Super glue issue

Firenze

Recommended Posts

So, while building a warhound titan, I have accidently put the hip section on in reverse, so the groin plate will be out the rear when attached. The model is only superglued, so no super duper jb weld to break. I did test fit and everything just when it came to the gluing picked it up wrong without realising.

Any tips on how to get super glue debonded? It's in the ball joints I need more to unglue.

Stick the part in question in the freezer (preferably a deep freezer) for a while - time will vary based on how cold it is; at least 24 hours I'd say. Cold temperatures tend to make the super glue brittle, making it easier to 'snap' the pieces apart. Just be very careful - just because it weakens the super glue doesn't mean it makes the parts any stronger.

In the electronics field (some background in),  I've used "Freeze-It" spray.  It's an aresol can of fluid that when emitted from the can is a stream of super cold.  It'll put the cold right where you want it - right on the joint.   If you freeze the whole model you may make the whole model brittle thus when you twist off the part, could take some plastic with it.

The other direction is to go to use a solvent.  The solvent that will defeat SuperGlue is acetone.  But, acetone is "hot" in terms of action (flashes quickly), much faster than mineral spirits.  A Q-tip of acetone on the joint may weaken it enough to peel it off.  Any deformation to the plastic (in either case - cold or solvent) can be green-stuff repaired.

Wash (soap/water) after to get any residue of solvent off later, I suppose.   Test on some old plastic Sprue material (Glue it, and then Acetone via Q-tip to see the effect on the plastic)

Good luck.

On a ball joint on a resin model your best option is going to cut the limb away from the glued ball, flip the limb around and then drill and pin the limb back in place. On other joints, freezing and then working a modelling knife into the crack usually works

Damn I was hoping it wouldnt come to that... Worst come to worst I can use my scratch building skills (what little I have) to custom make a mount for the groin plate and such... it should be ok..
