Rotor Cannons

This isn't meant to bash Rotor Cannons. I love their idea, I just wish their implementation was better.

That said, how is this for an equivalency?

That is what S3, Salvo 3/4 looks like, and makes you seriusly consider how strong that Bolters are, and by dint, Heavy Bolters. Holy moly...

Probably not the best comparision seeing as how "Autoguns" and "Autopistols" are (at least in my head) equivalent to modern day rifles, which would mean that the rotor cannon is just a M16 firing at double speed. The linked video (murdering a light vehicle) looks more like the Avenger Gatling Cannon found on a Imperial Knight.

Well, double speed doesn't really cut things equivalently; a Single shot missile launcher is Heavy 1, while a Heavy Bolter at heavy 3 isn't firing once every 2 seconds.

And what you are saying is true, though. If an autogun is Strength 3 firing 7.62mm ammunition like an ak47, then an M134 minigun is also 7.62. While it has some differences in stopping power etc, something akin to the Punisher Cannon, Assault Cannon or Bolt Cannon is more like an GAU-8 30mm rotary gun.

I believe there was a WD article years ago which gave stats for unarmoured vehicles which had them at AV9. There isn't much scope in 30k or 40k to have civi vehicles.

Also, when you think that the next step uo from a S3 weapons is to go from a solid slug 7.62 round to a 20mm explosive shell, it kind of shows IMHO XD.

This is what a avenger sounds like in my head

Yeah it's the BRRRRRRRT! gun. But technically that thing shoots depleted uranium shells that eat T-90 tanks while the Avenger cannon is more like a 40mm Bofours cannon on steroids (explosive shells, not dense penetrators).

You're forgetting the AP5 instead of AP - also.

Considering a frag grenade is S3 AP6, the +1 S and AP of the bolter represents the grenade having an armour piercing tip and detonating inside the target.

Rotor cannons are one of those things I'm just not sure what the design team were thinking. There is just no practical application for them. The only one I can half think of is Militia ones that are S4 in Zone Mortalis for rending.

Yeah, if they just gave them Rending in Cold Void missions it would make them nearer worth their +5pt it costs for them, because Reaction Firing a Salvo 4 Rending Weapon up against a 3-4d3 instand hit Rending Shreds is roughly equal. They don't NEED s4, just then ability to Rend in the circumstances.
