Iron Hands and Imperial Fists

Hi all.

Instead of trying to choose between the Xth and VIIth for my Betrayal at Calth army, I've decided that I'm just going to break down and paint both.

This means that I would like to run a 'strike force' of both Imperial Fists and Iron Hands - the catch being that it needs to be some time AFTER Ferrus has died (so my IH can be a bit more ragged/morbid/emo).

Is there any fluffy way of justifying these two appendage-named armies working together? Or will I have to completely make something up and hope no fluff lawyers berate me?

If I do have to make something up, I'd appreciate some ideas to steal.

Just throw some weathering onto your models to make them look like poorly re supplied Istvaan survivors.

Or you could have them as an IH detachment who linked up with an IF detachment returning to Terra. You could them use the rationale that the IF re supplied the IH if you don't want to do weathering or battle damage.

There is no real attributed fluff with the IF and IH,  there was the book Riven, however that was one IF templar and a group of Iron Hands.

The good news is, you can do almost anything with an Iron Hands/Imperial Fists force fluff wise, short of the Avernii in large numbers, who were more or less wiped from the face of the Imperium. The Iron Hands were spread out somewhat with a very large amount of them still alive after the ambush and events in the Orbit of Isstvan, so there is plenty of fluff to attribute to an Iron Hands force.

As an example you could have a [insert clan here] company flee from Isstvan, get caught out in a loyalist run system, and meet up with some Imperial Fists who are garrisoned there, when all of a sudden, all the lights go out due to the whole warp storm debacle.

That shattered legions book is going to be amazing for people like me who just want to paint ALL the legions. Especially seeing as it will make it possible to have the rag-tag groups of different legions working together to do badass feats like in the HH novels.

Also, how hot is the idea of Chymeriae. Monsters/mass-produced legionaries with no idea of who they are acting as space pirates? That's my kind of edgy.

Since you've all been so helpful, here are the base colours I hope to use for both forces.
