Project: Genesis - Month 1

This thread is to document my attempt to create a 1'500 point army from Codex: Space Marines representing part of the Genesis Chapter's 5th Company. I shall do this by painting 250 points per month for the next six month. I will have less time this month but will do my best to still finish off the 250 points by the end of January. Month 1 units are detailed below.

+++ Project Genesis - Month 1 (250pts) +++

++ Space Marines: Codex (2015) (Combined Arms Detachment) (250pts) ++

+ (No Category) +

Chapter Tactics * [ultramarines]

+ Troops (250pts) +

Tactical Squad (120pts) [Flamer, Rhino, 4x Space Marines]
··Space Marine Sergeant [bolt Pistol, Combi-flamer]

Tactical Squad (130pts) [Plasma Gun, Rhino, 4x Space Marines]
··Space Marine Sergeant [bolt Pistol, Combi-plasma]

Created with BattleScribe

The current state of the first squad (flamers) can be seen below.

Brother Serik (left) is only missing a proper base and a painted boltgun, Brothers Talgat and Timur are basecoated and washed, and Brothers Erasyl and Nurzhan are untouched. The aim is to have these five models and their Rhino completely finished by Friday which means that there will most probably be daily progress updates.

Thank you for looking. smile.png

I like it. You've got a plan and a theme. I'll be rooting for you Dos! smile.png

Thanks Prot! :)

I like that shade of red. was it hard to get right?

White undercoat, Mephiston Red basecoat (a couple of thin layers), brown wash in the recesses, clean-up with MR, first edge highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet, final edge highlight with Troll Slayer Orange. So no, not too difficult. :)

I'd be a happy man if I painted that cleanly. As it is, drybrush, drybrush, weather, transfers, more weathering, cake with mud, job's a good'un guv...

What are you taking as your inspiration for the Genesis Chapter, fluffwise? I always think of their engagement with the Night Lords in the titular trilogy.

Good luck on your project

Thank you!

I can thank a borderline obsession with how 'Eavy Metal painted their models about two years into the hobby for that. The downside is that using techniques that deviate from that "formula" feel almost unnatural. So painting like you do is (at the moment) quite inaccessible to me. ;)

Fluff-wise, I haven't thought too hard about it. Til now, I've just settled that the first Tactical Squad will have Kazakh names, while the second one will probably have Armenian ones. I know that the Chapter is almost identical to the Ultramarines in its military doctrines and organisation, but that doesn't mean to say that they have to be identical in their culture and other areas. So, for the moment fluff isn't my main focus but I do still have a few ideas and concepts I'd like to explore later on down the line.

250 points a month is an excellent idea. I might steal that, if you don't mind?

However, you picked Genesis Chapter. Not bad, but you could have gone with Sons of Orar. Missed opportunity!

I pinched from someone else, who most probably pinched it from someone else, etc. So yes, feel free to do so. msn-wink.gif And seeing as there's more Sons of Orar armies on the Web than Genesis ones, I went with this Chapter.

Right. I've been painting for most of the evening and have managed to finish off all of the non-metallic parts on both of the previously partially-painted models.

The aim now is to finish painting all of the silver and gold parts, as well as paint on the Chapter symbol by tomorrow evening. If I have the time, I'll also paint the three missing boltguns but that's not a priority right now.

That's good reasoning. I do just love those red and white colour schemes though.

Really like the Ravenguard helmets on those Marines, especially combined with the MkIV legs.

That's another reason why I didn't choose the Sons of Orar: I can't paint white msn-wink.gif

The MK VI helmet on Brother Timur is one of my favourites.

Anyway, progress report! I had a rough day and so didn't feel like painting for fear that I mess something up. Instead, I worked on the five Astartes from squad two.

All of these have been recycled from other projects so it was a quick job but I'm glad it's almost done. Truth be told, I could finish these off tonight but my motivation is quite low so I'll call it a day, get a good night's sleep and finish them tomorrow.

Anyway, if all goes well, the weather should clear up enough on Wednesday for me to spray the undercoat on some more models.

So, today's progress.

gallery_45765_11545_903.png

As I mentioned in my last post, all of these models have been recycled from previous projects that didn't work out. And one of them is more than half painted which might count as cheating a bit. Honestly though, anything that allows me to meet my monthly goal of 250 points of painted models is fine in my books (as long as I don't get the painted by someone else tongue.png).

Their poses aren't perhaps as exciting or narrative-rich as the ones from 1st Tactical but I'm still rather happy with them and the mix of bits helps making them a bit more interesting to look at.

I'm hoping that the weather clears up tomorrow so I can undercoat them. If not, I'll have to find another solution which would be a bit of a bummer. Anyway, I've still got two models to finish off and three boltguns to paint, so that should keep me busy until the end of the week.

That squads looks like they've been fighting on a space hulk (some of the ships are heresy era) for a long time, that's why all mixing and matching.

I have similar weather problems currentl, except I can only paint when it has rained.

These are really good, I like the red recipe you have. I hope you don't mind, but you've gotten me inspired to paint up a few of my marines as Genesis Chapter when I get round to redoing my blue horde.

Thanks, Saul! And no, I don't mind in the slightest! Make sure you share them once you get started. smile.png

Could be, though I honestly just enjoy mixing armour marks up. biggrin.png

Luckily, I got all of the models undercoated along with a Rhino, so I'll be able to progress and not worry about the weather until I get the second Rhino built.
