duz_
My first army when I started 40k back in 3rd ed 15yra ago was Mordians. I loved the atheistic and idea of a no nonsense fighting force who fought in full dress uniform despite the horrors of the grimdark future. Before I stopped playing I managed to accumulate a few squads and some praetorians for my ccs. Since starting back after that 15yr break I still have my 3rd ed painted minis and managed to pick up another 40 odd mordians. Although I considered keeping my original minis for sentimental reasons I want to play with them more and their bright 3rd ed colour schemes look a bit out of place (plus I like to think my painting skills have improved ) so I decided in the [dettol] drink they go. Some sat in the drink for a couple of months before I entered a 750pt tournament which was an excellent excuse for me start this project even though ill only be using maybe half of them. After having a quick squiz through the wip section I noticed a complete lack of guard topics so I decided to post it here too. I decided to paint up a full squad with GL LC converted vox caster and sgt first to set the colour scheme. Post dettol bath pose Everyone in their new black base coat These guys ended up taking a lot longer than I expected. After batch painting so many cadians I thought I'd knock one squad out in a couple of hours. Turns out these guys have more details than the current cadian kits. So I took some wip photos as I went to keep myself motivated and posed them in front of a taroux prime that had been painted up for my scions but I am re-purposing as taroux for this up coming tournament. Fortunately theccolour scheme does compliment my mordians somewhat. (Although my other vendetta and wyvren will be the odd ones out this time around with my regular red and white scheme). duz_
So after what ended up being a full weekend (and some!) I finally finished my first 13 guardsmen. My original models had bare hands and one of my first vox caster models I had done last yr also had bare hands too. However after learning a few tricks with painting white (including how ulthuan grey can look white from a distance with decent washing and shading) I thought the idea of white gloves would fit the motif of full dress uniform as my mordians rushed to their certain death. After spending so much time on that first squad I decided I would break from it by doing my company commander and lascannon teams as they too a fair amout of time. I wont be using the commander in the tournament but it gave me a chance to play with schemes for the praetorian commander ill be using as a lord commissar at the tournament. Unfortunately one of the 2nd hand lascannon teams I bought was missing its plating. I was considering knocking something up for it but in the end decided to leave it as it painted up oright and I'd probably make a mess of an attempt. Having completed them I decided next was the special weapon teams. The tournament is at the end of January and I am not sure if ill finish it all in time so I will prioritise the special models first. That way if I have to do the 3 colour minimum on the regular guardsmen it should be pretty straight forward. I also converted one of the flamers into a heavy flamer with one of the cadian flamer tanks and some green stuff. That's about all I could get done before the holidays set in and we went interstate so no hobby for me over the break. Happy snap of the guys I've put paint on so far. duz_
Look fab - and echo Grotsmasha's comment, the gloves are awesome - mind sharing the wealth and letting us know how you did them? :)Thanks! Its pretty simple I developed it when I was doing my scions Its based off the games workshop how to paint MT Scions tutorials just using different colours I also used tips from my local GW with how ulthuan grey is a lot easier to paint with than whites. TL;DR Once base coated I painted a layer of ulthuan grey and then evenly coat it in nulin oil. Once dry I go over the raised areas in ulthuan grey again leaving the recesses shaded with the previous nulin oil. Even if there is pure white colours nearby it looks white. (More cream white than bleached white) Its really simple and ulthuan grey is a lot easier to work with than ceramic white and white scar. Hope that helps! As you can see I've used it for my scions fatigues and still looks good over larger areas. (Sorry I don't have any better quality photos of my scions on my phone) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317558-mordian-painting-project/#findComment-4261904 Share on other sites
Kriegsmacht
Very nice work. I like seeing the old metal miniatures kicking around painted up. I found Ulthuan grey to be a godsend. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317558-mordian-painting-project/#findComment-4261917 Share on other sites

our_baz
Those white gloves are a nice touch, I have a real soft spot for those classic models. You've achieved a great finish on them, in the classic blue, great work! Might want to show your fine work on the AM sub forum too, we are very friendly bunch and catch some more passing traffic. Doghouse
Fantastic stuff, probably my favourite guard regiment too. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317558-mordian-painting-project/#findComment-4261959 Share on other sites
BrotherAtrox
So good to see some Mordians out there. What was the regiment that wore Pith helmets? duz_
Thanks for the feedback! When I started I hadn't really planned on making a thread of it all. So will try and step up the photo quality in future posts! BrotherAtrox that is the Praetorians. They're almost identical to the mordians bar the helmet. Ill be using one of them as my Lord Commissar (need to fish him out of the dettol bath when I get home from holidays). I also have a standard bearer and trumpeter Praetorians. Not sure what I will end up doing with them. They seem like good candidates for MoO OoF conversions. duz_
So holidays continue and we still have guest in so hobby time is limited. However I have made a point of trying to get some hobby done. I have more reinforcements have arrived (ie I pulled out some more minis that had been soaking in dettol). So now they've been stripped I've been filling in the slotted bases with GS to fill in the gaps. Its long and tedious but I figure given the effort I'm putting into repainting these I might as well. Its also good practice for my GS skills. This is who I plan on using as my lord commissar an old praetorian lieutenant. I'm looking forward to painting him. He will be fairly distinct from the other mordians provides the colour scheme I have in mind works. Kriegsmacht
Seeing these Mordians makes me miss the non-cadian troops. I know they still have metal squads for sale but would be nice if Gw gives them a little attention. Chaeron
Thanks again for the painting white tip duz_ - glad you got those models ready for painting, looking forward to those in time! Have you decided on any particular armoured accompaniment yet? duz_
You're welcome! Well these guys are just a small faction of my 3000-4000pts of guard. For the tournament I'm just taking a wyvren and 2 taroux because of the restrictions. I have been considering doing up a specific armour colour scheme for my mordians because of how well their new paint is coming along. Maybe a chimera or taroux or two. Currently my armour is a completely different scheme to both guard regiments I run (cadians and mordians). To give you an idea: At some time I might develop the fluff more but right now the general basis is that they're a combined armoured and infantry force of various regiments that had sustained considerable losses so as not to be effective enough on their own and stationed too far away to be reinforced from their home worlds so they've been thrown together to continue the fight. duz_
Its somewhat UN inspired Best part about it is that I can hammer out a whole LRBT variant in a couple of hrs Only problem is I find the GW red can bleed a bit so the trick is not getting smudges of red on the nice white chassis Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317558-mordian-painting-project/#findComment-4268843 Share on other sites
duz_
So I have finished painting my Mordian contingent that I will be taking to the tournament in 2 weeks time. All I have left to do now is some basing.I had a practice game the other week and as I was rearranging my carry case I found an old commander I hadn't stripped yet.So I thought it was a good chance for a before and after photo. What a difference 16 years makes....FootsloggersSpecial WeaponsI grabbed a flamer tank of one of the Cadian spures and a little bit of green stuff to make this "heavy flamer" Mordian.Heavy weapon teamsNCO'sOfficers Platoon Commander Company Commander / Commissar Lord CommissarMordian CompanyFull Allied Detachment for the Tournament Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317558-mordian-painting-project/#findComment-4282297 Share on other sites
duz_
Basing done!So now my small 750pt force for the tournament is done.I still have about another 30-40 odd Mordians left to paint which I will attempt to finish after I take a quick break from painting. I also included my Psyker which I had forgotten to include in my last group picture. I had painted this guy earlier, but only based him with the rest of my force for this tournament. duz_
Thanks Basing is something I honestly prefer not to do So when I do look for something that wont look outta place on most tables and is simple enough to do I'm fairly happy with how it turned out in the end Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317558-mordian-painting-project/#findComment-4284109 Share on other sites
