Death Watch - Need some assistance

Doghouse

Recommended Posts

Ok so I desperately want a playable 40k army and this is not easy to talk about this but I have OCD which has turned this hobby into a bit of a torment for me. As some of you may have noticed over the last few years I've gone from doing units to struggling with a single miniature due to anxiety attacks and just general frustration. But I don't want this to beat me so have come up with a plan to try and see if I can do this.

What I would like is some help with coming up with ideas for individual marines for two ten man Death Watch units, which along with the Captain I am making using the Cantor rules will form the very basic requirement for a gaming force. This can be any chapter including DIY ones of your own creation and all I need is a short description saying their name, chapter and any particular traits or bits you would like see added to the model. Try and keep it brief but describe what you would like to see, I'll be using the stern guard rules for them so pick a bolter and another weapon as a secondary option from the stern guard entry in the codex. So basically make a marine using the unit listing in the codex.

Thanks in advance

My only suggestion would be to make the sergeants of the 2 squads from close quarters focused chapters (since the sgt has access to power weapons etc). So a space wolf with power axe and a black Templar with power sword would be fluff appropriate imo. Keeping standard bolter and bolt pistol on both since you already will have sunk an extra 15 points into reach model with the respective power weapons.

Hi Doghouse,

I have always looked out for your stuff on the B&C and have really loved what you have produced over the years.

My request would be for a Dark Angel along the lines of the great mini you did based upon the old chaos warrior, striding forward, remorseless and unmerciful, with a medieval/early mark helm/armour to represent the First Legion, from which he descends.

For armoument I would go with a bolter, but with a plasma pistol somewhere on the model allowing for an option to run as a 'counts as' combi-plasma. As a story note he could carry the pistol to silence any heretics with a headshot, with the power of a sun!

For a name I suggest Nathanael, which is according the internet is an angel who rules over secret things, fire and vengeance - very Dark Angels if you ask me :-)

The presence of a Dark Angel can add mystery to your fource regarding his motives and also provide a counterpoint to and Space Wolf you may have (they could each have an honour marking saying they took part in the famous duel and you could keep tab if their notable kills on the battlefield to see who is 'winning' the rivalry between them).

On a personnel note I wish you success with this project, I have some family experience with OCD and so know a little of how hard it can make seemingly ordinary things in life become. You should be proud of your determination to continue your hobby and enjoy the modeling, painting and gaming experience.

Hope you find my ideas useful.

I feel like a lot of questionable and/or plain renegade [not traitorous!] chapters can make for very interesting individual characters. A Knight of Blood clashing with Codex-compliant Marines, while even the sons of Sanguinius hesitate to defend them. A Lamenter who believes his chapter has been destroyed. A Minotaur who refuses to talk about the secretive, and brutal nature of their chapter.

The Deathwatch novel was pretty good in my mind, you could always use that as reference!

Brother Coronas Barrazi of the Mentor Legion. Combi-Melta.

I'll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with! You always seem to have a new spin to put on 40k models that makes them just plain interesting.

Fantastic stuff, exactly what I was after thank you all very much. :tu:

This really has helped, I've got most of the Captain done and am ploughing on with the first two.

Paladin7221: Ah the Mentors, I remember doing those way back in the day so that might be fun to do. Thanks mate, you should like what I have done with the Space Wolf I am working on hopefully.

Deathspectersgt7: Ok mate no problem at all. I'll do some reading up on them as I only know a bit about those guys. I seem to recall them being albinos, might have to go for a helmet-less head if that is the case.

EllieBenelli: Many, many moons ago back in the days of Rogue Trader I did make a lone Lamenter that had survived the Tyranid attack so might have the perfect starting point. The idea that he believes he is the sole survivor might make for an interesting idea.

Knight of the First Legion: Nice one, used to be a die hard Dark Angels and Space Wolves player back in the day so this really appeals to me. I know exactly what model you mean.

Canadian_F_H: Ok what I will do then is make the sergeant a Space Wolf to counter KotFL's Dark Angel.

So to start things off looks like we have the following for the first squad.

Mentor with combi-bolter/melta

Death Spectre with combi-bolter/melta

Lamenter

Dark Angel

Space Wolf sergeant with bolter and power axe.

Wall-Brother Kariba, Excoriators (2nd Founding Imperial Fists)

Armed with a Tigrus Pattern bolter with a stock. Bolt Pistol, combat gladius, and a Escharan broadsword as befitting his feudal homeworld.

Helmetless, he has a mowhawk of ragged hair, the sides of his head are shaved, and he has a thick beard the colour of dark mud.

His eyes have ritual black grease around them, almost like face paint, a custom taken on by his chapter since their time defending Terra, famously being given only one order by Lord Dorn himself at their wall: 'Do Not Lose'.

His warplate is a mashed together mess of Mark iii, Mark iv and mark vii.

His chapter symbol is the red fist of the emperor on a bone field, holding a yellow lightning bolt. A small string of bones and scrimshaw fetishes hangs off his pauldron, consisting of bones from squadmates he has served with, who have died in service to the Emperor.

As per his Chapter's customs, Kariba refuses to repair the surface damage of his warplate, leaving each scar to crag the surface, and personally engraving a notation around each scar, telling where and when he received it.

It is a map he is proud to wear.

Brother Corran Klytus, Astral Claws.

Brother Klytus is, technically, one of the oldest living marines today not interred in a dreadnought given that he was originally of the Tiger Claws chapter that was lost in the warp for fourteen centuries. With the mysterious disappearance of their new Chapter Master and later induction into the Astral Claws, Klytus became increasingly discontent with what was happening to the remnants of his former Chapter. Almost immediately, he raised the ire of Lugft Huron, being very vocal with his dissatisfaction, and was subsequently sent off to the Deathwatch by Huron to remove that thorn from his side. Only later would that decision have haunting implications to Klytus.

After Huron's perfidy was brought to light, Klytus - who was already an exemplary Sergeant - dedicated himself to proving even further that he was not of the same stock as Huron and his consipirators.

If you choose to use him as a Sgt, he's armed with twin lightning claws. If not, a combi-melta. Given the age of his wargear, he wears a combination of Mk III and IV, lovingly maintained and cared for.

Brother Crypt, Angels Sanguine

Armed with combi-bolter/flamer, combat gladius.

As with every member of his chapter, the Astartes known only as 'Crypt' never goes without his helm in the presence of his Deathwatch battle-brothers. Uniquely, he refuses to speak, instead preferring to communicate in the battlesign language common to the Space Marine Chapters.

His armour is mainly comprised of the common Mark VII 'Aquila'-class, though with reinforced elements reminiscent of the rare Mark III 'Iron'-pattern. On his right shoulder he bears the bat-winged skull emblem of his Chapter, painted upon a strip of tattered yellow cloth. This is believed to be the last remnants of the Shroud of Lemartes, an honour particular to his Chapter that represents the fact that a particular battle-brother has overcome the Black Rage, the gene-seed curse that plagues all the Chapters descended from the primarch Sanguinius.

Many times, when his Deathwatch Killteam withdraws from a combat zone, such as a Space Hulk or other Zone Mortalis, Brother Crypt is the last to fall back, utilizing the flamer component of his weaponry to clear the area behind them. He does this, as he always does, in silence.

Crypt, his Deathwatch brothers say, is not Astartes. He is not true Astartes, they claim, for it is written that when the Emperor created their kind, he spake six words, saying: 'And they shall know no fear.' This is not true for Crypt, his brothers say, for Crypt knows fear all too well, and truly, he knows how to instill it in the hearts of the Xeno all too well.

Well, that's my bit. Hope it inspires you, Doghouse.

What about praetors of orphans. Standard death watch marine but due to their nature as a chapter he could have more ornate/reinforced armour. I'm personally a fan of reinforced hornets and armoured loin cloths,I have no idea what that section of armour would be called but it'd be similar to some of the iron armour and iron hand models where you get the flap that hangs down from the belt. Give him a fancy bolter, preferably drum mag, and some bionic a and you're good to go

+edit + meant praetors of orpheus not orphans. New phone and the auto correct is bloody infuriating on it...

I present Brother Sheal of the Carcharadons

Brother Sheal is an exemplar of his chapter Withdrawn, taciturn and speaking only in high gothic, when he does chose to speak it often surprises his watch brothers as he offers rare insight as little escapes his slow patient gaze. In combat he again follows true to his chapters record, switching seamlessly from bolter bursts to extreme violence and has one more than one occasion torn xeno forms apart with his bare hands, but this is not the berserk rage of a Flesh Tearer as sheal is fully tactically aware and will switch back to bolter at the exactly right moment. Sheal has also shown an aptitude fore stealth approaching undetected to rend and tear.

sheals gear consists of a well maintained MkV Battle Plate with extensive stealth modification. he carries a holy bolter with chainblade bayonet, twin chaindaggers and a boltpistol with an extended capacity mag.

unhelmed Sheal has skin the colour of old ash with liquid black eyes a tribal tattoo extends over his left eye and across his bald head.

hope this is what you are looking for

Cheers

He Is a Heavy Flamer specialist. His flamer is a bit customized with a few blades to give the burning enemies their killing blow. On his backpack is a big combat knife attached.

Wears Mk8 armor with lots of honormarks and purityseals. Right shoulderpad is Mk3.

He believes in the cleansing power of fire^^

Nice one cheers guys, this is working really well I've got the Space Wolf built along with two others and the Captain and I am currently working on the Death Spectre and the Dark Angel. I've taken a bit of a gamble with the Space Wolf, personally I really like it but we'll see how it goes.

As soon as my camera is charged I'll post some pictures.

MikhalLeNoir: Very nice idea, might have to add some slightly scorched purity seals I think that would compliment your idea.

Grandmaster damion: That's spot on mate.

stinkenheim: Thought that was predictive text so now worries there mate. I think the Mk III breacher helmet might work well with your idea.

The Psycho: Very nice mate.

Brother Captain Kage: I might go full lightening claws and make him the second sergeant actually.

Hellchyld: I have just the axe in my bits box...

Candleshoes: Very nice, lots of detail and sounds like a challenge to make which I am up for.

Legio Draconis: No problem, lots of gore too I presume?

So that gives me thirteen, just another seven to go.

OOH this is AWESOME!

If i may, i have a humble and selfish request for an addition.

Khrem Feljagd, of the Tundaran Knights 7th Great Branch

One of several astartes turned over to the inquisition when the individual rights of the Tundaran Knights chapter were revoked years prior to their hasty and mostly unjustified designation as renegades, Khrem Feljagd was assigned to serve under the deathwatch under continued observation by an inquisitor for the purpose of a member of the chapters' dealings with their cousins over extended campaigns, to which he has remained unwillingly after his chapter was wiped from all imperial records.

Khrem speaks almost exclusively in the Tundaran dialect, (drawn heavily from Czechoslovakian IRL) and switches to high gothic only when necessary, the astartes also possesses the pseudo-psychic capabilities of the chapter, and can summon an ethereal combat familiar in the shape of a snake to act as an extra set of eyes and ears, making him an excellent tracker. He keeps his distance from others, mostly to deal with the personal pain of losing his brothers to the hands of the very organization with which he now fights for.

He is armored in a great variation of warplate including a MKIV helm, MKII and MKV pauldrons, and MKIII legs (of which one was replaced with a mechanical facsimile after loss of the limb to a pari of tyranid lictors.) His weapons include a crude shortsword worn across the back under the power plant, several grenades around the left hip, and an umbra-ferrox boltgun.

His armor is also decorated in bones and skulls hung around his armor, a tradition and necessity in the chapter to help reduce the psychic backlash garnered after significant kills.

the chapter symbol:

gallery_77140_10004_8717.png

the pauldron color for the 7th great branch is light-gray, with several small warding runes painted around the chapter symbol, also in blood red

Fell free to discard the idea if you'd like, but i'd be honored if you added him to your force of badasses! biggrin.png

It would be remiss of me not to see the XIX represented.

Brother Torvan Vel of the Raven Guard.

Prior to his secondment to the Deathwatch, Vel had been acting as a training Sergeant amongst the 10th Company.  Now he provides his unit with his considerable abilities in reconnaissance, stealth-craft and marksmanship.

Plain MK VI armour.  Standard bolter but make it look like a Stalker if you can.

Are you going with an Unbound force? And for the two squads, are they going to be Tactical Squads or Sternguard? It's great to have all of these suggestions but keep in mind that basic Tactical Marines have boltguns and bolt pistols, which are what you need if you don't want an Unbound army.

For greater clarity and as a way to organise yourself, perhaps you could do a list like Augustus did for his Imperial Fists? Write down exactly what you plan doing and your basic idea for each model and then let people fill the gaps :)

Anyway, on a more positive note I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this progresses!

Brother Azim Basheer of the Iron Lions (Dark Angels successor DIY) - combi-plas bolter with a sling, Spectris Bolt Pistol with an extended magazine, and a wicked combat knife sheathed horizontally across the small of his back, to allow easy access in CQB.

Azim really enjoys getting rapid-fire close, dumping as much ammo as he can, and closing to melee as quickly as possible - which is why he needs the sling. If, after the initial volley, there are enemies within charging range... he's not going to wait and reload. He'll let the weapon fall to his side and charge in to finish the job with his knife. At this point, the pistol comes into play before the final All Clear is called and he reloads his primary.

Azim spent much of his formative centuries of service as an assault marine, before deciding to be seconded to a tactical squad, so as not to overspecialize in any one form of combat. As such, he's just as happy knee deep in corpses as he is shooting from a distance - a balance he works very hard to maintain, as he feels it gives him an edge... and makes him a greater asset to his squad.

It should be noted that Azim has only once driven a tank - a desperate fight wherein he took the wheel after the driver was killed in a hail of incoming fire - and heroically piloted it directly into an industrial column, disabling it for the duration of the assault. His squadmates have never let him live this down, and his secret shame is harbored very deep. Suffice it to say, he has not shared this with anyone on the Kill Team he's been assigned to - but suffice it to say, if asked to pilot a Rhino, he'll just say "No." (Dark Angels and their secrets, right?)

Cheers guys, every little bit helps. These are really shaping up nicely now and I think might be some of the most enjoyable models I've made in years.

I've got the Captain, Space Wolf and Death Spectre nearly completely sculpted/built, the Dark Angel is about 80% done as is the Astral Claw heavy flamer guy.

zxyogi: Do you have a chapter icon for that one, not sure I know those.

argent aquila: No problem, sounds very penitent.

Asamodai; No problem mate, I was originally toying around with a raven guard before I decided to get people to help out with this so this will be fine.

Dosjetka: I've had to change my plans a little after taking a second look at the current version of Cantor in more detail, seems that Stern Guard are counted as scoring units and not as troops. This is pretty easy to rectify, I'll just knock together some tacticals to accompany them after I get these guys done.

Griz: Bright pink Crimson Fist marine it is then mate...I'll try and make something with lots of armour marks thrown in along the lines of your guys mate. ;)

Legio Draconis: Sounds good mate.

Lemainus: No problem. I think I already have a pose in mind for this guy.

I'll try and get the first pictures up this weekend, really want to plough on with the first guys for now before doing any reveals.
