Scale or size scenery/walls for 40k?

Hi everyone, just posting to check on something, i wanted to make up some scenic bases, and thought about going to the local hobby store and getting some model train scenery or WWII models with scenery and whatnot, but after a little reading have seen that there's a fairly big variance in sized across all the different hobbies, and didn't want to go and buy (or order on ebay), and get say a wall i was planning to put up to use as basing materials, and have it look enormous (or tiny) in comparison to the rest of the 40k models (Blood Angels/Astra Militarum/CSM/Daemons etc.).

What is the size or scale of 40k in general to look for? I've seen suggestions like to look for 35mm, or 1/42, I'll admit I'm fairly ignorant on all other hobbies and even about scale and whatnot, so was wondering if there was a general consensus for what to use/look for, or if anyone had any guide or suggestions?

I basically was thinking of getting some reasonably cheap brick/concrete walls, or cheap model housing, and butting them up for battlefield debris and walls for the Guard to hide behind.

Thanks.

28mm is generally appropriate although you do get some variation depending on style. 35mm is usually a big too chunky looking for 40k, especially if you're going for basing materials. What makes things weird is that 40k tanks and infantry arent scaled to one another, so 28mm looks about right on infantry, but if you sit down and look at a 28mm scale wall next to a rhino then it also looks a bit off. I stick with 28mm whenever I buy non-gw stuff. I think consistency is important if possible.
