Secret weapon washes shiny?

Hey folks,

Silly question for everyone. Every time I use my secret weapon mini wash it comes out wicked shiny. I shake it/water down and even mix it with nuln oil(which seems to be the only thing that works) and it still has a sheen. Help!?!? I seek the wisdom of the sage council of the B&C painters!!!

You might take a look at this. I remember reading a few criticisms of the washes a few years back. I don't really see an answer though.

Ohh!!! Super helpful

Slips&Bryan- I should have been clearer. I do use the varnish with a matte finish but it doesn't quite do it for me

Matte varnish is actually just gloss varnish with matting agent powder in it. You can try adding some matting agent to the wash, or thinning it with brush-on matte varnish and some acrylic medium to see if that works.

The simpler method would simply be to add yet another coat of matte varnish to see if that doesn't help bring down the shine. Sometimes one coat isn't enough for very high sheen finishes, just like one coat of white isn't enough to cover black primer.

I'll echo Bryan's advice. Whenever I run into issues with shiny washes - Nuln Oil can do this too if not properly shaken - a coat of Lahman Medium usually takes care of it. Sometimes I have to use multiple coats, as the wet medium can blend in with the shiny wash and hide areas that haven't been covered.
