Artefacts Quick Read

I will be the first to admit, Nick Kyme's writing is rough for me. Whether it is the seemingly contrived infighting that dominated most of the Salamanders 40k stories, or the out of nowhere 30k Vulcan plot, I just don't get his writing. We already know Vulcan survives the Heresy, can't we just find something cool for him to do? I think the problem most of the time is admittedly, I have no clue what is going on in the Vulcan 30k storyline, it makes no sense to me.

All that being said against my better judgment I got the quick read, Artefacts, tonight. And, it turned out to be the best quick read/short story I've read so far. Easily the best portrayal of Vulcan so far. I really enjoyed Vulcan's discussion of his role within the primarchs, but for me the interaction between Vulcan and Horus was amazing. It is so easy to think of Vulcan as a simpleton given he occupies a unique warm and fuzzy idealistic spot, but it is clear that so much more is going on beneath the surface. Absolutely excellent writing. I hope that the next (and final I think) novel about Vulcan shows more of that character development.

The only thing I remember is one scene from the first Salamanders book. It featured the chaplain bashing opponents with his crozium while yelling god-emperor-related soundbites at them. That quite amused me. It was very Charlton Heston in The Greatest Story Ever Told.
