Daemon2027
Right here goes. I find it almost impossible to stick to one thing, I'm less a hobby butterfly more a hobby gnat. I once started painting a model as an Alpha Legionnaire and after a day of solid positing he had become a Raven Gaurd via a Son of Horus. I've brought so much on a whim from Forge World, and sold it on eBay barley a month later. I can't tell you why this is, I personally hate it, it makes me anxious that I can't pick and stick to one thing, which is really just silly. Recently I've been trying to build and paint what I have, and have been enjoying getting models (mostly) finished. The other day I came across one of my more random projects, an Emperors Children Legion Phoenix Guard Terminator. Ive never been a fan of the Chaos warband versions of the Emperos Children, but I've grown to love the Great Crusades, early Heresy era Legion. The bold purple, white, gold and silver. And the models are just gorgeous. Some of my favourite models on this forum are Emperors Children. So I has to have a go. I really enjoyed painting the model, but I got to the last little bits, tidying up, little details, reworking some parts I didn't like, and I couldn't be bothered, the model got out to one side, then placed at the back of the shelf, then into a box and then into another box. When I found him his spear had snapped in 3 places, he had lost his pointing finger, the paint had been chipped in places. A sad end. But, then I found a handful of parts of the kit. One complete set of legs, and a few cup up legs, a few spears, and other such bits (no idea where the rest of it went). So I decided that even if it's just this one model, I'm going to get him finished. I got working, it couldn't just be a normal terminator of course, it decided to build a truescale palatine blade, a suitable torso and head was found, by the end of the night I had well this: As you can still still work in progress. I'm not sold on the current spear position, I'm think it will be more dynamic held in two hands diagonally across the body. There is also the question of If I should try to wysiwyg the model, adding grenades, side and ammo pouches, would this bulk up the model to much? And then there is the base. I'm getting bored of my usual cork =ruins approach. I really do plan to finish and paint this model, and to keep this updated with my progress. I'm trying not to think to far past him at the moment, but man I am loving the IIIrd legion right now! Feedback, comments, encouragement, all appreciated. Tyrannicide
As a person who "suffers" from the same problem as you, my advice is to allow yourself to get comfortable creating one-off showcase pieces, a single squad, or even small thematic strike forces. Similar to the approach that the gents from Iron Sleet (check it out if you've never seen it), go about the hobby. I think the incessant, self-imposed limitation to stick to only one Legion is too restrictive for a creative talent like yourself. It does more harm than good. Believe me, I understand the frustration of not being able to look over 2,000+ pts of the same Legion, being able to sit back and take in that achievement. You're a skilled dude and literally every project you've started inspires me to get off my own ass and moving on my workbench. Have you ever considered doing a Victory is Vengeance strike force? 500 playable pts max is achieveable, even for people like us. :p Let me ask you this, are you more of a background-oriented hobbyist? Daemon2027
Thanks for your responses guys. Tyrannicide, first off thank you for all the praise. I would certinally say I'm more a background orientated hobbyist, it's just I do have that itch to have the 2000 plus army, but I need to face it, I signed up for this site over 3 years ago and have never even got close to that, perhaps I should just try to focus on something smaller, see where it takes me. I'm a big fan of the Iron Sleet guys, especially Migsula, his Alpha Legion are simply amazing, and I'm really enjoying his work with PDH and John Blan....I mean Thistle Ok so no stressing let's keep building this Palatine Blade. I'm going to try the alternative spear arrangement and see what you guys think. SkimaskMohawk
It's looking amazing so far and all of your pieces have been inspiring to me; it was your thread that made me make an account in the first place Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318145-a-paragon-of-war/#findComment-4275665 Share on other sites
Sete
Ah dude I have the same problem. I love Templars and despite that I rarely do them because I can't do them justice. Then I try to do endless DiY chapters. Then I hop around factions. And in the end I have very little to show off. I hate it. Daemon2027
Thank you SkimaskMohawk, I glad you did make an account here, your Night Lords are beautiful (well for a bunch of fear obsessed murderers). Sete, let's see how this works for me, trying something that isn't high on my love list. The mental image is a lot more broad. For example, every time I have tried to make and paint the Alpha Legion I am never satisfied, because it's impossible to create what I have in my head. Not there is nothing wrong with the models, or the painting but to me it's just not right, so I will never stick to it. I'm hoping (theorising) that it will be different with this Emperors Child(ren, what is the singular here?). Update of an evening work. I've changed the pose, not entirely sold but put the work in so its staying. Head is absent as is getting some work done. Backpack is hopefully in the post. I'm slightly worried that I shouldn't have used the terminator hands, they look a little massive, but again, not going to be changed now. I'm quite happy that despite a few parts I dislike I'm not tearing my hair out and dropping him in the bits box to be recycled. Daemon2027
Had a busy weekend so not much progress, but we have a head! So I decided he wasn't big enough, and decided to cut up the really pretty bits. So far I've just tried to make the are smooth, but as you can see there is an area which isn't all that smooth, and I'll sort that out tomorrow. Once I've got that sorted I'll re add the fine detail. I've also started to build up the feet slightly with the aim to give a little more hight. I did a little test run, he's about a head and a bit taller then my inquisitorial soldier so hes a little short but reasonable, if I make another ill do all this before I add the torso. I'm fairly happy with the pose, Im thinking of adding a ribbon just below the blade to try and add a bit more movement. I also want a bit more detail to the belt are, looks a bit plain. Daemon2027
Slowly getting there. The legs a a little scruffy but I'll be able to smooth them out once I've basecoated. I'm not sure what to do with the power pack, I'm thinking of adding a speaker for some sonic fun. Whatever I do I think that's the last detail I need to do. For the loyalty and treachery event I pledged a 6 man palatine blade squad, a legion champ and a Contemptor. The idea is to build 12 models (6 being the sacred number of Slaneesh, 12 being 2 6's and apparently 12 has 6 divisors, whatever that means. Maths isn't a strong area of mine) for an elite war band, I'm building the fluff slowly, but the first 8 are the above. The last 4 will be slightly more random, currently thinking 1 will have a Volkite weapon and one a Sonic Shrieker. The other two may just be vets so I have a couple of bolters. I'm also tempted to do a special 13th model, Fulgrim (pre demon obvs). Still working out the details though. chaplain mortis
All looking great mate! Still having trouble sticking eh? Its a nitemare.....there should be a health warning attached to the Heresy lol.... Half the problem is that they are producing so much cool stuff for each legion...the other problem is having so mamy ideas with what you could do with each legion... Try and stick at this mate... :-) ...I think you could do great with the emperors children.. And if all else fails...give it a few months and I will have an almost painted army to trade as I will have changed legions aswell hahah Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318145-a-paragon-of-war/#findComment-4282018 Share on other sites
Daemon2027
Yeah I think it's he idea of doing an army, I just get to ahead of myself and lose interest. The plan is to make this band of Emperors Children, and I'm working on an Imperial First because I have an interesting idea of painting yellow. If that works out I might look to them as a project post the EC. I've also got my Inquisitor group to finish, lots of Mechanicum models in progress, and a Tau commando team which has staled. Oh and I decided to rebase a Goblin model I did on to a circular base which is more hassle then I thought. Daemon2027
Thanks Kizz. Right almost done. The speakers are a little rough and need a little tidying up before undercoat but I think you get what I'm going for. A little size comparison.
