Children, who did not care unless it was not pretty and covered in enough Gold and finery to put MR.T to shame!

Having just finished Pharos, there are a few interesting points before i'd like to mention before an in depth review.

Again spoilers follow:

-The confrontation between Curze and Sanguinius has some interesting dialogue. Both as primarchs with premonitions seem to have a sense of kinship between them. The two Primarchs don't fight. Curze is unsure he could defeat Sanguinius, and Sanguinius lets Curze live as he belives anyone can be redeemed. Also, Curze has a great nickname for Guilliman. "The Avenging Beancounter."

That's really odd...on another site, a poster provided this contradictory spoiler

Sanguinius and Conrad Curze have an encounter and a duel. They are quite evenly matched. The dialogue and the perspective of the opposing primarchs is the some of the best in the book. And poor Azkaellon is used as a rag-doll by Curze.

What actually happens

Curze and Sanguinius fight extremely briefly. Both have visions of what could happen, and are perfectly matched due to their precognition. Sanguinius is not in full warplate, either could have triumphed had it been a serious fight. The duel itself is pretty inconsequential, and only goes on until Sanguinius realises that Konrad is really there to talk, not murder him. Both stop fighting because they're so evenly matched.

Later, after talking for a while, Curze gives Sanguinius the chance to kill him, but Sanguinius stops the blow in mid air out of pity. Curze then blows up a whole lot of Sanguinary Guard, throws Azkaellon (if that's how you spell his name) off a cliff and disappears.

I'm sorry, I just don't see Curze and Sanguinius being evenly matched. It's been stated numerous times that Sanguinius is almost the paragon of Primarch ability... in fact, I'm pretty sure it's been said the only ones who even stand a chance against him are Horus and Angron. I'm sure any Primarch can best another given the right conditions, but it doesn't sound like they were in Curze's element.

It wouldn't have been a fair fight - like I said, Sanguinius has a sword but only a breastplate (if I remember correctly), Curze is arrayed in his full panoply of war with his claws etc. Both have their precognitive powers so are relatively evenly matched on the psychic front.

But yeah, the duel in Pharos isn't an accurate representation of both at the peak of their powers/preparation. That being said, Sanguinius is definitely wary of Curze. I think it would be pretty close, and wouldn't underestimate Curze. He is more than capable.

Sanguinius’ wings twitched. He doubted he would survive this encounter; Curze had taxed both the Lion and Guilliman when they had fought him together. But then, as he thought on it, flashes of the future burst in his mind, presenting him with a succession of strikes and counter-strikes. Curze leaping from the throne, a flurry of blades. Sanguinius gutted. Sanguinius leaping into the air, Curze struck down. Curze waiting until Sanguinius was close, then striking his head from his shoulders. Sanguinius anticipating this, and burying his sword in Curze’s sternum.

Does Curze actually have the highest primarch duel tally? He's fought the Lion, Guilliman, Vulkan, Corax at Isstvan with Lorgar, and now Sanguinius tongue.png He's only missing a few to complete his set

You forgot Dorn.

It also makes him the least deadly serial killer of all times. A perfect portrayal of the Night Lords.

I am really hoping that they follow up on the Russ plot from Vengeful Spirit and have a Russ v Horus duel.

I for one really hope they do not.

Primarch battles should be kept away from the Horus Heresy now, they just seem to be chucked in to say "OH LOOK, TWO PRIMARCHS FIGGGTINNGGGG, I WONDER WHO WILL WIN?" We all know how it ends.

Now if it was an encounter like Curze and Sanguinius above , where it seems to be more of a non duel, or even somewhat like Mortarion and Jaghati to a lesser extent, I don't mind. But fighting Primarchs fighting because fight, really drives me away from books and makes me skip pages. That and, a Russ vs Horus duel would further show Russ as the Incompetent lapdog that can't really do anything right or anything he says he will do.

But Russ is supposed to survive the Heresy, so this can't happen.

Russ' reaction to what Horus had become (at this point, a god) would be worth the price of admission

That depends on the author in question. I feel like there is a lot of potential. Each to their own; gratuitous Primarch battles can be entertaining, just look at Lorgar/Guilliman/Angron in Betrayer - one of the best written duels in the entire series, with arguably the best monologue to boot.

When I say Primarch duel, it doesn't mean I want them to stand there hitting each other just to say who can win. That isn't the point. The conversations between two Primarchs in the heat of battle can often shed better light on their personalities and give previously unseen insights into their character than any other parts of your typical 30k novel. The fact that Russ acknowledges that he isn't even sure if he can beat Horus makes for a fascinating confrontation, especially with the changes Horus has undergone post-Molech.

Anyway this is heading off topic. Back to Pharos

I honestly don't know how to feel about

Sanguinius sparing him...

On one hand, it makes him seem merciful. On the other hand it takes away from his pissed off avenging angel feeling that he had regarding people fighting the Emperor AND BETRAYING THEIR BROTHERS! By this point he was supposed to be full of RAGE.
