Hesh Kadesh
Depends on hull points/void shields. If you want to run a Deathstar, you currently have one or two options, and they are both pods. The Kharybdis is used if you can't fit the squad in the Dreadclaw, basically. They allow a second turn charge, and rather well, because it is resilient. The Spartan is resilient in terms of pure HP and AV but 5HP's (compared to a Kharybdis's 5 with a 4+, effectively 10HP's in an overly simplistic way of looking at it) can near enough guarantee the unit gets there; even if it is destroyed, because Deep Strike and Flyer with Flat out means it can deploy out of sight/arc of Deredeos or Kheres Mortis, before flatouting into deployment range next turn, where the 6"+6" deploy and move followed by a 2d6" assault should catch most things running away. A spartan is easy to counter. Deploy first, set up avenues of likely approach with killalleys set ready to recieve a likely advance thanks to a choice target for a deathstar at the end. Going second, place your Grav in the best line of sight to first turn gib. Or just infiltrate, and win it that way. This relies on you taking Graviton though, and while some choose not to, in a competitive and especially tournament setting, you cannot afford to have a big galumphing unit stuck 3" outside of its own deployment zone taking a half dozen dangerous terrain tests, and in difficult terrain. Back when everyone had Cataphractii (might see a change to Tartaros now) they were double screwed as they couldn't run, and few people had the points for a replacement vehicle. Hence, Land Raider Phobos have been taking precedence in general lists, with less powerful units (mainly because people didn't need Ferrus and 10 Gorgonators joined by a FL). Not only are they cheaper, monetarily and points wise, but that they can soak up 2 Grav units firepower for much less points. Alternatively, running WE, spamming 20 Man Tacs with Spartans. And that is mostly because there are too many HP to deal woth (although I try to build my lists around being able to deal 10 HP first turn; 6 Grav Cannons, 2 Podded Legion dreads with Dual Grav and a Chainfist, and 3 Medusa; mainly to kill Knight lists; which should kill 2 spartans dead turn one, leaving 2 units stuck nowhwere and the third isolated and facing a refused flank), or Covenant of Fire Salamanders where they are curiously ran nude, because 5+ Invuln vs Melta and Move Through Cover, and there arent many things out that that deals with AV14 in 40k anyway, let alone AV15, short of grav or ordnance barrage which both bypass a Flare Shield. Making it cheaper for no loss, but still capable of placing 20 Wounds of WS5 Terminators in enemy lines. The Mastodon, if it brings 9 HPs and a Void Shield soaks up the firepower (even my list may struggle to make a dent) acts like a bunker (so no medusa/typhoning the terrain locked nublets afterwords), amd spills off an 18" S8 AP1 or better afterwords. And even then, it may have a reinforced front like a Gorgon without the weakness of the Open Topped not actually letting them not assault. CommodusXIII
I don't see this having any larger impact on the face of the meta than the Ordinatus Ulator. A cool toy, but not something that you'll find parked in every garage.
