The Watcher - CZ Dunn

Kriegsmacht

Recommended Posts

I just bought and listened to this audiobook. I also purchased Garro - Shield of Lies and will listen to it soon. Was wondering if anyone else listened to this and what they thought. Spoilers ahead.

Even though I knew what was coming when the Wolf Pack was leaving their shuttle I was still wincing at what was about to come considering the legion they were sent to observe.

Also I figure the legion Ison came from was the Night Lords since all that was mentioned throughout was "his legion."

Kind of sucks that the word that was cut into the wolfs flesh wasn't mentioned but it seemed to have an affect on Ison. Am I right in that? I went back to listen again and it wasn't mentioned at all. Will it come up again later?

I guess that's why the Garro series is the only part of the Heresy I purchase because this was about Ison as a sort of proto-inquisitor(at least that's how it came across to me) which I found interesting. Hope to see more audiobooks like this with the Knights Errant.

Anyways that's my ramblings.

Sorry never really talked about a story like this.

Ison is a Knight Errant Librarian who is led to a shuttle that arrived with one occupant. A horribly mutilated but barely alive Space Wolf with pictographs and words carved into him. He recognizes the them and through his Psychic powers we flashback to the Wolf Packs arrival at Curzes flagship with orders to become the Primarchs observers. They leave the shuttle with no weapons(except for one wolf who disobeys) and greet the Primarch flanked by hundreds of Night Lords.

After Theodore is given the silent treatment during his announcement Curze finally lets out a laugh and the wolves are attacked by all the NLs being stabbed repeatedly, punched and kicked to death etc. Before the main wolf(Theodore Strongrim) could be killed Curze speaks saying that he has a use for him. He picks up the Wolf and with a knife he carves a word into him for Malcador and the Emperor to see.

Ison sees the word and knows who it is from and it's meaning. while a servent of mars named Samual who escaped from there tells him he has a spare sarcophagus to interr the wolf in Ison tells him to get the Apothecaries instead to save the wolfs life. As he carries the wolf he says that he does have a use but not the way Curze intended.

Also that word Curze carved isn't mentioned and it's realized but not outright said that Ison used to be from the Night Lords legion:

He carefully lifts what is left of Theodore from the crate, cradles him in his arms. The grey of his Knights-Errant armour stains red. It is pleasing to Ison. It reminds him that he no longer wears the colours of the legion he has abandoned,  nor follows a primarch who he detests to his very bones.

I struggle with audio books. Not because they are hard to access or the lack of medium to play them on, I think I've got so used to reading books and having to fully visualise the situation or I'd prefer visual to go with my audio. But this has got my kind of brutal written all over it. After the spoilers I may just have to take the plunge proper

I never read Deathfire so i'm not sure who you're talking about Augustus.

@HelterSkelter

The audio is over 19 minutes long. The flashback starts about halfway into the story and ends 2 minutes before the end.

The attack on the wolves is brief and brutal but considering it's the Night Lords doing it I wasn't surprised how fast it was.

Also Curze has a wicked laugh and when he speaks his voice sounds cool especially when he says "This one still has a use". :)

I listened to this audiobook a while ago and couldn't remember much of the little details, but a few weeks ago I listened to it again after reading a post which was called something like 'loyalist astartes that hates their primarch'. Someone in the discussion referenced Ison in this story as a Blood Angel. I therefore listened to the story a couple of times to try and get where this idea had come from and couldn't quite find it. A few google searches later and I was none the wiser.

However, Kriegsmacht, the quote you give in the 2nd spoiler seems to be where this idea comes from. I can see where you come from but I can also see the reference to the red meaning legion colours, which would indicate Blood Angels or Thousand Sons.

True I immediately jumped to

Night Lords

because I was thinking of the blood smear on his armour. Wouldn't surprise me if I'm wrong as I haven't read a lot of the Heresy books. I'm unfamiliar if any marines from those two legions hated their Primarchs.

Also I think Curze is the type of Primarch that can make someone detest to their very bones. lol I can't really see Sanguinius creating that kind of reaction from one of his

This flashback takes place just before Istvaan. The Night Lords were on their way there when the wolf pack intercepted them. Even though the Night Lords have a horrible reputation the wolves didn't have any reason to believe that there would be any hostility so he made the call to leave the weapons behind. Theodore didn't want to antagonize the Night Lords any further. After repeated calls to land with no authorization even though the hanger doors opened he decided to land without that authorization.
