Getting large magnets to stick to resin/plastic

Begun a series of Knight builds.  Have been building up a plastic Knight first and am magnetizing all the weapon options (right arm guns swappable as well as making the Avenger cannon mountable on both right and left arms).

 

To get maximum hold, I was using 3/8" x 1/16" magnets, which are approximately the same diameter and depth as the lower flange on the Knight's upper arm joint (where the lower arm attachments interface with the upper arm/shoulder).

 

So because there was no room to drill, I sawed off the flange and left a tiny bit of the original diameter (approx. 3/8") to give maximum bearing surface for my magnet.  I scored the plastic surface and even roughed up the magnet with coarse sandpaper for maximum adhesion.  Superglued and clamped overnight.  Magnet popped off instantly as soon as I tried to mate its opposite pole.

 

How to proceed?  What can I do to get these buggers to stick?

 

My thoughts are, in order of least effort/hassle:

 

1. use JB Weld or similar two-part adhesive, but I fear that the bearing surface will still not give adequate hold

 

2. Get plastic tubing with an inner diameter around the magnet's diameter and rebuild the flange I cut off so I have a surface I can set the magnet inside of for maximum gluing surface.

 

3. Grumble and buy new upper arm joints from a bits seller to replace the ones I cocked up and go with a smaller diameter, weaker, magnet.

 

Ideas?

I'm going with an all of the above solution.  I cut further into the part, stuffed the hole with green stuff for maximum surface area and am going to use JB Weld.  I may even drill some holes into the GS filler so the JB Weld can have even more surface area.

 

GS has cured over night, but I'll need to was it when I get home and clean off the vaseline I used in the process.

 

Hopefully all of this will give sufficient hold on the magnets, because the arms options will be heavier than normal.
