Sniper Veterans?

I am looking to get into 30k but I am unsure about my troops choice.

I only want to make 1 purchase so looking for some advice,

Right now i am thinking of sniper veterans as troops using Pride of the Legion.

2 units of 10 guys with 2 heavy bolters in rhinos

But are they worth it over regular marines?

For 5 more points I could get 3 units of 10 basic marines in rhinos.

Thoughts?

Flamers are an option now as well, and sniper flamers are magnificent (wounds on a 4+ and rending? Why yes.). Consider leaving them in cover for much of the game or running rhinos so they have some survivability. Also ask what the difference in job between the squads. Vets get better shooting and get ccw's for free (but at the formentioned added starting cost).

Vets are also much more flexible than Tacs and they pay for that Flexibility.

Dont pigeonhole yourself into one specific Tac Vet Build. Magnetize a Few bodies/Arms and you can run:

  • Sniper Bolters: can threaten anything that isnt a GMC or Vehicle and are much better at tackling MC's (the kind the Admech have) than Normal Tacs.
  • Sniper Heavy Flamers: Wounds on a minimum of a 4+ but vs lower toughness, getting 2-3+ to wound is much easier due to the higher Strength. Couple that with Salamanders for +1S or Death Guard for Shred or ZM for both in either case and they just melt stuff.
  • Tank Busters: 10 Tank Hunter Melta Bombs with the option for up to 2 Tank Hunting Melta Guns and possibly a Tank Hunting Combi-Melta if you wanted to.
  • CC Monsters. I'd use them as 3+ Hunters moreso than 2+ hunters in this. But with either Fearless or Furious Charge, coupled with a few legion rules and you can get some pretty nasty punch.
  • Late Game Objective Cappers. With Outflank and a Rhino (and missiles for opportunity rear/side armor shots) you can have a sleeper hit unit that catch your opponent off guard.

All these and more, you just need to think about it.

Conversely, what can Tac squads do?

  • Shoot Bolters.
  • Capture Objectives.

They had Heavy Flamers before. Not entirely sure why Flamers are any better short of you are really desperate for those 20pts?

The lads (ladies?) above have it covered, although I would personally always consider use of a Rhino. Even if you end up leaving them in terrain, they are forgettable or wastes of fire (especially when not using them as a transport), can tank shock/ram, deny objectives, and block line lf sight while being immune to normal bolters, which is rather good for 35ish points. Not to mention that they can be used to transport other units like Breachers who don't normally gain access to rhinos (although they must embark turn 1), and with Ultramarines can be used to cheaply trigger the shooting bonuses to wound.
